- I've had many requests to talk about my live drum solo intro to 'Coming Up'.
I talk about the inspiration behind my idea, plus some background on dance music, 12" singles and early sampling. You can check out my intro (in the heat of the moment) on any Paul McCartney Live at Knebworth video here on UA-cam.
I watched the Knebworth concert segment so much, I broke the VHS tape and was gutted. Your Knebworth performance was a regular for me copying you with my 5A's on a cushion. Rewinding the fills. Trying to see and hear your hi hat and footwork. Amazing. Thank you sir.
Thanks Dave.
Just proves how influential Prince is even with the greatest artists
Very influential.
How lucky we are to have the Internet to bring us an explanation from a person totally in the know. Thank you for this and for all of your amazing playing with Paul McCartney and everyone else fortunate enough to have you drum for them.
Thank you
Always loved the "Get Back" version of Coming Up you played, Chris.
Especially the way it kicks back in Kool & The Gang style, which Dave Grohl also borrowed for the start of Smells Like Teen Spirit.😉
You have always been my favourite drummer McCartney ever used since the split of The Beatles..Something in your style and the sound of your drums ànd your power and groove. I'm a bass player myself and I love the way you play, greetings from Belgium and all the best !
Thank you
Hi Chris,
Thanks so much for sharing the video! It's so cool!!
I love this drum intro of yours, I still hear it everyday on my “tripping” CD or “get back” DVD!!
Thanks 👍🏻
How cool that you loved Pick up the Pieces and next thing you know you are in a band with Hamish. I won a competition on Radio 1 and got to see you on a dress rehearsal gig at Elstree Studios. I will never forget that night. Thanks for then and thanks for keeping me entertained now. Always look forward to these videos. Great stuff!
That was a great night.
your drums allways sounded and sounds fantastic !!!!
Thanks 🙏🏻
Slave To The Rhythm is just about (in my opinion) the best sounding record of all time! Thanks for your memories of working with PMc - I always really enjoyed that iteration of his band - seemed like you all had a great time working together? I wish that band had lasted longer - it was a tight unit!
Thanks
the snare sound on that live disc was amazing. I can listen to that concert just for the drums.
Mixed by Bob Clearmountain
Me gusto el video y siempre fuiste gran influencia en la bateria desde los 8 años saludos desde México
Hola, Chris
This is a great step by step video (from the man himself) of that very tune! A great drumming insight of what I first saw on a VHS video back in the mid-‘90s (Knebworth live)!
Thank you 🙏🏻
“This next one features our drummer, young master Christopher…”
from Tripping the Live Fantastic album.
Seeing you play this live in Toronto 12/07/89 (2nd row - close) is an amazing memory for me. Also, Flowers In The Dirt is my favorite (post-70's) Paul album.
You’re welcome 👍🏻
Out of all the live versions done of Coming Up, that Knebworth performance is my favorite, great to hear about putting those samples together.
Thank you so much. Those were great times.
That was fascinating, thank you.I loved Coming Up on that tour.
Thank you Clare
This was fantastic, Chris! I just watched the performance of Coming Up Live in Knebworth 1990. Such a great performance!!!
They were great times. Thanks.
I'll bet! Looks like it was a blast! The ride cymbal sounds great. Sounds very heavy. Earth ride perhaps?@@ChrisWhittenMusic
@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Just a modern K Zildjian ‘Heavy’ ride.
Hello sir..I love your drumming, and your stories..keep it coming..
Best regards, Jacob Dreyer
Thanks Jacob.
Hey Chris,
This might come as a left field comment, but I worked in a music ship between 89 and 95 and while there, I visited FCN who were UK distributors for Tama, Zildjian, Simmons, PureCussion and Noble And Cooley. The chap there was a guy called Andy (can't for the life of me remember his surname) great guy and awesome drummer in his own right. But I remember your name being mentioned in this "drum products day" I was 16 years old btw and very wet behind the ear. The conversation was about two new endorsers. You and Ian Moseley (Marillion) and how Ian chose the Tama Artstar II kit where's you went for the Noble And Cooley. It was one of the first short stacked kits I ever saw. Andy sang your praises not only as a drummer but a humble person. It was some months later I watched you play with Paul McCartney at Knebworth on the TV. I was immediately impressed with your playing on that gig and saw what Andy had said in you.
I guess what all this comes down to is it's great to hear you talk about your influences, your playing history and whatever else comes (as I am only 4 mins)
New follower here.
Thanks
YES FINALLYY🙌🏻🔥
Yes, '25 Years' with The Catch had brought you onto my 📡 at the time, in '83, when I was 13, and via the German 'Formel Eins' TV music show 😀 I remember my friends and myself being mightily impressed by you having an actual anvil as part of your drum set, also during other mimed TV performances 😄
I guess that was down to the record company (Metronome). Yeah, those were fun times. We did Formel Eins a few times and always stayed at a nice hotel in Munich.
@@ChrisWhittenMusic - Oh yes! I also remember your in-studio 'Formel Eins' performance of 'World Shut Your Mouth' with Julian Cope! 😀 And I did recognise you as "the guy from The Catch", also because of your distinct, spikey hairstyle back then 😊 That was quite a weird piece of music to me at that time, and I learnt to appreciate it only several years later. In fact, the songs from 'Formel Eins' I remember the most today _are_ actually the more unusual ones 🙂
And I'm impressed by your extremely varied music taste! 😀👍
Thank you for taking the time to reply, Chris! Best wishes from Wellington, NZ! 😊🎵☀️
I saw you perform December of '89 (2x) at MSG NYC. What a show, the entire show was very emotional for me and I loved how the set list was put together. One of my favorites was We got Married (believe it or not) and obviously Coming Up.
I remember that. Last shows before Christmas.
Thankyou thankyou young master Christopher, been waiting for this video, amazing, explains the inspiration for the drum intro and shows how you did it, absolutely amazing, thanks so so much Chris for doing it 👍👍👍👍👍🤗 xxx
Thanks Jo
Thank you Chris, for doing the video, I know I pestered you alot for this, along with so many people. But it's an amazing video, seeing your inspirations and telling us all about it. And seeing you play it again after nearly three decades 🙏, thank you so much. Your videos inspire so many of us, either just getting started on the drums or years on. Everybody remembers your Knebworth gig when you played this live for the first time, it's what got me into drumming 👍. It was like 😯 wow, wow and wow!!!! Thank you for sharing Chris, really appreciate it 👍
@@johayton4627 It was a couple of weeks work in the end. Checking my memory with the facts, and learning the Prince groove.
Very cool, Chris, thank you for the explanation!
As one who requested this from you in the past, I really appreciate you taking the time to put this video together. I especially enjoyed hearing the backstory and the various works by other artists who inspired you as you composed your solo. You've given me a lot of resources I need to go back and check out. The live recording includes a few guitar riffs just prior to where the bass guitar comes in. Were these samples that you triggered on your Octapad or were they played live by either Robbie or Hamish? The vocal sample and the horn/synth pops on the live recording were always something that stood out to me in addition to your drum sound. It's too bad that you eventually lost many of those samples. Great work!
My samples were odd voices, brass stabs and drum hits. Over the tour Robbie and Hamish started jamming along on guitar.
Telling us you used to play Pick up the Pieces without saying Hamish was in the touring band. Classy 👌
Great story. Great drummer.
Thank you
Great see you creating more of these vids Chris. I know how much work they are but really cool to watch!
Thanks. Yes, a lot of work.
Thanks for sharing your insight and inspiration on how you got your drumpart. I love this!
Thanks 👍🏻
Great grooves man! As a drummer myself, I always watch your videos to learn new parts for songs, you explain them and play them really well!
Thanks Luca 🙏🏻
I saw you at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de janeiro - Brazil. I went to both shows, such nice memories.
Great times.
I look forward to new video additions to your channel. You're a great communicator...I have loved your drumming over the years with the people you have played with and for. Certainly a big part of my youth and drumming inspiration!
Thank you Jeff 👍🏻
Always great Chris!!!! Pure inspiration!!!
@@Aleiuta75 🙏
Great drummer. I love the track 'Rough ride' off the 'Tripping the live.....' album.
Agreed! That snare has an amazing crack and the syncopated bass drum part is so well done.
What a fantastic video, thanks so much
Thank you
You did a great job in that coming up version
Thanks
Great vid and wicked drumming, enjoyed it!
Thanks man 😁
Thanks Chris, great idea having cymbals high etc, it really does showcase your style, and makes you great. Please do a vid on C moon, the space you used really let the song breath, and if I ever have to play a one drop, I think of you ! thanks
Thanks
❤🥁love this yeah man 🤟👍
😊
Great job young Master Christopher!
Brilliant. Chris, you're on fire!
Thank you.
thanks!
You've kept all you hair over all those decades! I loved your drumming on Flowers and the Coming Up loop was one of my favourite parts of the entire movie concert and album. 'Featuring our drummer, young master Christopher called Coming Up.' What a vibe. If I remember correctly did you also drum on the Russian album. I know you did on the single Once Upon A Longb Ago. Would love to know your thoughts on that UK single as I have always had my feelings juxtaposed on that one. One day I love it the next I don't care for it much and everything inbetween. Nigel's solo though is memorable.
Thank you for being an integral part of my favourite Paul McCartney Band lineup. Lunmpy Trousers galore!
I played on the Russian album, but not on Once Upon A Long Ago.
Sorry for having edited my previous replies. I should have done the triple check first. So you featured on the video but not the actual recording. Henry Spinetti did. Sorry I got all confused with videos and recordings etc... and you and Henry do not look alike I got that wrong too in another state of mental faculties failing me. Must be getting old I think.
I loved the band's performance on the Put it There documentary when playing those old classics. The enthusiasm of everyone's faces is a delight. Just to watch professional musicians having fun is a joy in itself.
Sincere apologies again. Thanks for heads up and have a good day.
Quality as always, Chris
Thank you
Really great idea to not use the kick drum until the whole band came in. I’ll have to remember that idea.
Makes it harder 😵💫😂 but yeah, effective.
I've listened to that live record a million times when I was very young, unfortunately the first time I saw Paul McCartney live was in 1993 and you weren't in the band anymore...
👍👍👍
Didn’t you sample “Hear the drummer get wicked” as well? And James Brown- “Get on up!”?
I don't think it was anything that obvious.
Did Paul ever use the Rickenbacker bass during rehearsals? If he did , did you like the tone of the Rick?
Never. Nor on the album sessions.
What does 'cymbal resonance system' mean in the 'Thanks to'.
It’s the bit at the top of my cymbal stands.
