  • A lavish drama-documentary chronicling the final days of the Bourbon dynasty under the ill fated Louis XVI and his Queen Marie Antoinette.
Unlike his highly sexed forebears, it takes Louis seven years to consummate his marriage. And his performance as ruler of France is no more distinguished than his efforts in the royal bed chamber.
The French people are starving but the aristocracy is too busy partying inside the gilded palace of Versailles to take much notice. Louis tries to make a difference but his every attempt at reform is blocked by his greedy relatives. Marie Antoinette gets much of the blame for the excesses of the rich, even if she never uttered the famous words ‘Let Them Eat Cake’.
As he drifts into depression and madness, Louis and his Queen attempt to stave off a revolution. Spoiler alert: they don’t succeed.

It seems like Louis XVI was actually a pretty decent man who wanted to do right by the people, knowing that his predecessors' overindulgence basically landed on him to have no choice but to make drastic changes to. It also seems like Marie Antoinette actually supported him in this, which means, she likely knew that there would be cutbacks in financial freedom & was on board with what needed to happen to allow France to thrive. Even if the lavish life they lives had to be lessened, she was willing to go along. This also stands to reason why it has since been proven that she did NOT in fact make the statement, "let them eat cake" about the poor & that was some false claim the insurgents used to get as many people as possible thinking & feeling negatively against her as well.
So it's sad that they both ended up getting beheaded, & I think it was really due to the influence & resistance of multiple courtiers & other wealthy, high power individuals, who didn't want to pay taxes.

@@heliedecastanet1882 The demands of the bourgeoisie were fulfilled, and in the 19th century there was a balance and mutual symbiosis between the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy (after the revolutionary period after 1848). Both depended on each other. The nobility had the political experience and the savoir vivre, the bourgeoisie had the money. The demands of the revolution had been met. The peak was the period between 1872 and 1914, the so-called "Belle Epoque", which was a kind of reconnection to the age of Louis XVI. Not everyone liked that. Added to this was the social pressure from the proletariat (the "liberated" rural population who were put into the factories by the bourgeoisy). Many had an interest in now “cleansing” society totally. One of the means to achieve this was a major war. In addition, the bourgeoisie's self-confidence had increased and it believed that it no longer needed the nobility. After WW I, the bourgeoisie had emancipated itself and now set the tone together with the proletariat. Everything became different, art, architecture, society, political structures etc. But the nobility was not quite finished yet. This was ensured by WW II and the subsequent Americanism.

The nobility did not want to pay taxes and they were the lords of the estates who ruled the common poor people and so they were the cause of the down fall of everything! The oligarchy had become extreme, and the problem was a lack of communication and sharing resources from the rich to help the poor. Their king was trying hard to at least make the nobles pay taxes but he should have communicated more himself with the poor and even used some of his own money to help the poor and been stronger and set his military on the nobles and on the rebels of the third estate, and so he was too weak militarily except for helping America and that was great. Then he had had a great military and he just didnt use it much within france where it was needed against those rebels.

Wrong Prof. Colin Jones, totally WRONG ! Louis XVI did NOT WANT to be an absolute monarch , and he did NOT WANT to live up to the style of Louis XIV - as YOU falsly say in the documentary "The Rise and Fall of Versailles". How can a professor be so totally wrong ? ? ? He was EXPECTED to be so (this is something totally different ), and he was also terribly afraid of this. He wanted to rule in a way which is popular - here you are right, yes. He and Marie Antoinette (from the moment she grew out of her carefree teenager years) were - in a way - among the first revolutionaries. In here lies their tragedy. HE loved the people, and SHE wanted reforms and more thrift, and with her reforms, she attracted a lot of hostilities at Court - a Court which was also very much different from the Court in Vienna, where lightheartedness and happiness reigned.

Sorry, but Louis XVI had always considered himself as an absolute monarch. He never rejected the political theories about the divine right and the absolutism. Absolutism doesn't mean "arbitrary" or "dictatorial". Absolutism means that the source of power lays in one single source : the monarch. So, an absolute monarch can perfectly "love" the people and do his best for their happiness. An example : it is from his own power that Louis XVI decided to give to the French Protestants a civil status. He had no need of the Estates General.
