It was refreshing to watch someone honor notions of class-struggle while also imbuing the broad spectrum of subject matter with the dignity and respect it deserves.
common critiques of jeremy often boil down to blatant anti-intellectualism. we're so used to being fed upbeat, scripted celebrity interviews that when an actor is actually invested in his craft, is honest about his method, and speaks with eloquence and passion, people interpret it as being overly self-involved and pretentious.
The most common complaints I’ve seen were about how difficult his professional mentality is to work with on a day to day basis. I think it’s very valid to be frustrated when someone makes your work environment much worse, even if that is serving the art. So I disagree with your assertion.
@@DSQueenie they’re getting paid millions of dollars for their performances on succession. the least they could do is commit to the role imo. if he’s being a menace to his fellow actors and crew, yeah that’s an issue. i don’t think that’s an accurate portrayal of his method though
Professional ball players make millions too. However I suspect if a player became insufferable they’re getting cut, even if the irritating behavior resulted in a stat bump. Kaepernick was cut in 16, despite having a statistically better season than 15. There’s something to be said about unit cohesion.
@@Julia-hj7nn the fact that any of them said anything about his behaviour at all tells you it was pretty bad. Usually actors wouldn’t criticise each other because they know that everyone has their own way of doing things. In the end “alls well that ends well” but I think Strong got some very fair and reasonable criticism for his behaviour on set. Things are changing in the film industry, gone are the days where Daniel Day Lewis could terrorise the ADs and crew as part of his “method”.
Sincerity is seen as performative to people who are too nihilistic to feel anything besides apathy and irony. It’s literally his job to feel things as genuinely as possible so as to portray his character’s emotions with humanity and realism.
His performance in Succession was phenomenal. He’s great at what he does and he respects his craft. I think those calling him pretentious just want to bring him down to their level. Great analysis!
I think there’s a genuine annoyance when hard workers work hard, and then do well. That yes, he was blessed to know his passion early, but it was through his sheer will and EFFORT to lead in a series that will be beloved for decades. His admittance to being uncomfortable when interviewed and unprepared is sympathetic enough, let alone knowing his background as a constant outsider. Appreciate you making this video!
What have we come to that when you are actually serious and motivated people label it as pompous? I admire him. He made the entire show richer and more impactful.
Let us be honest, he is simply too smart for Hollywood. That is why people consider him pretentious or pompous. They simply don’t understand what he is talking about. They have no idea what “dramaturgically”means, they’ve never heard of Glenn Gould, they have no idea who Chekov is, they’ve never read any of the books he mentioned in his interviews. He is not pretentious, he is simply intelligent and dedicated. Which is a shock in the modern world.
indeed, this whole wave of anti-intellectualism has been disastrous. i mean, i ain't nowhere as erudite as him, but instead of mocking him, i try to learn more from what he says. that's the way it should be -- mocking people who are just well-versed in all kinds of things is just stupid.
He reminds me of Adam Driver, with the attention to their craft, the all-in dynamic, the devotion to, and respect for, the work, craft and characters. Both not coming from Hollywood, both being considered oddities. Both being very thoughtful and eloquent.
Amazing video! I’ve watched so many of his interviews and tried to put my finger on why people think he’s pretentious when all I can see is exactly what you said. A misunderstood genius in a world where people don’t see acting as an art form anymore. So happy Jeremy is making me love tv shows as an art again! Thank you!
With some time from succession now, when I think of the show, I think of Strong and Kendall first. Succession goes from a great show to an iconic one because of him.
Heis a sef- made, brilliant, intense, perfectionist monster of an actor. He has culture and inteligence and sensitivity. In our mediocre times, these qualities rub people the wrong way. Congrats on this analisys!
Really solid video. I really think that he's a true artist, and people are so not used to seeing one. He's not a bit pretentious, he's just a real artist who's passionate about his craft.
Jeremy Strong revitalized my interest in Media. Only thing Im upset about is I'll probably never see a show or actor like this again. Definitely going to be following where Jeremy and his Career goes. Guys a legend
What if I told you that I will be. You probably won’t believe me right? Because I have said, which make me seem unserious. Wild how that works, but makes sense. I guess we’ll see what happens…
He help make succession. So many amazing scenes and months are bc he was so in tune with his character. We wouldn’t have had Jess without him!!! He convinced the writers she was pivotal for his character so she stayed. I’ve listened and read so many of interviews and I could hear him talk about his craft for hours
When you come from a working class background and have to claw your way to find success, you have to be intense and work harder and more wisely than all the nepo kids to get to Yale and achieve so much. I think he's bloody brilliant, he's extremely intelligent and has a deep understanding of the human psyche, he deserves every success. He sounds v thoughtful and well grounded in interviews and appears to be a great husband and dad. I think Jeremy Strong is an absolute acting genius. The very best on screens at the moment. I can't wait to see more of his work.
I remember seeing him in the big short and thought he was great. I watched trial of Chicago 7 and thought he was excellent, then I binged succession and thought his performance was phenomenal. Truely an incredible actor. I think he’s got big things ahead of him.
I think so long as he treats others with respect and doesn’t think he is somehow superior then let him do whatever works for him. He is reaching for something, which is certainly preferable to treating the audience like fools and phoning your performance in.
Kendall was my favorite character in the show and its filled with incredible characters and performances. I didn't realize he was getting clowned on, honestly this approach is quite intense but if it works (which it does) then I can only commend it. For someone to be this passionate about their craft is incredibly admirable, especially in a world where a lot of media that is being produced can feel heartless and purely profit focused (I'm looking at you Disney). Succession is just a fantastic show and I remember watching the credits roll on that final episode thinking "this might be the best show I've seen" and how rare it is that we get something as good as this. I hope Jeremy gets the credit he deserves for putting so much into Kendall. I certainly wont forget him.
Thank you for watching and your incredibly thoughtful comment. I agree. I think Kendall Roy will live on as one of the iconic characters of at least this decade, if not longer.
what an amazing video! So well done and researched. I enjoyed your commentary so much! Jeremy Strong seems like he's so passionate and joyful about his work. Kendall truly felt like the realest character, you couldn't help but be absorbed by his story and I think Jeremy is a huge reason the show gained such dedicated stans. I see people tweet about Kendall Roy everyday, months after the finale hahaha Subscribed! Can't wait for more people to find your channel. :)
Yes, I definitely think his commitment to the role added a little extra! Thanks so much for your kind comments and subscribing - glad to have you own board!
Right. And I LOVE when Jeremy mentions books or music that inspires him. He is a reader who educates himself to grow as a person. That's not "pretentious" - that's super smart and it's inspiring too.
Genius is normally misunderstood. Jeremy Strong is a collosus of our times! I love his work. it's a treat watching him. Keep doing whatt you are doing Jeremy!
Amazing video essay! Yes, he seems 'weird' next to the other celebs but he is an outsider that broke in using hard work and talent. He deserves all the fame and I hope we will see him next in other exciting projects
Succession felt too real because of his performance as Kendall. It really elevated every scene he was in and pushed everyone else in that scene to keep up with him.
I'm so grateful the algorithm pushed me this video! I find Strong's interviews to be MUCH deeper and nourishing than the typical stuff; I have never felt his quoting is pretentious at all, rather, he seems like a very earnest, self-actualized person who just understands that he values things that many other people don't, and he isn't ashamed of it. I think people who are sort of dim think anything intellectual is pretentious, and people who are sort of shallow can't comprehend that others find genuine meaning in things.
Being so genuine rn when I say his GQ essential items video changed me. I was on the derision train with everyone else..but was completely moved by what is just pure sincerity and passion. He's been a real inspiration for me since. "the work of every true artist is the salvation of every other." and in this moment his is mine.
I don't care if he plays the method actor thingy as long as he gets the results that he wants, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, he gets his due therapy to process all that shit after he gets the job done; like seriously guys, we've had way way more than our fair share of lost talent to depression and mental issues.

brilliant analysis and editing, and i love how much research was put into this! i, like you, admire how hard he works and clearly the results are always phenomenal. i find so much of the backlash to him strange as, to me, he just comes across as an incredibly intellectual guy who's had to fight the odds to achieve what he's achieved and wants to talk about that with passion. it's also interesting to note that in all the recent videos of him at the stage door of "an enemy of the people", he comes across as such a genuine, kind, and soft-spoken man - not pretentious at all! again, bravo on this video!! "misunderstood genius" feels exactly right to describe him
Succession quickly became in one of my favorite tv shows, one of the main reasons, besides the script was the magnificent performance of Jeremy. Great job with this video! Regards from Peru.
With Kendall, had Jeremy Strong laughed at him rather than actually believing he IS him, it would not have been an iota as cringey and touching to watch him. I hated his guts but also felt so sorry for him. In Roman Roy, Culkin might have had a slightly easier time because not taking oneself seriously is part of Roman's character. He is a clown. Kendall wants to be the big, important, serious (but also cool) dude and he takes himself so seriously, it's cringey and painful to watch.
"the writing is everything" and you certainly killed it. A well written content that invoked emotions. I am surprised to see you just sitting at sub 800 subs Anyway here is a new subscriber looking forward to see new vids like this in the future :)
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - really appreciate it! Great to have you on board - and hopefully have a new video coming out next month! :)
I had heard the rumors, I heard all the talk surrounding The New Yorker piece on him. But I went in with an open mind and honestly I just respect him so much more as an actor having read it. Jeremy gives his work the respect and sacrifice he does, because it was his calling. He hustled and worked his ass off, and forged a method that is very unlike a lot of method acting I hear about because THAT is how you make a name. But he clearly has a sense of reality that grounds him when he’s done with the character; he is a vigorous reader, he absorbs knowledge like a sponge. He’s the theater kid who made it and THE actor who should’ve played Kendall Roy.
It's fairly the best video on Jeremy Strong I've seen! The depth of thoughts and the overall quality of the production amazes! I wish your channel to grow really big so more people could enjoy your work! Stay true to yourself, Ryan, always. Your videos stand out!
People who overuse the word "pretentious" always come off as a red flag to me. More often than not, it's said as a result of a repressed inferiority complex or intellectual insecurity
Really enjoyed this breakdown of Jeremy. I only heard of Succession last year and caught up and loved the final season this year and I can say, I legit could not imagine anyone else playing Kendall. I feel like you can’t talk about Kendall without talking about Jeremy and his craft. Also seems like just a genuinely cool and nice dude.
You hit the nail on the head with every single issue you addressed in this video. The way you defined genius at the end is definitely a fitting description of Jeremy Strong. Personally, I'm willing to boldly declare that Strong's performance as Kendall in Succession is my favourite series performance of all time. He was undeniably incredible throughout the entire show. Thank you for this very well-crafted video. You delivered all your points with great precision. You have certainly earned yourself a brand new subscriber.
This man rules and he clearly keeps learning through all forms of art to inspire him. This man is a success and should be celebrated for his work and his work ethic
Who's seen The Apprentice Film? I'm so excited I'm going tomorrow. Don't delay I think it will be gone from theatres very soon and who knows if a tv network will have the b*alls to pick it up. His portrayal of Roy Cohn looks Amazing in the promos.
I didn’t like Kendall but every time when he’s in distress the emotions pulls me in and I cry every time he cries that’s how powerful Jeremy’s acting is
Jeremy Strong is a breath of fresh air in this world of monotony, i'd love to see him more...He's true to himself..something others can only imagine to be..!!!
this was unreal, i know alot of time goes into making this but how come you arent uploading more? u could easily and deservedly get millions of subs. this was so fun to watch
Thanks so much for your lovely comment - and glad you enjoyed! I'm aiming to be more consistent in 2024 - and hoping that the next video will be published in February. Hope you check it out!
I don't see one single thing about his process that is unlikeable. He's just trying to be as good at this job as possible. Many people can relate to that, i know i personally can.
Not going to lie… this video has me conflicted. On the one hand, thank you for compiling instances of Jeremy Strong’s moments of vulnerability, and piecing together his compelling story. On the other hand… this feels deeply personal, almost invasive. He’s revealed so much of himself through his craft, and to have a real story and drive to supplement that is intense. This comment isn’t meant to be criticism of you or Jeremy Strong.
Jeremy - please don't change for all the naysayers . I miss Succession - in great part due to your extraordinary performance throughout. Ryan- thank you for putting together this video. Great job!
Kendall Roy is one of the great TV performances of all time. I just hope Jeremy is able to find peace and happiness in his own life outside of acting. We don't need him pulling a Heath Ledger on us.
Idk if it's intended but I see a lot of Dodford influence, but unlike his, this is intercut with more of your own voice, which I prefer. Great visuals. It's abundantly clear you've got extensive background in editing/storytelling.
Thanks for your kind feedback, I really appreciate it. I've definitely been inspired by Dodford's use of Midjourney to create visuals where there'd otherwise be no compelling picture. Will def check out your work too - amazing numbers btw on your recent Anna Kendrick deep dive. I'm a journalist by trade and slowly dipping my toes into UA-cam - would love to publish more consistently - which'll be the challenge for 2024! Again, thanks for your lovely comment.

Succession quickly became in one of my favorite tv shows, one of the main reasons, besides the script was the magnificent performance of Jeremy. Great job with this video! Regards from Peru.
Thanks for watching!
I would’ve thought you had over 100,000 subs the way this video is so well made! Love it keep up the great work 😊
How kind! Thanks so much for watching and hey - hopefully one day!
Thanks for watching!
I love when we call actors genius like they read the script better than anyone else
He is my favourite part about the show. His performance is sublime. Wonderful actor and very underrated in Hollywood’s zeitgeist.
This video really deserves more views. Great work.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment - really appreciate it!
Great video and an amazing actor. So cool to see Jeremy Strong unpacked! The Unpacked episode I never knew we needed. Loved it
Thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed!
HIs performance in The Gentleman is super underrated
Agreed - thought he was brilliant in the limited scenes he featured. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
I couldn't believe this is the same guy that played Matthew in The Gentlemen. Everything about him is so different.
He's got an amazing range!
People dislike him because they don’t have it in themselves to be as committed to a craft as he is.
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
The guy absolutely crushed the roll. I loved his character so much.
Agreed - thanks for watching!
His performance in succession was absolutely mind blowing and I think about it a lot. Almost every day. He’s absolutely brilliant.
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
High high quality and a new subscriber, thank you man
Really appreciate it - thanks for subscribing!
Great video! Jeremy comes off as so genuine and hard working it's so admirable and inspiring
Thanks for watching!
It's fairly the best video on Jeremy Strong I've seen! The depth of thoughts and the overall quality of the production amazes! I wish your channel to grow really big so more people could enjoy your work! Stay true to yourself, Ryan, always. Your videos stand out!
Thank you so much for the kind comment - really appreciate it! Hope to have another video coming in Feb!
People who overuse the word "pretentious" always come off as a red flag to me. More often than not, it's said as a result of a repressed inferiority complex or intellectual insecurity
Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful exploration, man! This was so inspiring. Subbed and congrats on hitting your 1k goal!
Thanks so much for your lovely comment, and for subbing, really appreciate it!
"I think you can't, as an actor, short change what these people went through."
Unbelievable. Respect
He's great, right?! Thanks for watching!
I love how he treats his roles like they're people and not just an "act" he's putting on.
I can't believe you don't even have 500 subscribers, your content is so good
Thanks for watching - really appreciate your kind comment!
Can't wait to see what you post next!
Thanks for watching - watch this space!
Holy fuck, being clowned for a word dramturgically speaks volumes about USA, not gonna lie.
Thanks for watching!
actors who put this much into a character are the best kind of actors and the only type of actors that i consider actual artists
Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching!
A lot of people struggle to make sense of someone who takes their work (or life) seriously. It’s a kind of challenge to them.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for watching - your comment really means a lot. Glad you enjoyed and to have you on board!
Jeremy Strong is an entertainer. Why not just say thank you. He really puts himself out there for you.
Thanks for watching! Excited to see what he works on next.
I can't believe you don't have more subs, dude - your stuff slaps!! wow
Thanks for watching!
This man rules and he clearly keeps learning through all forms of art to inspire him. This man is a success and should be celebrated for his work and his work ethic
Agreed - thanks for watching!
Who's seen The Apprentice Film? I'm so excited I'm going tomorrow. Don't delay I think it will be gone from theatres very soon and who knows if a tv network will have the b*alls to pick it up. His portrayal of Roy Cohn looks Amazing in the promos.
Thanks for watching!
Dude is absolutely brilliant. One of the best actors ever. He is not pretentious, he is a fucking genius.
Thanks for watching!
I didn’t like Kendall but every time when he’s in distress the emotions pulls me in and I cry every time he cries that’s how powerful Jeremy’s acting is
Thanks for watching!
whatever it takes to produce a performance that moving is fine by my book
Thanks for watching!
He is one of the best actors, EVER. Hate the critics.
Thanks for watching!
Jeremy Strong is a breath of fresh air in this world of monotony, i'd love to see him more...He's true to himself..something others can only imagine to be..!!!
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
Ah, I love finding a quality sub1k channel. Makes me feel like an old timey prospector.
Godspeed friend
Thanks so much for your kind comment.
this was unreal, i know alot of time goes into making this but how come you arent uploading more? u could easily and deservedly get millions of subs. this was so fun to watch
Thanks so much for your lovely comment - and glad you enjoyed!
I'm aiming to be more consistent in 2024 - and hoping that the next video will be published in February. Hope you check it out!
Incredibly well done video! I am mind blown :) Jeremy Strong might be one of the most underrated actors of our time. I love him.
Thank you so much for the kind comment - really appreciate it! Agreed - look forward to seeing what he does next.
I don't see one single thing about his process that is unlikeable. He's just trying to be as good at this job as possible. Many people can relate to that, i know i personally can.
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
That’s an interesting perspective - thanks for watching!
He just seems like a very authentic, thoughtful person
Agreed! Look forward to seeing more of his performances - thanks for watching!
He’s a phenomenal actor.
Thanks for watching!
Jeremy - please don't change for all the naysayers . I miss Succession - in great part due to your extraordinary performance throughout. Ryan- thank you for putting together this video. Great job!
Loved it, good job!
Thanks for watching - really appreciate it!
Kendall Roy is one of the great TV performances of all time.
I just hope Jeremy is able to find peace and happiness in his own life outside of acting. We don't need him pulling a Heath Ledger on us.
Agree - it'll be difficult for anyone to top Kendall Roy! Thanks for watching!
Saw this had 3k views and it blew my mind. Great vid sir, have a sub.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing - glad to have you on board!
As someone who's acted I definitely think you could use this to process your own feelings of rejection and isolation we all feel somewhat in our lives
@@ryanramgobin that's awesome! Hopefully we see that given how good this one is. You've got a new sub here. Excited for future content/progression.
Loved the video so much! Keep producing such great work man ❤
Thanks for your kind comment - really appreciate it!
This is a really well produced video. Keep it up brother. You’re heading to a good place!
Hi Joe - thanks for your kind comment - really appreciate it!
I love him. Brilliant actor. He stole the show in The Big Short. Amazing in Succession as well
Loved him in the Big Short. Re-watched The Gentlemen too recently, and was brilliant in that too. And of course, Succession! Thanks for watching.
