  • Police Sgt. Jeff Heinrich recounts calling his wife and son, who were in the school on the day of the Florida school shooting, after helping to rescue victims.

House committee eyes Thursday vote for wide-ranging gun control legislation
By Alex Rogers, Manu Raju and Lauren Fox
The House Judiciary Committee plans to vote as soon as Thursday on wide-ranging gun control legislation after a number of mass shootings in America, including at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were killed.
The bill would raise the lawful age to purchase a semiautomatic centerfire rifle from 18 to 21 years old, establish new federal offenses for gun trafficking and for selling large-capacity magazines, and allow local governments to compensate individuals who surrender such magazines through a buyback program, according to a person involved in the matter.
It would also establish a new tax credit for the sale of safe storage devices and a criminal penalty for breaking new requirements on the storage of firearms on residential premises.
The package, known as the "Protecting our Kids Act" and first reported by Punchbowl News, would likely pass the Democratic-controlled House but wouldn't overcome a Republican-led filibuster in the Senate.
Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, said Tuesday that smaller changes "might save some American lives," but that Republicans would not agree to broader gun control measures that could stop the "daily carnage" of gun violence.
"I am being very candid with people that this is not a negotiation where we should expect the outcome will be cleaning the table on common sense, bipartisan gun safety," said Booker. "Right now, we are at a point where our nation will never be redeemed from this violence until our love of our children is greater than our love of guns and power and money."

It's been 2 years since the deadly shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida
    By Dakin Andone, CNN
On February 14, 2018, a 19-year-old gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and opened fire, killing 17 students and faculty members.
Like any school shooting, the Parkland tragedy irreparably altered the community in which it took place. But the impact of the school, its students, and the friends and family members of the victims was felt far beyond South Florida. That's because many of the survivors immediately began speaking out and confronting lawmakers about gun control reform.
Friday marks two years since that deadly shooting, and students all over Broward County, Florida, will commemorate the tragedy by observing what the district is calling "A Day of Service and Love." A moment of silence took place at 10:17 a.m. and students were expected to be released early and encouraged to participate in volunteer service projects.
Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will also be dismissed early. Mental health staff and therapy dogs will be on hand for students and staff.

the fact that his wife and son were both in the same school when this happened and he prioritized aiding the wounded student instead of going to find his family show how he cared about everyone and not only his family, he just wanted to help and save as many people as he could, this was a traumatic event for him and he probably feels bad that he couldnt save that many people

That officer stopped a school shooting from happening at Coral Springs high school in October of 2016. He was a school resource officer at Coral Springs high school and someone reported that someone had a gun and he arrested the guy. Later on he was promoted so he no longer worked at Coral Springs High School. And at the time of the Stoneman Douglas shooting he was OFF DUTY working at the baseball field at Stoneman Douglas High school and he went inside the school and rescued a kid. So he is a hero.

It’s not fair or right to act as though someone else is lesser or that their suffering is less than yours when it led them to the same place you are now- healing and adjusting to life again aren’t competitions against other hurting people.

Can't say I agree. This so called "tough man exterior" often means they can deal with things - in the moment - that many people simply cannot. Never underestimate how quickly the average person can mentally fall apart in an emergency of this nature and turn to people like this to keep it together. However, he's human and falters just like anyone should. Either that or it's repressed and contributes to things like PTSD.

BigWelshMike “ tough man exterior” isn’t about whether you crack under pressure or not it’s basically the phrase people use referring to someone who doesn’t show their emotions when it’s ok and refuses to let a guard down being someone who is able to do what you said is just someone who can be tough naturally whether exterior or interior in these situations

    • @BigWelshMike
      @BigWelshMike 5 років тому +2

Brandon Cook I get what you’re saying and I think we’re talking about the same thing but in different situations. My example is the positive side if an emergency happens and you need to keep it together and your example is the negative side where an overly stoic person would benefit from showing emotion (and probably benefit the people around them too) but doesn’t. Pros and cons to being like that and your comment shows the downside of that. 🤔

There is a central problem with all sorts of power monopolizing organizations such as police forces. Their central tendency is aggrandizement of power. The more social disorganization and crime there are, the more they can enlarge their bases of power. It means more officers, more tax dollars, more laws, more judges, more court houses, more jails and prisons, parole officers and probation officers. It means jobs galore and all the support activities for these power bases create contracts and jobs. By appealing to them for protection you are also handing over more and more power to them, which is what they want. Then wait to see if they can really solve the problem. From studies: "On Power: Its Nature and Growth," by Bertrand de Jouvenel
