He's not a member of the cult, he's just a jerk!
    Love that.

Thanks for the video! I LOVE NAGAS! Still, for a first to third level module, that is quite a challenge!

Tony - this is a personal favorite and I just mentioned it in a live stream that was covering another classic 1e module L3 the Deep Dwarven Delve. Ironic that you posted this video today and called out that you had the dungeon in N1 be a Dwarven Delve. Both feature Nagas.
I played this one in ‘87 then ran it in ‘89. I haven’t run it since because I’m still playing with the same group since ‘89. We’re in our 35th year of playing together.

Fyi the notch is a good indicator that your body got it at a used book store. I remember that being a thing back in the day at a local used shop here in the south.

My favorite module of all time. I always go back to this one. Doug Niles is a brilliant designer, also a really good author of many of my favorite fantasy novels. A must have!

We played through this using OSRIC. We have been playing through the old TSR modules. We started with Hommlet and then went to Orlane because of questioning some of the Moathouse opponents. They revealed some connections to the cult in Orlane. So we went to investigate. So much good fun.

Loved this adventure. I think this is the published module I ran the most times for different groups. It always went over well. :-) Great fun.

One of my favorite go-to moves is to use ATCoTRG has a recruiting detachment for the Water Temple of The Temple of Elemental Evil. Just add Water Symbol pendants and a few letters.

Such a great module!!!! Perfect start for the world of Greyhawk. Deadly 1st level adventure. Kinda the 1st level version of Tomb of the Lizard King. Thanks for posting Tony, love your module reviews. Still waiting for your top ten 😁

I just made the same comparison last night on a live stream. Mark Acres Tomb of the Lizard King is pound for pound thee most difficult 1e module in my opinion.

This is a great adventure. Niles doesn't get enough credit for his adventures including B5 Horror on the Hill, CM1 Test of the Warlords, and H1 Bloodstone Pass.

great one... and one of the most interesting and fun of the classic modules at least till the very end and the boss encounter as many reviewers have noted needs a NPC ringer to help survive but the meat of the module and oppo's for role playing as you investigate the village was great.

This is my all-time favorite module. Orlane is on par with Hommlet as one of the best starting towns in old school D&D. The only issue that ticked me off is the title, which is a dead giveaway. They should have called it “Terror by Night”. I am seriously considering writing a screenplay based on this module. On a side note, this can also be set in the Conan world, as a Hyborean age spinoff that could fit in with the Thulsa Doom snake cult plotline. Definitely Douglas Niles at his finest.

This was the second adventure I went through with my first DM, and the first official adventure that we played. I still have the map from his adventure that we did. Those are my best role-playing memories.

I usually had characters start at 5001 xp , to lessen the difficulty of the module!

I've played this one a couple times and Dmed it twice. We had a lot of success with this one. Good Times and Always managed to figure out the mystery which certainly wasn't the case with , for example, the assassin's knot.
If I use this one I generally have run people through another easier first level module first.

This looks amazing! From the comments it was really popular back in the day. I can't believe I never read it.
I don't recall any EGG declarations, Tony or anyone, does the caster know if the _Charm_ is successful? IIRC, neither the Monster Manual or the Player's Handbook, says so, and the DMG just clarifies that the Naga _Charm_ is more powerful than the player spell. I can imagine a poor townie, seeing resistant folks getting fed to the swamp, being all "Yuuuuup... LOVE that Snake God. Let's Goooo!!! Woooo!!! SNAKE GOD!" and then going back with the others and being too scared to say anything because he doesn't know who else is in the cult. If the players can't figure out what's going on, it's a perfect opportunity for this guy to find them when they arrive. "Thank St. Cuthbert you're here! I didn't know WHO I could trust, but obviously, as newcomers to town, you're safe to confide in." 😁
I guess the players could do the same if too many of the party failed their saves, and find a way to get them released. Tho none of the descriptions of charms say so, the description of _Dispel Magic_ DOES specifically call out its effectiveness against charms 🤷‍♂. The MM says the _Charm_ is permanent, but the DMG specifies that it will "eventually wear off", with no further explanation. Presumably that's either the time listed in the PHB description of _Charm Person_ or the weekly check in the _Charm Monster_ description. Since the MM was published first, it's reasonable that it may not be completely in harmony with the others. Oh. DMG does say that the charm-ee is subject to mental commands... sooo... charmer would probably know. ☹😵‍💫
How did / does everyone else play it at their table? How did the game go, Tony? Surely you didn't finish it in one night? Unless TPK 😬

      @page121tabletoproleplaying4  5 місяців тому +1

Nope. Lots of roleplaying and exploration in the town. Into the naga's lair next week. As to how the naga knows if someone is charmed it has them come up and be personal with it (that's in the module). If the naga senses any revulsion off to the gators with you.
