Every bass player AND drummer should watch and study this video. Less is always more! Uneducated musicians think reggae is boring, but 90 percent of drummers out there can't hold down a one drop beat, and then the bass players over-play...and everything falls apart! Awesome video!
Big thanks to all you bass players around the world. At this point in time this video has reached over 200,000 people in one year. We are thrilled that people are finding us. Big thanks to the man himself, Devon Bradshaw. Reading these comments below we see that he is really inspiring people on many levels. We are so grateful for sharing your thoughts.
Devon, thank you so much. I was a self taught bass player, played in a few bands in Belgrade, Serbia but I havent found anyone interested for reggae so I quit in 2011. Didnt played my bass even for myself. I found yor videos where you played bass lines and patterns which motivated me to play again. Please continue with playing and teaching with your friend on drums, who is also great and I like to jam with his riddim. If you go to Serbia, do not hesitate to contact me... Take care S.
Devon and Louie,, a big Hello from the Bay Area, Oakland California. Thank you both for this happy, beautiful musical lesson. Peace to you both and a long, healthy life**
Keep going girl, make sure you warm Up at least 5 mins and warm down! I have played for a long time and my thumb is stressed from not doing this regularly. Enjoy your journey, I would strongly encourage you to sign up to 'Scott's Bass Lessons' ASAP to build in your knowledge base! What music do you Enjoy? I play, Reggae, blues, funk and Afrikan rhythms. ❤❤❤
What makes the learning process so fun is that you and the drummer are both genuinely having fun as well. It helps to have someone who's having fun to make the learning process more enjoyable. Thanks for the great video!
Turns out the best Reggae drum lesson on youtube is a bass lesson. How about a few words from the drummer? Great stuff, thank you so much for sharing the vibrations...
Really man....what a groove!....amazing bass n drums...when it flows in the blood and comes from within, it shows😊...original is always original....thanks so much for sharing❤
I’ve been struggling with making bass lines. Today I watched this video and 10 minutes later I made the best reggae beat I’ve ever made. Thanks for this video!
Devon, thanks so much for sharing your expert advice. Please continue your Reggae Bass tips. Your an awesome teacher. I pick up so much from your examples. Viewing your outstanding technique and nuances that words can't say, only to be seen, heard and understood. Please continue the series....
one of my favorite YT videos of all time. It makes me smile, gives me good vibes all around and educates me all at the same time. Can't thank you guys enough for recording this.
I love how everything has a logical, technical explanation, but Devon emphasizes the feel, the vibe. All music is supposed to be about that, but reggae is just a direct connection there 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
After playing bass for almost 20 years i find myself about to join a reggae band. I have always admired reggae bass players and thought it to be deceivingly complex style of bass. such a different feel from most western music. Thanks for the tips, this is just what i was looking for.
I gotta say that when he started talking about space between the notes and then schooled me on it right there, I knew I was watching a true master. Much love and respect.
Very cool lesson, very clear and instructive. A good example of the need for a strong bass+drums relationship to build feel good music. Many thanks to both of you !
yes, I agree with another commenter... was just listening to favourite jazz drummer, then found this bass lesson for fun, and now just discovered another great drummer! blown away by the drum feel and musical approach, really serving the song. love this bass too! Thanks ya'll from melbourne.
Ya man, love it! I mean, if I'm ever in a bad mood before I pick up the bass I just put this on. Soon I'll be laughing along with these two great musicians! Positive vibrations! Peace!
I keep re-watching this. Every time I do, it makes me aware that I play too many notes. The good reggae players just know how to choose the important ones and omit the rest. I'll keep practicing.
This is a perfect UA-cam video. Mega talented & humble musicians. Great instruction. 3 points explained perfectly. Not too long, not too short. Just awesome. Thank you!!
Thanks Mr. Bradshaw for your Reggae Bass Tips. I have played bass for years, but never Reggae. Our band is learning a Reggae song to mix things up and not have our band be typecast. You have helped immensely.
Thank you so much for this funny musical moment !!!!! Devon, your bass lines are present for ever in my heart, thank you for your musical legacy, One love, One heart, this is music !..... You made my life so sweet when I listen your music..... I hope the best for you ......Bye
Some great tips, thank you very much! I never use my thumb when playing bass but you are right, it works very well with these kinds of bass lines. I'll definitively start using it in my playing.
At the moment I am sitting in Germany and its winter... I see you and your friend play and need to smile too. You got the Reggae, you feel it and I can feel this happy mood. Great work you two! One Love
You can actually apply what he said in this vid to all different kinds of music. The most affective bass lines are the one with space in them. It's not how many notes you play, but what notes you play and how you play them! Great stuff, drummer is great too!
I watched this video when it came out, and I’m still watching it now, Devon has been a big inspiration in my playing, it’s one of the best reggae bass videos out there, when is number 3 coming, thanks guys ☝️
Greetings Devon. Ron from Majestics here. Long time! Sending the vibes and remembering happy times on the road with the Spear. Hope to cross paths again one day. Respect.
Good video, thanks. I'd always liked reggae, but actually trying to play the instruments myself makes me realise just how good you need to be to do reggae. Reggae musicians don't get enough respect.
This is by far the best reggae bass lesson I've seen on youtube yet! Worlda respect! I would've liked if you mentioned that the bass pretty much defines reggae music. Classic foundation bass riddims rule the dancehall still, over 50 years after those riddims were first created and recorded, which just shows how powerful and ingenious those deceptively simple basslines (and of course the bass players who came up with them) really are.
Great music tutorial! Only well seasoned musicians know that you have to let the music breath. It's important that you don't over play. You have to do what's required. The less you put in the groove the better. When adlibbing, you don't have to prove to others that you can play for you're only entertaining yourself only. Space, silence and gaps is music also and not just the notes or beats. This goes for any instrument. Everyone be careful out there..
Thank you very much for sharing your wisdom! It's amazing how much reggae bass lines depend on playing the right note in the right time; one note too much or too little can make all the difference! It really has to be felt intuitively and needs a good reggae ear .
Yeah I dig this video, I play drums and percussion, just started to work with a roots reggae band and I’m also learning bass. This is so helpful! Thank you so much!!!
Devon, man you have rhythm I love learning these bass ryhthm lines they are so musical with the spacing you talk about just love it, thanks for the lesson.
I grew up listening to reggae but i'm just now beginning to actually play it! And I have got to say that I'm having so much fun learning! The strumming, the chords, the rhythm, the feel, you name it! Definitely going to stay in touch with your channel for lessons! Much love!
So much more raw and such than the usual stuff I lisiten to like Fleetwood Mac (even their early blues stuff) Billy Joel and stuff like that, which I've been playing to. I've been playing instruments for many years and bass from about 20 to now 26, but I only just recently figured out that basslines, the actual note timing doesn't always go right with the drum / other drum kit parts on the money, there's this variation unique to every song.. and didn't figure this out until I slowed tracks down to really listen. This is really cool, thank you for sharing.
Devon your music really makes me happy I love the intro song I would love to be up there playing bass I love reggae it's my favourite to play to I've just taken up bass, loving every minute of it thanks for the inspiration 👍
Awesome video glad I stumbled upon it. I have watched Burning Spear live in Paris over a thousand times and always wondered who was backing him. Good to know your still around playing beautifully THANKS!!

What's that Bob Marley song where he sings "on fire now" ...and not sure the rest. It has a nice bass guitar set though.
What was the song at 2:01

Jah bless you for the amazing souls jumping right out of my screen
Only time a lesson sticks is when it's fun.
And it's a fun one to watch for sure, learned a lot!
Every bass player AND drummer should watch and study this video. Less is always more! Uneducated musicians think reggae is boring, but 90 percent of drummers out there can't hold down a one drop beat, and then the bass players over-play...and everything falls apart! Awesome video!
Very observant and practical
Same with the guitar my friend, plenty good players cannot keep it off beat.
Factts
so minimal that he just uses da low b as a tumb rest...ya man..
As soon as you overplay when you're supposed to be playing a rest, it's not reggae anymore.
Big thanks to all you bass players around the world. At this point in time this video has reached over 200,000 people in one year. We are thrilled that people are finding us. ReggaeintheRuff big up for the tutorial
This drummer is one of the best I've seen. He looks at his instrument, the bassist, while playing the fill, like a true altruist.
Every time I watch this, it makes me smile. The good vibes, the interplay between the two gentlemen, the inventiveness, and the great grooves.
Devon and Louie,, a big Hello from the Bay Area, Oakland California. Thank you both for this happy, beautiful musical lesson. Peace to you both and a long, healthy life**
I’m getting a bass for my birthday and this was the least stressful, most encouraging bass line tutorial I’ve found. Thank you. 🧡
It’s a great instrument to play, good luck ☝️
How was this not stressful and encouraging? This video made me hang up my bass lol
Keep going girl, make sure you warm Up at least 5 mins and warm down! I have played for a long time and my thumb is stressed from not doing this regularly. This man's spirit shines through his words and music. The grooves are deep... feel it in your bones. A lesson for all of us bass players!
What makes the learning process so fun is that you and the drummer are both genuinely having fun as well. It helps to have someone who's having fun to make the learning process more enjoyable. Thanks for the great video!

I will never again NOT call my thumb my 'big finger.' Forever grateful for this video and the love pouring through it, respect!
I could listen to these two jamming all day. Perfect grooves...
I could just sit and listen to the pair of you for hours. Very groovy and melodic.
After playing bass for almost 20 years i find myself about to join a reggae band. I have always admired reggae bass players and thought it to be deceivingly complex style of bass. such a different feel from most western music. Thanks for the tips, this is just what i was looking for.
