When I was a kid I never got the chance to play organized hockey due to family commitments. As much as I loved playing it just wasn’t in the cards. When I was 16 some of my friends who played rep asked me to come out and tryout cause I was deadly in shinny. Well I couldn’t keep up and my dream came crashing down. I just kept playing and having fun. Played in college and university in high level intramurals. Then kept playing beer leagues just having fun I’m 52 and still playing. A bunch of my buddies that played two all ended up quitting and never played again. Morale of the story. Go out and have fun. If it’s in the cards you ll play higher level. If not, you can play for life.
I was head coach of a high school team when I was 21 and dealt with psychotic parents at a young age. Folks think their kid is going to play junior A and get scholarships to the big schools when it's a club team they are playing on and barely get 10 points a season. They don't like the hard truths when you tell them their kid would be lucky to make a D3 club team in bum fuck Egypt. One of the parents from another team was the commish for a year (biggest smallman asshole who was bullied in high school) and did such a piss poor job, the state association came in and took over everything. Four of the 6 teams in the city lost their "school teams" because parents pissed and moaned to the major school district and they decided to pull the plug. Fast forward 10 years, teams that had been around since the 70's are no more and the high school league here is glorified house league. 90% of the talented kids play on teams in Michigan 2 hours away and the local programs here have regressed.
Yep- leave it to unhinged selfish one way hockey parents to fuck up something good, healthy, competitive and fun for the kids with their own ego maniacal BULLSHIT; useless and devoid of ANYTHING positive for the children of the team. Unbelievable and almost always they're smart enough and educated enough to completely know better. SMH 35 years of seeing it, it just never changes. And what sucks is THEY sometimes suck the energy and life out of the coach or staff or club members. Shouldn't be allowed in the building. Give your kid a check, drop him off at the door, have them carry their own shit in and fuck off...
what's the reasoning behind this podcast having one exciting guest a year? Seriously, who they gonna get next, Steve Dangle?..... Give us Bobby Orr. How about Patrick Roy? Maybe Gary Bettman. This is hockey's best podcast?
