- Hi guys welcome to Goodfoodwrite and episode #1!
Today we head to 89 Circuit Road to cover a 66-year-old Chye Tow Kueh stall! Its story began in 1965, the year of Singapore's independence. And that truly says a lot about Uncle Zhang's craft.
This hawker is named MacPherson Market & Food Centre and is lodged between Mattar (Exit B) and MacPherson (Exit D) MRT Stations. There are a fair number of bus services that stop a mere 150 metres from the hawker, and if you're travelling by car, ample parking lots surround it too.
No cash in hand? Fret not, a UOB and DBS ATM are located at 79A Hawker Centre and another DBS ATM sits just across the street at MacPherson Community Centre.
Uncle Zhang looks to be in his late 70s, but that is no reason for the average wait of 5-7 minutes PER PERSON while queuing (longer if a fresh batch of kueh is required). He takes pride and patience in making each order individually and trusts his customers to pay and take their respective change accordingly.
Starting prices are...
White - $2.50
Black - $3.00
Yin Yang (mix) - $5.00 (if I remember correctly!)
To be fair, the white CTK was slightly too salty for my palette! But maybe with some chilli, it would balance out. Let me know what you think and if you feel another CTK stall can wrestle this out of contention as my favourite, enjoy!

RIP brother🙏🏻😞
Very good video introducing hawker food--char tao kuey
*Update: Uncle Zhang is back, he said he didn't have a fall but his bone was loose. Couldn't hear what he said proper but i suspect it was the hip he was referring to. Visited him on 20th Jan!
Happy Chinese New Year! ❤
Oh wow .. I’ve never tried it before but it looks really good! Thanks for sharing. Best of health to you !

💯💯
looks really good! hope you will do the best BA CHOR MEE next time too!
Oooo that one is a good one. My current favourite is Macpherson Minced Meat Noodle at Tai Thong Crescent. Which is your current BEST?
Wa honestly that's a tough question cos I really love bcm! Haha but if I were to list one I would go with lai heng bcm at tpy lorong 6! Or there's one called Lina bcm around tpy as well that's quite good to me! But I'm always on a look out for good bcms! Will keep a look out for your videos for food suggestions 😋
Heh lemme try the one you recommended some time soon! Must be pretty awesome!
@@pgjh1990 oh yes I was told of Lina! The Indian chap selling bcm is something that really stands out. Its like seeing a Chinese uncle at old Rex cinema coffeeshop flipping prata. Unorthodox!
Yes please try Macpherson Minced Meat Noodle (they're on Instagram too), and I will try Lina's!
0:52 they are mostly on afternoon shift, open afternoon onwards til dinner time. During the covid period it was quieter as some stalls just don't operate for some reason. The blk 80+ hawkers open in morning and closed in afternoon.
I'm die-hard fan of this stall since 70s. Disappointed to find stall closed even though it's his rest day (Wednesday). Sad to hear from his neighbor, he fell and hurt himself. Went back today.. still closed. Must be quite serious fall. Hope he get well soon.
OH NO. I will pay him a visit when i can to also check up on him. Uncle's a tough guy, so i am hoping to see him back on his feet soon. Fingers crossed. Thanks for sharing this info! Also, where would your next go to CTK be after 89?
@@goodfoodwrite7817 keep me posted on his health. I'm clueless where to get the equivalent of his standard. With him around there was no need to search elsewhere.
@@fooksingwan4069 now we gotta look at the cup half full and take this opportunity to try others! I've tried Pek Kio market, Heng Leong Carrot Cake, and though it's good, with good portions.. but it lacked saltiness. Felt like no chai poh inside. At least the kueh was handmade too. A friend of mine told me to try Fu Ming at Redhill. But I've yet to.
@@fooksingwan4069 I'm just here and the stall is still closed! 🥺🥺🥺
R.i.p😢🙏🏿

Mee Kia dry
Food legend but is it halal?
I would assume it's totally NOT! 🙏🙏 Definitely no halal certification for this stall my good sir.
Black better
The white must eat with chilli. But.. be warned, his chilli is very spicy!
