I doubt I'll ever figure out why chipmunks rolling in the dirt thrills me so much. Chucky enjoyed it so very much and I'm sure that's part of it, but the pleasure they all get is contagious and spreads to me. In a way, the hole you leave for them reminds me of the nearby swimming hole my brother and a few neighborhood friends used to frequent many decades ago.

I remember my favorite Chucky and her dirt baths. I miss you Chucky and also Wally! And my other favorites like Joony and Darly. I kinda fell in love with most of the old chipmunks. Manchu,, I don't know for how long you will be with us so I hope you visit again before winter comes because you are the last senior chippie that I know from the first batch.

우리나라에서 흔히 다람쥐라고 부르는 줄무늬다람쥐 chipmunk는 땅다람쥐 에 속한다네요..😊

CHOO-CHOO, why not get a piece of plexiglass cut a little wider than the container w/ the earth, & cyber it up on days when you know it's going to rain. Then the earth bath will always stay dry & the chipmunks ready for some fun!!!

Judy reminds me of how I felt as a little girl in Dallas, Texas, when we would go to the big community swimming pools. I would stretch, and do twirls and swirls in the deep water. ❤

@choochoostory - you could always have 2 or 3 of these planters with the organic soil so you could rotate them. When one is saturated, bring it in to dry and put a fresh dry one out.... And so on and so forth.😊😊

Amazing captures of such luxurious and vigorous "bathing." This behavior is common, it's called "dust bathing," and the effort is to get dust/very fine dry dirt up inside the fur/feathers all the way to the skin. It is thought to combat parasites such as fleas. I know that fine/powdery dust acts like an abrasive on the shiny exoskeletons of insects such that their shiny wax "sealant" is abraded and they lose their internal moisture and die! So I think a finer, drier dirt akin to dust would probably be optimal: but what could be better than these tiny movies of the amazing enjoyment of the dirt baths by the chipmunk friends :-)
Maybe have Tom build a roof for the box?
