  • This is my first youtube video! I thought I'd start by sharing some information on modifying my Peavey Wolfgang Special which has been great fun for rock/metal but limited for anything else. This mod adds a coil split switch to the front of the guitar which - in my opinion - makes it more more usable.
I used the wiring diagram shown in the link below to figure out the connections. I hope this helps someone in deciding whether to modify their Wolfgang (or similar) and also in technically how to do it.
The short clip at the end shows the Wolfgang being played on a solo -with my 6 year old on percussion duty lol!
    Enjoy!

I can totally relate to the Strat single-coil vs Humbucker clean tone thing....but I've never liked the thin sound of splitting humbuckers until I bought my first PRS...they don't split the HB 100% (partial coil split)...they put a resistor (ca. 2K-10K etc.) between the splittet coil and the ground which results in a thicker more natural sc tone...easy mod, big effect...the higher the resistor the more of the splittet coil comes through

Hi Steve. Got my neck coil tapped. Sounds great. Got it done by guitaraid in Putney. I am not affiliated with them but they do brilliant work at a great price. Recommended to me by andertons guitars

Bryan - great to hear. Gives the guitar a lot more flexibility- enjoy!

It does indeed. Did you ever get the bridge pickup tapped? Wondering if worth doing. The neck tapped gives a very close approximation of a single coil, due to its fairly high output I guess.

Bryan Darragh Hi, yes. The mod I did taps both pickups so effectively turns it into a bridge single and neck single. The only issue I have now is the distance between the mini toggle (by the volume) and the main pickup selector - it makes changing from neck full to bridge single (for example) a two step process, but nothing too bad I guess.

Good luck, its pretty straightforward. Worst part was chiseling out inside the cavity to make it thin enough to mount the switch. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Jeremy, did you split your standard pickups. I have a wolfgang standard as was not sure if the same pickups as this video. How does the split sound on the standrd? I have heard many different things. Any info most welcome. Regards Bryan

Hi very interesting sound.i'll do the same. Some people says yhis peavey pickups are dimarzio. The neck pu is very unconventionnal . What do you think?

jakoo972 Hi, thanks for watching. I found the pickups great for distortion and overdrive sounds but definitely didn’t like them clean. It really made a difference and I now use the Peavey a lot more live. There are so many variants of pickups out there it’s difficult to pinpoint what they might be. As long as you have the 4 connecting wires on the pickup it should be the same process. Take a look at the diagram in the description. Cheers!

Hi there, I dont suppose you know if the pickups in my wolfgang standard are the same? I am having trouble finding out. I love your split coil sound, but wonder if the same. Any info most welcome. Regards Bryan

bpdarragh Hi Bryan if you are referring to the 1996-2004 Wolfgang’s, I believe all models had the same model pickups in them (US and Korean). I’m not sure what newer models are fitted with. I suspect any of the pickups will have a similar transformation once they are split. It definitely makes the guitar a lot more usable all round. Hope that helps. Steve
