- We met Dr. Tollestrup's patient Sara-Maria in this video • Anterior Cutaneous Ner... .
In part two of her story Dr. Tollestrup explains how he cured Sara-Maria of the pain from her Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment (ACNE) with a simple yet widely unknown surgical procedure. He also explains how peripheral nerve damage is the pain that can't be seen.
The good news is that almost any patient with ACNE can also find relief with this surgery.

Really just a devastating feeling. It was chronic, it was intense, and I wasn't being heard from doctors. During that 10 month period, I had four surgeries, saw 32 different doctors, ranging from gynecologists, to hip doctors, to GI doctors, to hernia specialists. I was paying $1,000 fees to random doctors that I had found on the internet to just talk about my case with them because I wasn't getting anywhere.
I started studying extensively myself, potential causes. I ended up flying to Philadelphia to look at a "sports hernia," which led me to get a plasma injection in my hip for hip instability, which also didn't help. I had eight inconclusive diagnostic nerve blocks.
Really at my wits end. Some doctors believed me, but they didn't really have anything that they could do. Some doctors insisted there was nothing in that location that could be causing me pain. It was insinuated that I was hysterical or even lying. At this point, I was like, "If I don't get healing from this, I'm going to jump off of a cliff or I'm going to ask to have my entire leg or abdomen amputated," because I was basically nonfunctional. I was on medical leave. I couldn't teach or do academic research. I'm a professor and I'm really driven. Those things are a big part of what I do. And so I just felt like I'd lost myself.
When I found him, I felt safe, comfortable, secure going to fly back to Las Vegas and have this surgery. I'm extremely grateful to Dr. Tollestrup, and I have my life back. I'm back to researching, writing academic articles, hopefully back to teaching soon. And I wish there were more doctors willing to listen, to put in the work.
Thank you 🙏
After suffering horribly for the last year & a half, finally getting dx’d a few months ago & enduring abdominal injections monthly that are becoming less & less effective - there may be hope for me yet! I want my body (and my life!) back!!! 🙏❤️
So glad I found these videos. I’ve been dealing with LRQ pain localized to a finger tip size for a year now. I’m 10 doctors in, 1 hernia surgery with no alleviation of pain (actually made it worse), and scheduled for elective appendectomy tomorrow despite the fact that all tests (ultrasound, sono, CT, MRI, colonoscopy, etc) find no source of pain. Yesterday I found my 10th dr (pain management) who suggested ACNES and the symptoms fit almost exactly. Came on suddenly (which is what has been the hang up for most drs), is worsen by lifting/exercising/hiking/walking (causing me to stop my very active lifestyle and have to stop work since I travel and lift for work). I was having the appendectomy in hopes that was the source of the pain, I just want to get back to work and life, but can’t with the pain. Really hoping this new dr can help and really understands ACNES.
For background info, I am 35, female, very healthy, very active until this. I’ve been called a “medical mystery” by 5 drs now bc my health is so good/no history of any issues.
Localized pain in the abdominal area is really a good indicator for ACNES--most other pain seems to be dispersed. Hope you have found some relief!
@@samanthap2686I hope you can get the help that you deserve. I'm going through the same thing, except they took my gallbladder out that wasn't bad. I've been in severe pain for 4 months, since they removed my fallopian tubes. I came across this doctor, but there's no way I can pay out of pocket for a surgery like this. 😢
Thank you for sharing this procedure Dr. Tollestrup.
Do your patients complain this ACNES condition is worse when first waking up from sleep?
Have your patients reported success with injection treatment to the nerve with steroid?
Thank you!
So how do you find the right doctor in your area?
Can post herpetic neuralgia from massive shingles outbreak cause ACNES??
Thank you for the video! After a year of pain endless tests with no results a hernia surgeon we saw actually telling my husband it was not a hernia mentioned it could be entrapped nerve as it occurred as soon as he changed an extremely heavy Jeep tire. We are going to a pain doctor Monday. Sara Maria, just wondering if you had any nausea or vomiting or issues eating a full meal at times? Thanks
How can I get in touch with this doc
Could this problem have occurred during XLIF surgery? I have had left abdominal pain since this surgery almost 4 years ago.
Dr. T taught me that if you have the same pain or a new pain after the healing time has passed for a surgery, it is considered a peripheral nerve problem unless otherwise ruled out.
You should be examined for a peripheral nerve problem. Any surgery can put you at risk for a damaged peripheral nerve.
As he said in the video, medical professionals are not trained in school about peripheral nerves. Therefore they are scratching their head and don't know what to do except send people to the pain management graveyard.
@@Barb61765 Dr Tollestrup has received my details and says it's too complicated. I was prepared to travel from Australia but there are plenty of doctors here who aren't interested in helping me, so why kill myself to get to Nevada!
Sara Maria, can you explain how the pain felt please ? Thank you
Mine was very localized to my one pain 'spot' but very intense--like getting your finger caught in a car door but amplified and then radiated outwards approximately the size of a baseball.
Anyone in new york you can recommend
