  • In episode 02 of the Aberdeenshire Coastal trail, we'll take you along the coast from Findlater Castle to Portsoy and back, then explore the mysterious castle ruins atop a cliff. The original castle dates back to the 13th century, and although it has been rebuilt and fortified, then fallen to ruins over the centuries, you can still imagine how it felt to live there as you gaze out of the massive stone windows. This is truly a gem on the Aberdeenshire coastal trail, but not for the faint of heart! Explore with caution.

If you're new here, welcome to my channel. I live in Scotland and this channel documents my adventures and life as an artist in the Highlands. My life goal is to hike around all of Scotland (and islands) with my sketchbook and cameras, a project I'm calling Sketching Scotland. I'm doing it in stages, as time allows (I'm busy!). There will be day hikes as well as longer multi-day camping trips (in the warmer months). So there's plenty of variety here. Most importantly I'm making an effort to learn about the history and important features of each area I visit. I love sharing what I learn with you all. Thanks for being here!

Wonderful, thank you! You can see why, after colonisation, Tasmania was overwhelmingly settled by Scots, where they found a familiar craggy and wild landscape, although, as they would find out, much harsher and the soils more marginal. They brought with them gorse and thistles, which out of context, have become noxious weeds with which we do battle constantly, but also brought amazing stone masonry and golf :)).

Sarah, thank you for this series. Inspired by YOU we (my husband and I) have just returned from a week in Lossiemouth, visiting that beautiful coastline. Your ears must have been burning, as we kept talking about you and thinking how helpful this has been to make the most of our time here. We live on the south coast of England and have visited Scotland a few times now and no doubt will be back for more, under your helpful tour hints!.
I have also done some of your skillshare classes which were a great prep for sketching and painting the coast. Just cant get enough of you!. We managed to get Findlater Castle in sunshine, but with added mist over the fields behind. Heavenly - as was the pancakes at Harbour lights. 😋

Nice. We were there a few weeks ago. You can totally explore deep into the castle. The lower rooms were storage and the only living area visible now was the top room, now just a wall really. Nice site. The walls are either slate or, in the more plush areas above, marble (which I found unusual for Scottish castles). The top room has a nice garderobe (loo) visible too. Love the art! It takes several thousands of years for the land to erode cliffs like this, if not hundreds/millions. You'll see lots of examples of castles build on cliff edges in Scotland because it's strategic to avoid being sieged and giving the best line of sight
