With the tap if you go in a bit, then back out a bit, then in, then back it up, and rinse and repeat it'll work better. Going backwards releases the cuttings from the threads and frees it up. Not sure if you already knew that.
Yep that’s how I did it. Kept getting bound up near the top for some reason.

I just keep it in a cabinet in my garage. Most of the time it keeps well unless it freezes
