I don't actually think anything substantial was presented throughout the whole movie, it almost like the whole runtime was just waiting for the last 20 minutes to happen. I think the characters were well thought out but really lacked the development in terms of their relationship. I also think the message of gentrification as a whole could have gone a lot futher. The Kitchen was a wonderful movie but I hated the ending. I'm so over these ambiguous endings. We stick around for 2 hours (longer for some movies) only to be forced to drum up our own conclusion. It's so annoying. It seems like more and more film makers are going this route.
Ok so the film is basically about a man that for whatever reason didn't play a role in his sons upbringing and seems to care only for himself because he had to raise himself. We then spend the entire time waiting for him to open up and step up and lead the residents of The Kitchen in a last stand against those that wish to evict them. Instead we get the confession of him being the boys dad and his front door finally being breached. Maybe this is lined up for a second film, otherwise I feel i wasted my time watching this to the end because we already knew what the end revealed to us.
thats not the point, the ending isn’t supposed to be a reveal or twist or any other plot device. It is simply a powerful moment of vulnerability they share before their supposed detainment. which serves well imo.
My point is the whole movie didn't need a futuristic vibe to tell the story. Alot of the scenes were drawn out to make viewers feel an emotion but they could've done alot more with the plot and the scenery. Not a bad movie it just gives futuritic Top boy vibes.
Because illegally squatting in some sort of post apocalyptic shanty town in London isn’t going to happen in the 2020s, they needed to set the parameters for that to happen. Police riot teams don’t just breach council estates in general. But I really wish more was done, I was expecting top boy blade runner personally, the best part of the movie was the gang who went out and stole food, I can’t remember the names. The movie should have been centred around them.
@@lunafreya5887 My point exactly they did have the one scene where the gangs raided the people's homes after Lord Kirchner's death but golee they could've left out some of the scene with Issac man they were pointless and forced
I love slow burning films. If The Truman Show was a real show, I’d watch it all day and night 😅 i don’t know why but I really enjoy very slow and ‘boring’ films.
I actually really enjoyed this film. I always like movies that have nothing really going on in them. Film like that have me watching them multiple times. I don’t know why but I really like slow paced movies. I enjoyed this film a lot. I was devastated at the loss of a certain footballer and the ending was upsetting. I grew to love Izi and Benji. I loved the sense of community when the police came and the skate rink. Everyone looked out for each other. We don’t know what happened at the end but if we saw the end of Lord Kitchener, I think we can assume the worst. It was an upsetting film. Even the group of guys Benji kept ending up with weren’t really bad guys. It was all love there. I will watch this one again. Also, I saw some parts of five million merits in this film which is fitting as Daniel Kaluuya was the main character in that Black Mirror episode. I didn’t really put two and two together until the end as I didn’t realise he was the producer until the end.
I think the movie was all over tthe place. It opened story paths and never finished them. It wasted its time so much with empty scenes, where characters stand still for minutes on end. What happened to Benji's girlfriend? What happened to Jase and his Daughter? Where is Jase's wife? Why is the gang portrayed as villains in one scene, doing good in the other scene, acting like malcolm x in the 3rd scene and having fun in the 4th scene? What really happens to the trees? Why did Izi leave Benji the first time? That was so irritating. A classicals storytelling like benji getting into real trouble (like foreshadowed) and Izi coming and saving him or benji and his soon-to-be-girlfriend getting into trouble together and benji realizing his mistake and making the right choice of taking her and saving her and thus doing/learning something about responsibility or with a twist on the gang being portrayed as villains at the beginning and turning into antiheroes or or or.... would have been the far better choice imo. The movie was overall very bland, lackluster and mostly directionless. It had good visuals tho.
i think it’s pretty clear that the gang was never really portrayed as villains. i think izy just meant they are bad influences bcs they fight back and that could get them in lots of trouble. overall i think ur other questions are obvious. like the girlfriend- she doesn’t have parents anymore. she will probably become just like benji if she doesn’t have anymore family. will probably stay with friends, a gang, etc. jase and his daughter will most likely become homeless too, just like all the other ppl there that can’t afford somewhere else to stay. they were a community and at the end, they did what they always do. they continued to look out for each other. The film was well made, the acting was good, but we basically knew the story when the father first met the boy, we knew he was his father, but we expected more from the movie. I for one thought Kano was going to stand up for the kitchen and lead the young rebels in a stand against those trying to evict them. Thats what I kept waiting for. the big raid when it was do or die and kano to become unselfish. As a fan of Top Boy I loved this and I agree we could almost see the way social housing could be come the norm and that the police want us to become homeless I give it a 10/10 I love British tv and movies that are gritty tense like this but then there is Criminal Record starring former Dr Who Peter Capaldi I fully recommend it to you when it's finished and also Trigger Point Also I knew I'd recognised The Kitchener as Ian Wright he did a great performance despite having a few scenes it reminded me of Samuel L Jackson in Do The Right Thing as he was a DJ in that film
Genuinely. I’m not hating. It takes me a lot to say this about anything really. I was so so so disappointed. Maybe recency bias, but I truly believe that’s the worst film I’ve ever watched. I’ve watched worst films that had lower budgets and worse actors but this was just nothing. It was literally about a guy working at a funeral place and a boy who lost his mum. I genuinley didn’t see any plot to this film. So so so so poor. Shame really.
I think what got me the most was that is seemed to be about a man who couldn’t change the world around him and was stuck even when he achieved his goal
I'm an avid fan of the 'Top Boy' and 'Black Mirror' series, and I'm eagerly anticipating 'The Kitchen.' As your review contains spoilers, I plan to watch it in its entirety once I've had the chance to see it myself.
They wouldn't have been killed just arrssted, the only person we actually see die from the police is lord kitchener and they only killed him because he was a powerful person in their community they wanted to send a strong message to the people of the kitchen, there would have been no reason for them to kill izi or benji as neither of them really seemed to be that influential among the people in the kitchen there is also the fact that benji technically wasn't even from the kitchen anyways and izi had also technically already left as he brought the apartment in the city so yea they would have just been arrested and very likely let go shortly after, izi might have been sent to jail for a few months for hitting the police officer with the big red key but yea there would have been no reason for them to die in the kitchen
It's fairly obvious to me that at some stage during the undoubtedly lengthy and tedious development process, some well-meaning white upper middle class gatekeeper/script editor/creative producer decided to strip out most of the story and entertainment value in order to make sure young black people in the UK do not miss the film's message: we don't like fun-loving black criminals, so get it together and grow up to be hardworking but struggling citizens who are quietly obedient when told that London is too good for you and it's time to move out to boring Croydon or Orpington.
I thought this was supposed to be a post apocalyptic action or dystopian movie. Slightly disappointed it was not what I was hoping it would be but it’s still a good movie nonetheless. Considering how much potential lore and culture there was to be explored in the Kitchen itself, i feel this could have been a short series of maybe 1-2 seasons
Spoiler** so all possible endings.. 1. unlikely but maybe the one knocking was the girl he liked or something trying to save them. 2. police backup from the knocked out officer he fought right outside his door. (personally i think this was the reason and he was dumb for not moving the body if he was unconscious.) 3. the gang leader snitched on the boy since we betrayed their morals, snitched to the police knowing he is most likely in the dad apartment.
This movie (imo) had such a top boy-paralel universe type feel to it. Why does staples and izi have beef? (Like others has stated.) The movie was decent until, the ending. This should've been a show instead of a movie.
Am glad for this review, because the movie was confusing, i would have to watch it a few times to get it. What i really want to know is, what could of happend in 20 years time for it to be acceptable to do this, if that was explained the whole movie would make sence. This is not a movie you go into thinking you need to over think things.
Ending was lazy, point blank we need a part 2 to redeem this movie. The ambiguous endings are cliche now and we want stories, dont need a happy endings but a ending. Please pick a side!
I thought this was a good film with a very powerful message. The people that I personally know that didn’t like the movie was because they were expecting it to be like top boy just because Kano is in it.
Wouldn’t benji be and heir to what ever his mum had left It’s understood that benji ad never been in the kitchen his whole life His mum had money for a more upscale funeral Wouldn’t he be a ward of the state or taken to his grannie
I really disliked this move. Mainly because it´s not the typical movie with very little pace changes and I was expecting more intense feelings and a closed ending. I was expecting something different
Timothy 3: 1-5 In the last days people being lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
This film was great at creating a real feeling for dystopian future, I felt like I was there. But in truth the film was a bit boring, I also found myself not sympathetic to that life, I just see them as people who refuse to work and contribute to society. As someone who came from poverty and areas like this, I worked my way out and bought myself a house - only to be surrounded by social housing people. It’s wrong to mix the classes people want out they will work for it. If they don’t, leave them there. It’s not fair that everyone in the middle takes the heaviest load.

As a fan of Top Boy I loved this and I agree we could almost see the way social housing could be come the norm and that the police want us to become homeless I give it a 10/10 I love British tv and movies that are gritty tense like this but then there is Criminal Record starring former Dr Who Peter Capaldi I fully recommend it to you when it's finished and also Trigger Point
Also I knew I'd recognised The Kitchener as Ian Wright he did a great performance despite having a few scenes it reminded me of Samuel L Jackson in Do The Right Thing as he was a DJ in that film
All I see is Sully. It’s gonna take more than a movie like this for Kano to shake Sully off. The movie was just ok was hoping for much more.
Shame really.
movie had great potential but felt rushed as if someone tried to condense a 3 season series in a less than 2 hours movie
Yeah it was good, had a powerful message but just felt like the pacing was an issue!
Thanks! Yeah, it's definitely worth a watch
Dont bother its absolutely dire!
I loved it 😊.. Should be made into a Series on Netflix 🥂
It's fairly obvious to me that at some stage during the undoubtedly lengthy and tedious development process, some well-meaning white upper middle class gatekeeper/script editor/creative producer decided to strip out most of the story and entertainment value in order to make sure young black people in the UK do not miss the film's message: we don't like fun-loving black criminals, so get it together and grow up to be hardworking but struggling citizens who are quietly obedient when told that London is too good for you and it's time to move out to boring Croydon or Orpington.
i hope they make a second one with izi becoming the leader of the rebellion group
Loved it accept for the ending
This has already happened in Kowloon. This is happening everywhere.
Ian Wright 😊
Ian Wright Wright Wright!
I love this kind of endings, but NOT in this movie. This kind of ambiguous ending was so unfitting for this movie. Unecessary and kind of pretentious.
Love it so so very sad 😔
loved it, ending pisses me off, i don't need any more pissed off endings of movies lol
Well, a lot of brooding, some mild crime and police brutality but nothing really happened during the entire movie.
Hey everyone
What exactly is the name of this accent i really loved it.
Very disappointing movie...never really hit the mark.
Only good thing was Kano.
Spoiler**
so all possible endings..
1. unlikely but maybe the one knocking was the girl he liked or something trying to save them.
2. police backup from the knocked out officer he fought right outside his door. (personally i think this was the reason and he was dumb for not moving the body if he was unconscious.)
3. the gang leader snitched on the boy since we betrayed their morals, snitched to the police knowing he is most likely in the dad apartment.
Lot of people missing the fact evictions of social housing and housing crisis is currently a huge thing going in in Uk & Europe.
This movie (imo) had such a top boy-paralel universe type feel to it. Why does staples and izi have beef? (Like others has stated.) The movie was decent until, the ending. This should've been a show instead of a movie.
It’s a piss poor movie
What powerfull message? You should not run away as a fatherr?
It was slow at times but it was good the message behind it…
Yeah it had a powerful message for sure!
I'm perplexed how many ppl don't like slow burn movies. There's a time for every type of movie, loved it tonight, but ending pissed me off lol.
This movie was crazy
This means it might be a part 2
True!
Wow dont waste ur time.....he doesnt tell anything you wouldn't already know
I thought izi friend with the daughter was Benji dad
It was a good movie but there were a lot of holes in the story some things should’ve gone deeper in depth hopefully there’s a second film
Beautiful movie
Definitely. Very powerful
So what happened in the end? They got in?
I think it's deliberately done to be left up to interpretation. So that they could reinforce the power of the message of fighting to survive
Wouldn’t benji be and heir to what ever his mum had left
It’s understood that benji ad never been in the kitchen his whole life
His mum had money for a more upscale funeral
Wouldn’t he be a ward of the state or taken to his grannie
Need that Staples spin off about his rise to power: “A STAPLE IN THE GAME” 👀
Great movie!!
Why couldn’t Benji just stay at his mums place I don’t get it
I really disliked this move. Mainly because it´s not the typical movie with very little pace changes and I was expecting more intense feelings and a closed ending. I was expecting something different
i kinda liked the movie but there were a lot of things done wrong
I had high hopes for the Kitchen. Highly disappointing film. Peak drama with no resolve. The film "Athena" does what the Kitchen could not.
Boring ass movie - waste of time. Doesn't come even close to top boy or black mirror.
Everything reminds me of Gaza 💔💔💔 free Palestine 🇵🇸
This film was great at creating a real feeling for dystopian future, I felt like I was there. But in truth the film was a bit boring, I also found myself not sympathetic to that life, I just see them as people who refuse to work and contribute to society.
As someone who came from poverty and areas like this, I worked my way out and bought myself a house - only to be surrounded by social housing people. It’s wrong to mix the classes people want out they will work for it. If they don’t, leave them there.
It’s not fair that everyone in the middle takes the heaviest load.
I feel really sorry for you.
it was sooooooo slooooooooow
Yeah that was it's major problem, the fact it was just so slow!
Movie is mid tbh
Great story . Bad ending
That's fair! Too ambiguous?
This was a bad movie
Do you think?
Worst fucking movie in the last 100 years
fantastic movie with an abysmal ending.
First
🥱🥱🥱 such a waste of time. The ending was shocking
go watch transformers then and shut up
He cant be the father because of the nose size difference
