I currently have the S1H with a standard zoom lens, but I'm in a position where I can afford to upgrade to the Ronin-4D alongside these VDSLR MK2 lenses. I'm curious, as you also had the S1H, do you still think the Ronin 4D is still worth investing in. I specialise in more narrative and commercial projects, so for me, my interest is in the unique shots and innovation/technology behind the camera, regardless of your crew size. But I'm surprised that not many content creators are talking about it
Thank you so much! Appreciate you watching it. The Ronin 4D is definitely a unique set up, however, having used it for the past year and a half I really am in love with it. Now it supports Panasonic lenses via the interchangeable mount, I can use the same autofocus lenses on both the Panasonic and DJI cameras, which means that I only really need three or four lenses in my kit bag for what I do. I wonder if there will be a second version of this camera available at some point in the future-who knows. For me, the benefits outweigh the negatives, especially having just one battery for the entire system, built-in ND filters and stabilisation.
Great video and really want to try these lenses! For the weight issue I just put on a lightweight monopod. It weighs very little but allows me to set the camera down ( keeping hands on of course) to take some of the weight off between takes. Also attached a quick release if I want to remove the monopod quickly.

Would love to see a video about calibrating manual lens for autofocus on the 4D. I don't feel like there's much out there on it from people who really use the system on shoots. Curious if you feel that the system works fairly consistently across all the manual lenses you've tried? Thanks for the great content.
If you're struggling with the weight You should try the smallrig dual camera strap, You just attach the straps to the handles and It Will help to carry the weight with the whole body. It helped me shoot a whole day and don't feel it on My back and arms the next day.
Great to hear about your experience with the 4D brother, I've been watching all videos there are on youtube on this camera I think and I am still thinking because it is such a big investment! But wow, your footage looks incredible... I have one question, if I may: I heard some people say, that the customisation options with the gimbal are not that great. Is it possible to change the gimbal speed, smoothness and deadband to a point where it slowly stops instead of being pretty fast? Most of the footage, that I have seen is quite rapid. Much love!
What impacts the weight the most is what is being attached to the camera module because of the fulcrum lever principle. The longer the distance an object is from your hand position, the heavier it will feel. So if you kept the lens weight down, removed the included counter weight, use an active lens to avoid mounting the focus motor and removed the lidar (so manual focus only), then the 4D will feel feather light.
Thanks! I since switched over to L-Mount primes from LUMIX once the L-Mount was released for the 4D; eliminated the need for the counterweight and they're also much lighter.

For the weight problem, tDJI now have the extension kit for about $1000 so operators are now putting the bulk of the camera in a backpack and just holding the gimbal, sensor and lens.
Forgive me if you mentioned it in the video...about to run out on a shoot myself, but how many ssds and batteries do you usually carry for a full day shoot?
Sorry for the late reply, I would go through 3/4 batteries in a day; I have 3 and always keep one on charge and rotate them. For a wedding shooting in H264, anything from 120-200GB footage by the end.
Yea I had to use an EF > E Mount adapter, I found a cheap one on Amazon for £30 but unfortunately I can’t remember the name - there’s no brand name on it more of just a black dummy ring mount.

Thanks!! So yes even with my other gimbal and original lenses I’d still need to rebalance a little just due to varying weight and sizes, same as they are now. Just don’t need to adjust the position of the follow focus as that’s always the same with the consistent gears so that’s one thing!

Hi! It’s a VideoMicro - not amazing but good for ambient audio and most importantly for me, it’s tiny and requires no power 🙌 a slight upgrade from the internal microphone basically

Hi! From memory at the time I was using the EF lenses and then the E-Mount on Ronin 4D. Just using a cheap URTH EF>E adapter. Now I still use EF lenses sometimes but I use the L Mount Ronin 4D-8K; using again just a cheap EF > L Mount adapter for EF lenses and the focus motor.
Just got my Ronin 4D with e mount adaptor. Already have a set of sony primes... 20, 35, 85mm. Do cine lenses really give that much of a different look and are they worth the investment? Another question, the Rode videomic mounted to the side. Doesnt it pickup the gimball sounds? As I read alot of comments that you have to mount your mic at a standoff from the gimball. thx

Hi! Thank you so much for your comment, I think it's to do with the calibration of the lenses. You might need to try again, it takes about 10 minutes per lens. I normally calibrate the infinity distance just as far as I can see in the distance, for example on some far away housing or something, and then do the closer distances in a large room, focusing on the same item over and over and making sure that it is sharp with the speaking. It's quite a tedious process but once you've done it once, it should be okay from there.
I thought I read that there was a recent firmware update....that made it so you did not have to calibrate new lens..that the camera would do that automatically now.
Hi! I’m not sure if you need the counterweight with the 14mm since I have it attached permanently but if I were to guess, you wouldn’t need it as it’s the smallest and lightest (from memory). There’s no iris control as they’re all manual, and you will therefore need the focus motor too to operate it.

I found the best way to focus was by keeping the lens at T1.5, ND64, and pointing it out the window with the LiDAR covered to set infinity. Then using a magazine or something to to the close focus, 30cm, 50cm, 1m, 2m, 2.5m and so on.
I really hope someone can help me with the noise in the footage issue and especially shooting progress. LT I did so much banding in the sky and artifacts I literally almost feel like I made cost of a $10,000 mistake even though when using optimal lighting, the footage is amazing but when using natural why I’m getting crappy footage
Hi, are you using E-Mount? Others have mocked me in the Facebook group for suggesting this but after switching to L-Mount there’s zero noise for me now. Not sure if there’s some kind of digital interference going on or something but L-Mount fixed it!
Russel, I love your content mate. Your videos have inspired so many shooters! In all honesty, when I compare your Ronin footage to your previous S1h footage , the footage from the S1h looks better! I can’t quite describe it - but it definitely looks better!

Because I noticed with MK2 group there wasnt a 14mm but was available with the VDSLR II CINE group. Also the VDSLR II CINE lens were cheaper. Will they both work for the 4d?
Thanks for the info! Both will work on the 4D with the focus motor and the counterweight; I think MK2 is the all-black versions I'm using now, VDSLR II (or Mk1) are the one with the red ring design which are very very similar just less weather resistant (they're the original versions).

Thanks!! Ahh there’s certainly a trick to it - although now I’m using the LUMIX L Mount lenses which means they’re electronic focus with the lidar.

I see so many times halation on your sample footages. Why don't you use a matte box?
On a gimbal it’s a bit overkill especially when needing to change lenses quickly; and I don’t mind a bit of imperfection:)

Hi! Oh, I am not sure - I do know there’s a MK1 and MK2 of the VDSLRs and they’re both quite similar :)

Is it an AF lens or cine lens…? I found the AF lenses didn’t work for me on the Ronin 4D yet.

Samyang 35mm T1.5 VDSLR MK2 will fit and perform well in stability for Ronin 4D? How about Lens weight issue?
Lens weight is OK but needs the counterweight; I used the EF > E Mount and you’ll also need the focus motor of course :)

I figured it out! I rewatched your video and saw that you mentioned.... manually calibrating the lens. I was using auto calibration.
