I was an infant when Carson started out. He was an old gentleman when he retired. I'm still amazed by how good he was at this job, it's his positive demeanor no matter what. Carson was smart enough to get all his tapes kept in his family, though I can't imagine he could've predicted UA-cam. This stuff will be generating laughs for centuries probably and serve as a benchmark to future entertainers. Plus it's not blue material, mostly clean. Carson is still killing it almost 20 years in the grave. Pretty mind-blowing.

Don't you wish someone would have figured out how to extend life by a couple hundred years so Johnny could still be on TV? I guess that's cruel considering it's a real rigmarole to do a show like this 5 nights a week. But man, I enjoyed this show in my very early days, right through to 1992. I was 19. He was voted the #1 favourite guest of all time in a poll of late night talk show hosts.
What seems so effortless and spontaneous was actually the result of months - literally months - of careful preparation by him before his appearances.
3 months beforehand, he would start writing his guest routine, send it to the host, then back-and-forth communications to refine it and iron out any glitches.
Absolutely nothing was left to chance. Every word scripted, and rehearsed multiple times.
(That's not a criticism - he was such an enormous talent)

Just look at Carson's personality compared to the hacks on today's late-night shows. Always in control, always allowing the guest freedom to be the center of attention, and actually engaging with the guest instead of simply playing games or trying to outdo the guests. This is why he was an icon and lasted 30 years, something none of today's hacks will come close to.

Also if Johnny was on the air today, he'd be the best late night host. A crazy thing happened when I saw Martin Short and David Spade on Carson. As I was watching the show from the audience, the short guy sitting right in front of me looked familiar - I mean his head did. He had really short black hair. When the show was over I noticed he was not following everyone leaving towards the exits . Instead he was walking down to the stage. That guy was Adam Sandler, there for his buddy David Spade! He was on his first year or two with SNL. A great time!

You could always tell when a guest was top-tier, when Fred Silverman (or was it Freddie de Cordova?) - chimes in off camera to give an update while a guest was on the couch. And it happens here. Martin Short was always next - NEXT level. Too bad Hollywood nearly ruined him with their garbage.

The story is Carson put the show above his family, way above according to his wives and children.
If only their private lives could stay private!!
Oh well the children are enjoying his money now!!

Not the one(of Carson's kids) who is dead.
Anyway re: "balancing career and family" Most men of his era and I suspect a great deal of today's(though they may be reluctant to admit it) still put their careers/professional lives 'above[their] family'. If one is to succeed in the "real world" , there really isn't much choice but to relegate "family" to the back seat. But it's like you say, come time - you won't find many of those aggrieved family members refusing to cash the checks courtesy of the 'old man's' lifetime of labor which may have appeared early on to be at the family's expense, emotionally. In the case of Carson there was a certain degree of selfishness involved "the wife", "the kids" served more as accoutrements ...he really couldn't be bothered , too self-involved . Most males like this should just remain single, eschew the procreation aspects , bang as many bitches as they can , perhaps settle eventually on one to act as nursemaid in your dotage ...back in the day and I'm sure to some extent still , a lot of dudes want to have their cake and eat it too . You see how this is working for women you have vainly attempted to follow in the footsteps of their male predecessors ; "having it all" lol
