@@carolrivers292 Walmarts are hit & miss. Depends on the location. I never tried staying at a Denny's, so I wouldn't know. As for hotels...
Some of them can be good, but as a general rule, if they have those roving security guards roaming about, that usually means 'no dice.'

    • @carcampingdude6406

@carolrivers292 Yep, I'm hearing the same more & more. One can still make good money with gig worker jobs, but a lot of it comes down to location, how competitive the market is, etc.
The majority of these jobs make people work to the bone, and when all is said and done (gas, wear & tear on your car, etc.) - as you said - you end up with very little. It's almost a race to the bottom.

Not only is this a very viable, comfortable way of living, but it can also be very healing. While it's not for everybody, I firmly believe most would benefit from the simplistic nature of this lifestyle. It can be very healing...mentally, financially, and otherwise.

Yes, food is more expensive. I make a pot of rice and beans and just keep eating out of the pot until it's gone. Two days usually. Or egg sandwiches, tomato and avocado sandwiches, tuna and mashed potatoes, and good ole pb sandwiches. I don't eat after 6 pm, which saves a lot, too. Finding free, stealth, safe overnight parking is becoming more challenging, and you are right about the crackdown. I'm seeing more Walmarts using overnight security drivers in their parking lots. Even a lot of other big box stores are putting No Overnight Parking signs up. If you're stealth enough, you can safely park a vehicle on any side street, or in any parking lot where there are cars parked all night. I've blended in at dealerships, but a lot of them have gates they close at night. I've parked on the scenic route in Florida by the beach right across from No Overnight Parking on Beach signs. I once read that one has sanctuary when on church property, as long as there are no Keep Out signs. I feel that as long as we arrive late, are being quiet and stay inside our mobile dwelling until leaving as early as possible, we aren’t at risk of offending or being offended. I've also noticed town ordinance No Overnight Parking signs in once welcoming parking lots like Bass Pro Shop. You can still park there but you are at risk of getting the knock. Supermarkets that have overnight stockers will have a few cars in the parking lot and it's easy to blend in but oftentimes the employees take their break in their car, blasting music or two at a time standing there talking and smoking, lol. Anyways, I hope you got something out of this added information. 🎉

The information that you’ve provided was spot on and very well needed. I have been living on the road full time since 2020 and for the most part… I absolutely love it.
One thing I would like to add that you didn’t mention is, one of the issues that I’ve witnessed when it comes to more rules being implemented… is usually because nomads don’t respect the areas they park/sleep at.
I’ve seen people pull up a treat areas with little to no respect at all. Loud music/noise, leaving trash EVERYWHERE, and/or not policing or cleaning up after their pets.
The idea of stealth camping in the city is to NOT have others notice that you are there. Blend in and be respectful so nobody complains. Trashing the place and/or disrespecting the area(s) will make it extremely difficult for the rest of us. I think people need to realize this or cities/states might start applying pressure all the way around.

I have lived in my Nissan nv200 compact cargo van for 8 years, and I love it. My budget is $2000 a month. $1000 for living expenses, and I save $1000 a month. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii. I am not obvious and don't stick out in a crowd. I've never had a problem with the police. My van is minimal, and it looks like a typical work van. I 🚿 shower and work out at the gym, and I eat out. Living out of my Toyota Corolla for past 2 months. I live out west on a fixed income. Everything is pricey. Lots of places definitely cracking down on overnight parking. I've been sticking to places either on BLM land or where vehicles are around 24/7: hospitals, truck stops, 24-hr gyms, etc. Food costs ate the hardest to deal with, and handling summer heat has been quite a challenge.

    • @carcampingdude6406

@lorkainenkingg8497 Same strategy here, except for the BLM land. It doesn't exist on the east coast.
I try and plan my meals, as that helps a LOT with food budgeting. However, my problem is that I'm a constant picker who needs snacks & other goodies throughout the day. And it all adds up. Marked difference I've felt over the past 2.5 years!
As for heat, I hate it. It's my kryotonite. It physically makes me ill, especially when combined with humidity. I am SO happy that fall & winter are just around the corner 👌

I also had practiced living out of my car for a couple weeks before I became "houseless". @teaadvice4996 Here's some advice...as long as you own a car, you will never be homeless at all! You will be protected from the elements, can lock your doors at night, and as long as you find safe places to sleep, you will probably never have to worry about crime. Further...
You can cook inside your car, and showers can be taken at a gym, YMCA, etc.
Bottom line, if you DO wind up having to live in your car, look at it as a fun adventure...because that's what it will be.
You may even wind up liking it more than you originally thought.
If you don't have money saved, try and get some together before going into your car. Or make sure to get a job to support yourself on the road. This is an inexpensive lifestyle, but not free.
Watch my videos and take notes. There's a lot of helpful information to be learned.
      Good luck 👍

I tried it in a Ford Focus (not ideal at all, way too small) and what helped me more than anything was spending as little time as possible in the car & lots of walking, hiking, exercise, a hobby (for me, it was photography), and very little caffeine (it tends to keep me awake). My point is, the more tired you are, the more likely you are to sleep. Oh and apps like audible, peacock, tubi, podcasts were Godsends for me. And my iPad & laptop although now my entertainment comes mostly on my phone. It takes time to figure out what works for you and what won't.

The only high Watt appliance that I would have in my vehicle is an electric kettle, these nearly 2 liters kettles and a insulated thermos you can go take a shower in a private shower room like I have at my anytime fitness gym indiscreetly in a rolling bag. I'm handicapped too I don't get shade for my little bag. The water boils in about 7 minutes you could fill that half gallon or gallon thermos and have all the hot water you need for coffee cooking hard-boiled eggs ramen noodle grits or oats. Now you don't have to use thermos bottles to cook with the largemouth ones cost too much what you do is you get stainless steel tumblers 30 Oz enough and you use them all you got to do is when you fill them up to let them thermally cook put them in something that'll keep them hotter such is a small ice chest I cooked the other day and I put one inside the arm of a pair of insulated coveralls I put a rolled-up shirt on top two hours later my three eggs were hard boiled and easy to peel. Three eggs can a tuna fish a packet of relish Jimenez you are eating good again.

You have used passive cooking to not have to maintain a constant fuel source. Once boiling, foods of all kinds can be cooked for several hours if the insulation is there. Online, passive cookers are expensive. They are not necessary. In the olden days, people used a "hay box." A wood or cardboard box filled with hay where they would place their kettle filled with boiling temperature food, and they covered it with more hay. Quilts can be used the same way, as can pillows, clothing, blankets, etc. This goes for cold items and ice also in cases of no insulated cooler. I like canned heat, as it can be used anywhere without fumes, and can boil water if done properly with a lid. Once boiling, this water can be used just as you say for the entire day, or food can be put in a passive cooker for dinner hours later. Thanks for sharing your method!

I'm not a vehicle dweller. But it seems that perhaps vans work better for those (gas wise) who don't drive a lot in their daily activities. Some seem to basically stay in the same area, with most of their driving just going from parking spot to the store to the post office to the storage unit, the gym and back to a parking spot. Some others seem to like exploring scenic sites and attractions. So maybe that is big factor.
I've worked in home health as a social worker for many years, and have had the opportunity to meet some fantastic people who have had strokes of various kinds. I am interested to see how you manage the physical tasks necessary to accommodate your living style.

Please show my videos to your patients. I hope it provides them hope. If one has hope, they can accomplish great things. But many stroke survivors fall into a deep funk - like I once did - and never recover.
It was 4 years ago almost to the day, that I was in intensive care after suffering a massive stroke due to a dissected artery. Then inpatient PT, where I was Hoyer lift only.
Today, I am fully independent again and living life on my own terms.

I am preparing to become a nomad. This is a lot of great information. Thank you for sharing it. I think bc I prefer to work overnight shifts to a certain degree it will make it easier for me to do this. I feel like people are looking during the night hours for people car camping while during the day you would possibly blend better. Downside of course is the heat during the day.
I pulled into my friends work place and immediately saw someone car camping in the parking lot. I could tell right away. I think the one thing I would do different is i would get a blackout current for behind the front seat and leave the front windows uncovered. A dark tint on the back windows with black on the reflective side out would of also made this less obvious. I think small things might make a big difference but this is my uneducated opinion. I am still learning about this lifestyle and excited to one day live it. Sorry for the long comment.

I can live without standing, but absolutely could never do this without a comfortable stable bed, and being able kneel up straight. My travel radius is only 200 miles max once every couple weeks. I do have off grid land on a dirt road with a clearing way in the back under trees where I can park my van for months, store stuff and work on projects. The day can be very long, boring and lonely, but feel it would be worse in an apartment. I just upgraded power system and got house Air conditioning, but the trick is just not to be inside the van during the day.. Doing lunch out and bars is my biggest expense, and it's not the healthiest, but I have to get my social or will go crazy in tiny metal box. I've been going to bars and not drinking try that for will power testing. I don't care for van life community meet ups and never tell anybody I'm in a van. Most often when I'm wandering around town looking for shade or free air conditioning feels the most homeless, but not as homeless as that I time I ate at soup line cause it smelled so good :). 3 best things about van life : 1. Never having to look for a bathroom 2. Being able to sleep where I parked without needing to go back anywhere or find a hotel. 3. All your stuff travels with you and within reach.

We park directly under a street light on the park side of the street (not the residential side), and sleep in the back of the car. Arrive after dark and leave fairly early in the morning. Works well for us. Haven't had any dramas yet. Camping at the beach is really a no-no these days

*Try to get the most reliable vehicle that you can. This will prevent a lot of stress and wasted money on repairs.
*Have a decent nest egg when you hit the road, of at least a couple thousand dollars. Emergencies WILL happen, and you must be prepared.
*Figure out in advance how you'll make money while traveling. Living in a car is cheap, but not free! You'll need regular income to sustain yourself comfortably.

I agree 100%. Prices have went up. Parking is more difficult. I'm in the southeast & after Helene things became even more difficult for vehicle dwellers with threats of jail for sleeping in your vehicle. What I see are people that don't quite grasp that this is a mobile lifestyle & as such requires moving around to different cities/states. Staying at the same walmart for months on end not only makes them mad but will put you on police radar. I know people that say, "but I don't want to move around." If a person doesn't want to leave an area then the only option is to find a place. Some can't afford it. The majority of people in my area living in a vehicle are older, living on fixed incomes & others lost everything in a divorce. In one rest area, on any given night there would be as many as 20 or more full time vehicle dwellers. Another big issue is people trashing the parking lots. And to compound the situation in my area, there are alot of homeless living in the woods near the lots that the vehicle dwellers are in. The general consensus in my area is if you're homeless, whether it's in a vehicle or the woods, you're just a homeless bum with a drug problem. My partner went somewhere to get food & clothing & they handed him a bag full of condoms and narcan even though he doesn't use any kind of drug. But this is what they do to everyone. If we tell anyone (we don't, we lie) we are ostracized and stigmatized. I don't know if there is this attitude everywhere but certainly here. HERE is North Carolina. We have mild weather which encourages alot of people, vehicle dwellers and homeless alike, to come here. I agree with the vehicle too. It's harder, especially as you get older, to live in a smaller vehicle but it saves money. I tried it in a Ford Focus (too small) but my Fusion is much better and gets relatively good gas mileage. I used to travel in a Chevy impala and it worked well for sleeping too.

Understand that you are car dwelling and I HIGHLY recommend you get a trailer hitch and a cargo box to the rear . My economy on my 12/17 Prius 5 Vhas gotten better since I added my Thule. Paid Retail for my steel hitch I was able to put the steel on my car myself it's very easy. I can tow my runaway camper It's dropping economy I don't recommend towing full time because the fuel. 25mpg is good for RV but it's not the best way to live I've spent last summer in the runaway grid tied only to save energy as my home had damaged door the let heat in.
Repaired door I'm back in the house and camper is my emergency shelter should my house be destroyed by hurricane. Thule cargo box can be used for the rear of runaway. If I was blm camping with people I could trust I would det camp use my car as the groceries getter I would be the most efficient vehicle that would be able to get things that need transport outside the cabin.
Having the cargo container you can carry extra fuel why is that necessary. Your car has 11.9 gallons capacity you mentioned the price of fuel where you are I guarantee you go elsewhere and you can rack up on your fuel also dirty clothes can be carried back there you can also put appliances and things of that nature. The main reason I have it on there is because I like to dumpster dive and I don't want to put things in my car that may have smells or maybe bugs.

@Use69r Living in a vehicle is essentially like living in a very tiny home. What more does a person need than a bed, shelter from the elements, a place to prepare food, etc.? Showers can be had a gyms. If a person can adjust their mindset to surviving with less stuff, living in a vehicle can be very comfortable 👍

As with any fad, or group really, when you get more participants, that's when there's more chances of bad elements seeping in, whether it's grifty business folks or members of the community doing dumb stuff that reflects badly on everyone even though it's just one person doing it, it happens.

@carolrivers292 Food & fuel will always be a vehicle dweller's biggest costs. And I don't have an issue with that. What I DO have an issue with is the insane price of both currently 😭😱

I think there should be some kind of more effective organization and defense against the more injust ordinances affecting nomads.
Then why people do not want strangers vehicles on their property without permission and get permission to do so (last night I spent the night in a Church parking lot where a secular music event took place, I asked before staying there).
Illinois Community that I stay there is a facility that helps homeless people that will let Nomad stay in their parking lot if you register with the office (I just recently printed out some people slips with my name and license plate number on it so I just hand that to the person of the having to explain it in my name but some people have problems spelling and it has a little feelings we just have to wait in the parking space number).
I can understand white people get frustrated with those who just check the garbage out on BLM land or someplace like that. It's too bad the original way of specifically only people accountable rather than collectively punishing everybody for some destructive party's actions.
I try to not spend the night in the same location overnight consecutively.
I got written permission from my mechanic to stay in his parking lot on weekends when they're closed or evenings when I'm having service done.
I'm trying to get registered with Harvest hosts so I can stay at other private places with permission.
Ultimately I wish I could get some kind of a fenced space that's a little more "Industrial" than a trailer park but a little more intended for my type of use than just trying to spend the night in the storage facility. By which I mean having a secure lot to pull into with shore power/water and some kind of a structure (possibly shipping container, or similar unit, not intended for living in) that can be used as a studio/shop space with private or communal necessities (Bathroom, Laundry) close by.

Great comment! Consider banking as much money as you can on the road, and then buying a small piece of land that you can put a tiny home on. It’s a viable option. One that I might choose down the road.

That might be true, but then why offer those services to the public?
To be sure, there are a lot of good service shops out there. But the reality is that there are also a lot of bad/shady ones, too.

@broccolirob5085 This is true. And I believe that skilled people should be paid well for the services they provide. No argument from me there. However...
I draw the line at people who are outright greedy, dishonest, and look to take advantage of others. Of which, unfortunately, there are lots of out there.

No UA-camr is pretending to live in their vehicle for sympathy. It tales courage to expose the truth, to share a personal experience. There is an alternative lifestyle that won’t go away. Many are a paycheck away of being homeless. Don’t be judgmental of UA-camrs who share realities with the public.
