One of my favourite moments in the book World War Z (the book, not that monstrosity of a film) is when they narrate how Cuba is essentially the zombie free haven because it’s cut off from the world and they also have so much ability to repatch and repair what they have rather than throw it away.
it's all good and games untill they realize they can't grow crops
I agree. Similar story in the book about NK.

Those retro old cars look really awesome, shame that other countries didn't salvage more of them! The older cars were built simpler and therefore had less to go wrong with them. It also makes them way more repairable and serviceable - no having to plug a computer into your car to find out what is wrong with it.
Also means they are far less efficient.

Awesome video man, and great that you could share this experience with your father! Amazing how resourceful humans can be when they're forced to. Really highlights how terrible our "everything is disposable" mindset is over here in the West.
In Serbia in 90s we had total UN sanctions..like totaly nothing was allow to be imported (only way was smuggling ) ..so like whole 90s i was stuck with what we bought in 80s..so like whole 90s i used computer Amiga my parents bought me in 1989 ..similar with VCR ..i kind off learn my self how to repair it..TVs was also off course from what we bought in late 80s,we had a car from 1987,i had a stereo system line off course also from 80s..and lot off other stuff..like i entered year 2000 with 80s stuff ..but good thing is that then stuff were build to last or repair was easy..all repairs i did my self
Except for how great it is to have such a luxury. I can't fathom having everything controlled by the government and not having the power to change it. The ability to dispose of things and change things how I like is part of why I love western culture. It might be harmful but at the end of the day I would rather live a non resourceful life and have it cut short than a long life of struggling to get by.
Part of this is because I grew up poor so now that I can afford to dispose of stuff I am much more happier.
@@likeablecloud2454 the unfortunate problem here is responsibility. Dispose so much into the environment will only meaning you're contributing to landfill cities. The problem is the whole status symbol society is too mentally numb on this issue. You can live happily, but not when climate change consequences will one day hit back.
Coming from the US, where parts are readily available domestically... I've always complained how everything has to be imported, whenever I need parts here in the Philippines.
After watching this video, this made me realize that I'm still lucky that I can import parts. Whereas Cuba has no choice, but to use what's available to them.
Yeah, btw hows it like importing stuff into Philippines? taxes 'n' stuff

Vox had made a documentary on piracy in Cuba which exists because of their lack of internet penetration. It's wild how much they even make use of the resources they have. Nevertheless, this was an amazing video Hugh.
Im from brazil and piracy here is basically unrestricted. It was much more present in the ps2 era though, with pirated copies of games every corner. Streaming services made piracy somehow obsolete.

it is simultaneously really enraging and insanely cool that there is a place where old tech *has* to live on, if its 5 years or 50 years old.
its harder to get in a car than a cellphone, but i'd love to see all eras of cars and other machines be preserved continuously.
I'm from Cuba, Very amazing video dude!! Love this new style of content, seriously amazing
I went to Cuba back in late 2018. Harder to travel there as an American but I did it. Very, *very* interesting place.
Simple things such as taking a taxi are an experience. I was taxied in a 50s car, then later a junk car of similar age that had a hole on the floor, you could see the road!
To be fair, Hugh had a 27 hour trip with 4 flights. You can literally take a ferry from Miami to Cuba or an hour and a half flight.
I went in 2019, what was interesting to me is that the cars are all vintage but you can see that they've got different transmissions etc, because cars that originally had column shifts have shifters in different places (wherever they fit best), the cars all look great from 20-30 feet away but when you get closer you can see they have so many miles they will never be show vehicles again. I hope to see the day when we stop punishing the Cuban people with a brutal and cruel embargo for no reason.

Deny other countries? Read the embargo! Only the US isn;t doing business with Cuba, no other country is denied to trade. There are no US destroyers sinking cargo ships coming to cuba. Aren't you an socialist hypocrite, saying that a socialist country isn;t surviving because it can't trade with a capitlalist country? How come Russia, China, Iran, nicaragua, North Korea, Vietnam or Venezuela dosen't trade enough with Cuba to make it work? Because socialism dosen't work. Never worked.
And yet i am the brainwashed.
You're a moron! Go live like i lived in socialist Romania for at least a year and then we'll talk. You can find the "lite" version of that period in Caracas.
Imagine what Cubans who repair stuff could do if the embargoes were lifted and they had access to better parts and tools.
They do have the necessary tools even under sanctions. Cuba is not wholly cut off from the rest of the world. Spain, Netherlands, and Canada still do trade with Cuba. And tourism also
As a Cuban citizen might accept Embargo affect but just the gouvernement business, if we are so back in the time is due our Comunist gouvernement dont want to improve the private business as well; Embargo has made to seek and affect Militar and gouvernement business who are the ones control EVERYTHING.

YOU DIDN'T LIKE CUBAN FOOD?!?!?!?!? Man, I'd love to visit Cuba just for the food. Cuba is definitely on my bucket list, not for the food, since one can find good Cuban food outside of Cuba, but more for how it has been kind of frozen in time and there are lots of good people there from what I hear. Cool video Hugh.
If you want good Cuban food, as a Cuban, go to Miami. They know how to make good food but don't have the ingredients to do so in Cuba.
@@Teku175 Agreed, as the quality of the ingredients you have can make, or break a dish.
There isn't really a way to eat authentic Cuban food in Cuba, due to a lack of excess food that allows for restaurants to sustain business. I was bummed when I went to Cuba myself and found out that restaurants aren't a thing.
@@JakeobE Thanks for that, very interesting. That does make complete sense. Now you've made me really curious of what its actually like to find good food there.
Exactly.
However there are some medical conditions (especially in young men) which means that high legume, high spice diets are not tolerated. So, not a matter of taste (which WE LOVE), but a matter of one's physiology and health.

It's so cool and wonderful to see the classic pre 1960s cars in Cuba still running. It's like being transported back in time. The Cubans are very innovative and rescourceful.
I feel for them, especially having lived through a rough
If Cubans in Cuba could own a new Honda or Toyota, they absolutely would. However, it’s actually impossible for them to not because of the embargo, but because of the socialist state.
My dad still uses a very small Nokia phone with dual sim he bought in India over 10 years ago along with his smartphone because it's easy to use and light weight. Last time he was in India the Nokia's mic failed and I thought- well that's it, but he did got it fixed in a shop.

This was a very interesting video. I’ve long found it interesting how Cuba exists with the sanctions imposed upon it. I really like this mini documentary and hope to see more.
Imagine how Cuba will be when that finally drop the sanctions. With this people abilities and resourcefulness they will be one of the best country’s in regards to technology
Is that likely to happen?
The US will just keep putting on sanctions so it can starve the people of Cuba and then blame communism for Cuba starving. Hope the Cuban people survive, unlucky they had the bad fortune to be neighbours to one of the worst countries in human existence.
Probably why it won't ever happen
You don't understand. It's not sanctions that are to blame but communists and their evil ways. When Cubans free themselves from communis they won't have to live like this.

Wish I could just donate my old phones and electronics to Cuba.
Same I have several good motorola Android phones I could wipe, and send over from the US if there was an easy way to get them to the country, as I feel the average person is not at fault for what is happening, but a corrupt government in Cuba that won't give up their old ways so the people can have a better life.
@Krauses They can import stuff, just not from the US and other countries that imposed embargo on them. Cuba's main trading partners are Venezuela, China, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and the Netherlands, but their authoritarian government is keeping the populace in poverty.
@@giovannifoulmouth7205 Wait, you think the Cuban government is keeping the people in poverty, not the US embargo??
@@giovannifoulmouth7205How does the "cuban government keep people in poverty"?
Did they self impose sanctions like the British? Do they erect barriers to professional careers like medicine?
What are the actions of this horrible government that keep people in poverty? Having the wrong allies?
Also, they can't just import stuff from neutral countries. US tarrifs have this nasty overreach, where because the PTO hands out patents for anything (valid or not, and even things patented by other people in other countries), America claims enforcement on these IPs. A Canadian can't sell his canadian made flashlight to cuba because the PTO issued a patent on LED light bulbs. This means the canadian is exporting "American Technology" and thus committing a US Federal crime. And because the US has a network of extradition countries, that puts you at risk of kidnap despite never morally having done anything wrong.
So tell me, which one is the real authoritarian?
@@rogerp566 It is not a theory, the Cuban government is the one that keeps the people in misery. They use the American embargo as an excuse. The hospitals are falling apart while the politicians build luxury hotels. All very convenient.
I wouldn't mind going to Cuba myself one day.
We go to Sri Lanka fairly regularly as my wife comes from there.
They have a similar attitude to things. Although it's different in the south of the island, it's far more different in the North, where my wife comes from.
It has been improving in Jaffna over the years, they still have cars from the 50s and 60s.

Love the old cars and had no idea about the embargo, so it's so good to see them work with what they have and just keep things going. Thanks Hugh
Be aware that one of the last policies Trump ever signed was to declare Cuba a “terrorist state”. In effect, the policy makes it so if you have an ESTA-accepted (automatic visa entry to USA) passport, you no longer qualify for ESTA if they find out you’ve ever visited Cuba. You’ll have to manually apply for a US visa which costs more money and time. Hopefully Biden gets around to revoking this.
It's the communism that keep these people poor. Dont be an stupid guy or girl
Never cross my mind that Hugh will be traveling to Cuba, the place where I was born. Currently living in US I can compare both countries and economies very well. True in cuba you repair anything, but you have plenty of “time”to do it. As he point out cubans have a lot of “patience”…due to they dont have more options available. Is option A or A. I remember back in 2017 we had to get one of the local Taxis, a 1950s Chevrolet that was missing its rear door handles so they could only be opened from the outside. One of the most fun cars I’ve been in over the year. Had as big of a smile on my face as when I was in a 2019 Porsche 911. I also had a few conversations with taxi drivers, one had an old Pontiac. Awesome vlog......would love to see more of these vlogs style videos occasionally.✌✌✌
AWESOME video and great idea for a series, I HOPE? 😁👍🏽
i love to learn ever bit of their repair culture, if its fixable, dont buy a new one
❤️ much love for the cubans
So what's the deal with the food in Cuba?
Bro I repaired my broken myself and have to say I am so happy it works
Great thing that you show it all for us
At least they embrace repairability. Shame many countries like USA never follow suit...
Capitalism
@@Pearloryx it's not really all about capitalism and communism and all that political stuff. It's mostly just how repair culture is treated across all nations. Hell, even the Taliban knows repairability.
@@rosaria8384 it’s ALL ABOUT capitalism. New disposables are equals to profit. In a society not focused on profit and money accumulation there’s no reason for create a thing that will last just until the next one. There’s no reason to hold on new technology just to sell the current one first until is profitable.
@@TecnoNerd lol NPC
@@rosaria8384 It literally is about capitalism and communism though. The repair culture showcased in this video is a direct result of US embargos and sanctions which stem from cold war aggression by the US against Cuba
Always amazing content Hugh! Cuba is one of my favourite countries because it preserves history and culture. Keep up the amazing videos!
It doesn’t do it as a virtue it does it because communism has stunted cuba.
I used to schooled there and been visited almost every province, it was amazing experience and peoples are lovely
I love my country, but I think it’s absurd that we still have an embargo on that country from a bygone era. I would love to visit that place one day.
I do hope sanctions will continue to leave Cuba. The more they're interacting with the world, the more it will change. Obstinately keeping the sanctions has done more to harm ordinary people, not the government they're intended to do something to.
sanctions must stay. Down with socialsim!!!! Castro enslaved the entire population.
