If I’m being completely honest, I tried DS2 at the start of the year and gave up fighting the Lost Bastille’s boss and put down the game all together. But your playthrough actually inspire me to pick up the game again and as of writing this, I’ve beaten every boss in the main game and one of the DLCs, and are currently halfway through one of the others. So honestly, your personality and approach to the game has been so amazing that it’s allowed me to overcome a pretty easy boss in retrospect and explore the rest of the game. And I must say, you’re in for an absolute treat with the rest of DS2 and especially the amazing DLCs this game has

The AOE of the rotten reminds of you Nito‘s AOE from Dark Souls 1. That is because all of the 4 old ones inherited a piece of the Lord Souls and Souls of the DS 1 Bosses. The one of the rotten is from Nito. The other 3 have theirs from Seath, the Witch of Izalith/Bed of Chaos and Gwyn, although some speculate its the 4 kings. But it doesn’t really matter since they are shards of the same lord Souls, together with Seaths, as no of the old ones holds the Dark Soul.

The black swirly thing on your shoulder is the Darksign. In DS1 it was on your chest.
If you notice it, the Rotten is controlled by the fused guy on his shoulder. There's a theory that this guy is Pharros.
The item in the chest you burned was just a divine blessing, so no biggy.
Black Gulch has several secrets near the cliff on your right hand side. You might want to check them out. One will really suprise you.
Lighting all brazziers in the Gutter causes an invasion that has a nice drop if you are doing a magic build run.
That knight sitting in the Gutter is an enemy. Feel free to wack him for his loot.

Great episode! I love the gutsy move of going armorless + greatsword against the boss. Would be awesome if you upgraded that sword a bit. Also, I think armor in DSII can be worth exploring and upgrading, like have a set vs. poison, another vs. fire, etc. If you compare each defensive stat of your armor you'll find which is good vs. what type of damage. Can make a huge difference. Looking forward to next episode!

First and foremost I am very glad that you replayed the gutter in its intended way. (Oh hail the gravity 😂😂)
The black gulch however, I need to adress one major point: You managed to defeat the Rotten quickly and I was very happy that you made it till there. However I can say and I think the others may have mentioned that too, that you only finished 70% of the area and in comparison to the Gutter, you absolutely need to finish the whole black gulch. Whether you do it now or at a later point is up to you. I am just hinting towards that so that you keep it in the back of your mind 😉.
But anyway, as always it was a very fun and entertaining video which made me laugh a lot 😂😂 keep it up as always

7:31 It's kinda hard to see, but mimics have a padlock, but hitting a chest once works too.
21:25 That's the set of the Darkwraith Knight in Ruins of New Londo in DS1.
39:50 You won't believe it, but that is the only type of arrow that does not break statues, any other can. Wooden arrows and bolts also can not interact with some buttons.
41:38 There two types of messages, one that 'at risk' means it will break soon so you can swap it to not spend souls for repairs, and one that 'broken' well... . Also yellow color in this game usually means it breaks stuff, be it gas, water, explosions, and whatnot.
45:52 Congratulations, you found your first invisible enemy. There were a couple before, but it's usually hard to see them without a torch. They drop some useful consumables, but hunting for them is more like a tusk of being observant.
I think there is a brazier up the leader at 21:48. And I am not sure if you lighted the one in the circle, because you have edited it in video.

Fire dmg including torch can ignite oil and fire barrels.
Fire arrows can be used to farm those Tar monsters(who are also weak to fire). They can drop Titanite Chunks.
Igniting all Braziers in the Gutter and things Betwix(starting zone).Summons an NPC.
Dark Stalkers in No Man's Warf are afraid of the fire so the area can be made safer.
Some pirates throw oil at you so your torch can explode and you take damage.
Spiders are afraid of torches too. Very useful.
Few areas have small secrets in regard to lighting braziers.
The game has a few invisible hollows in fixed spots they drop fixed loot. (they do not respawn).
The torch can allow you to see their shadows.
Usually, the torch increases lock-on distance, especially in dark areas.
In some cases increases enemy aggro distance.
For a certain Covenant, you are required to light up the covenant map.

Lol what a choice to go to black gulch first out of anywhere else and you should look into upgrading the ultra greatsword too.
Btw using a torch and rolling over the oil pools or by using flame arrows lights it on fire, explore black gulch a bit more using a torch and look over the edge of the cliff at different spots, there will be a few surprises

    @dwellerofbasements9159 День тому

I'm not sure you'll read this comment, but i hope you do.
First i have to say, you're currently one of the best playthroughs of DS2 on youtube, since you actually seem to be giving the game an honest chance and enjoying it, aswell as trying to pay attention to your surroundings and all that. Starting to use the torches for example is a good example of that. Torches are useful in certain situations, some enemies are scared of the fire and will be easier to deal with if you're holding a torch, so its nice to try it here and there, even when an area is not pitch black like the gutter.
Now, what i actually want to say is the following, and i hope this isnt coming off as backseat-y, because it isnt the intention.
The problem people have with dark souls 2 is that they play it like an action game. If you go in expecting a game of reflexes and reactions, with a focus on fast-paced combat, then you'll be sorely disappointed. In fact, that is the whole point behind some of the changes in the game when compared to DS1: You have less stamina in this game, from beggining to end, to make you pay attention to stamina consumption even more and limit the amount of actions you can take. You also get punished hard by rolling twice in a row, with the second roll taking 50% more stamina consumption than the first. You can have negative stamina( as in, you were barely out of stamina and decided to either attack, roll, or block, and now you're all depleted of stamina and will have to wait more than usual for it to start regenerating).
Then there's the slow healing animation, especially for Estus, and the ADP stat. I dont like the adp stat, but what the developers are saying by putting that stat there is the following: dont rely on I-Frames, atleast not in the beggining of the game. It's forcing you to deal with the game without depending too much on rolls, so you can learn to play it the way its actually intended.
And what is that way? You've kinda figured it out already, but DS2 is more about spacing than it's actually about reflexes. The game is slower in general, both for your character and for the enemies you fight, they have very telegraphed attacked 80% of the time, and that is done on purpose. If you play it carefully and strategically, you dont need to roll for 90% of attacks in this game. See an attack coming? just walk(not even run, just walk) backwards a little, or to the side, and you'll dodge the attack. Then, if you attack afterwards, more often than not your attacks with stagger the enemies. So, really, its all about getting that first attack in, and the battle is over, because then you can just spam attack and probably kill the enemy(doesnt apply to everything ofc, but it applies to most regular enemies).
The less you roll, the less you use stamina, the more you're playing the game right. Some people might think this is a boring playstyle, since its more strategic and less reactive, but for better or worse, thats how DS2 was designed from the ground up to be played. That is what causes most frictions for players of DS1 and especially DS3 when coming to ds2: its a slower game that will punish you hard if you dont play the game the way it wants to be played. This applies doubly so if you try to run past enemies: never do that in this game, the aggro range is insane for enemies to follow you, as you've already seen, and fog gates dont give you I-frames. If you die, it will only cause more frustration if you try to run past enemies, because they will gank up on you.
Back to the combat: its pretty simple to fight 1v1 in this game, which is also why it has more ''ganks''. DS2 loves to throw you agaisnt 2 or 3 enemies at once, sometimes with a ranged dude far away aswell. This is to teach you another lesson regarding spacing: your spacing in the game matters more than rolling, and you'll get the most out of it when you turn off the lock-on. Lock-on in DS2 is a huge trap and not worth it most of the time. Without lock-on, you'll have more freedom of movement, and its easier to deal with gank fights agaisnt 2 or more enemies, because you can position yourself more easily behind them, or to their side, and depending on your weapon, you can attack both at once and stagger them.
In regards to weapons, DS2 gives you a lot more reinforcement materials. That, plus the fact that weapons have weak durability, is to encourage the player to use more weapons, maybe keep 2 types of weapons in the inventory at all times. It's good to have long-reach weapons, so diversify your playstyle with weapons, maybe try slower weapons with high damage, plus a faster one, and switch it up when you feel like you need it.
If you start to feel like the game is becoming too easy or boring, ditching the shield in favour of 2-handing or using 2 different weapons is an option. The shield is great in these games, but it also makes the player too passive sometimes, so i can see why some would think its boring.
And i think thats mostly it. DS2 is more about the exploration and atmosphere, it encourages a more tactical, slower-paced playthrough. I love going through the gutter with a torch, because it really makes me feel like i'm just a random dude with a torch, slowly uncovering this pitch-black hellhole. There's alot of verticality in that area aswell and plenty of secrets to find, as you've seen.
Cheers and i hope you continue to enjoy the game.

@52:45 You can break the statues with a shield parry, or even with a torch if you want to preserve your sword durability. Also, the statues you break will stay broken if you rest at a bonfire. They will be restored though, if you reload the area by fast-travel, using a homeward bone, or dying.

  • @coupdata7

With the power of the torch, Mr. Wuggs is unstoppable!
It's been a while, but here's some Miscellaneous aid:
    - 1:39:51 petrified something is pleasant to touch. Some might consider it smooth. Silky, even.
    - You can summon multiple NPCs simultaneously! It will increase the health pool of enemies, but in the dark souls games, diverting aggro can reduce the difficulty by a lot! DS2 has many areas, including the black gulch, that are made much more fun in co-op. Summoning NPCs is a great way to go through these places!
    - You can dismiss a summon with the black separation crystal in your inventory. If you want to hit a bonfire/solo a boss, say thank you to your NPC and send them home!
    - weapons break quickly in this game, so it's usually a good idea to have a backup weapon you can switch to on the fly.
    - this is less a tip and more a practice that I follow that can be helpful, but when you're in Majula and levelling up, use your remaining souls to restock your life gems! Estus heals you a lot in a short time, so it's often better to use while in combat, and you can heal between encounters using life gems!

I have been looking EVERYWHERE for that Dark Armor I've got the helmet, gauntlets, and the leggings not to mention I'm in NG++ never googled it and decided I'd hunt for it at a later date. I've scoured so many areas and thanks to you I now know where to get it within minutes of watching, thank you Wuggs 😭🙏🏻
Here's a useful tip for Mimics: throw a Lloyd's Talisman at a chest you believe to be a Mimic. Doing this puts the Mimic to sleep allowing you to steal whatever item they have without having to fight them, and if you still wanna fight them you can get a few clean hits off while it's asleep then it'll go back into its camouflage and you can get 1 more hit in before needing to back away from it. This tip stays true perhaps with even greater potency in DS3.
Also there's more in Black Gulch if you're game to go back and explore. Those messages by the cliff going "here!" they weren't trolls. There legitimately is 2 separate points near both of the Gulch's bonfires that you can drop down to for very useful secrets, and just know one of them will look like a dead end but just turn right and look extra carefully. Dope episode as always though! I hope you have a good rest of your week Wuggs 😁

Man, the Black Gulch had it out for you. Don't worry; it's pretty much common consensus that the Gulch is the worst area in the game. I usually just sprint through and stomach the poison during The Rotten fight.
Speaking of, pretty impressive you took him down so quickly. Seems you're already a natural with the greatsword.
As people have said before me, there is a secret or two hidden in the Gulch. Instead, I'll tell something a little more face-value: Those squids in the oil pits have a chance to drop Titanite Chunks. If you're willing to spend some time farming to get yourself up to 6 chunks, those plus that slab you got in the Forest of Fallen Giants can get your greatsword fully maxed out early. Turn that bonk into a real BONK.
So next up is the Copse. It should feel like a holiday after the Gulch. Best of luck for next episode, Wuggs.
And don't you dare go hollow.

Another great episode and so glad you backtracked. DS2 areas need proper exploration *cough* Black Gulch * cough*. Also very well played against The Rotten solo, hope you do most bosses like that since they aren't that challenging. If you want to progress npc story line there is an item to re-do boss battles but an ng+ variant and summon then.
Have a good one, and waiting for the next episode.

In Dark Souls II weapons have something called 'Counter Strength'. That is how much counter-attack damage the weapon will do. A counter attack is when you interrupt an enemies attack with your own attack. If an enemy is in the middle of it's attack animation and you hit him, it counts as a counter-attack. Normally 'Counter Strength' is at 100 for 100% damage, or no difference than a regular attack. But some weapons will have a higher Counter Strength. For example the Bandit Knife has a Counter Strength of 130 for 130 percent damage, or a 30% bonus over regular damage.

I always say it like BRAY-ziers, rhymes with Frasier.
Also, everything breaks much faster in this game, but resting at bonfires/reloading/dying resets durability for anything that isn't broken. So having to go repair is basically a penalty for not switching out when it's at risk.

Let out a belly laugh several times this episode 😂 Great content, super happy that you revisited the gutter tbh! Not that it would have mattered terribly if you didn’t, but in a way I think it is surprisingly one of the more fun areas to explore!
For my second run of DS2, which I did exclusively in preparation for this playthrough, my strat for black gulch was to basically hard sprint through the entire thing, zone was done in 5 minutes . It is probably the only zone in the entire franchise where I don’t want to meticulously go through everything, although watching you do it kind of makes me want to go back 😂 I literally never discovered that second bonfire though, what a game changer…
Also wuggs, you know how to make it stressful to watch you, when you had 10k souls just lying on the ground getting completely ignored from 1:18:00 to 1:21:50😂 Also I have to ask, how come you never picked up the item right next to it (where the first worm comes out of the whole)??
The decision to go fight the area boss with a broken sword, no flask and running low on lifegems -> die-> unequip all armor and take your time entering the portal, getting beat up by the invader-> delayed reaction to losing 17k souls - this was all peak comedy 😂
By the way, the messages on your way to Huntsman Copse are very insightful😶 you should definitely read them all, starting from the bottom🥹🫶🏻

OMG!!!! Watching the beginning I thought that I was watching a horror movie and then I realized that you're at Blighttown 2🤣🤣🤣 The mimics face is always fun lol DS2 has a different way to check if a chest is a mimic... Try to see if it's breathing.... Oh it's SO BIG😅 You can light all the black pools using fire arrows from far away so it will burn all the monsters inside. Yes, on DS2 the fog gate doesn't give you s like DS1. If you upgrade your ADP to 35 you'll get the max s. Pleeeaaaassseeeee go back to the Black Gulch as there are important things to find: two important NPCs, a really hidden area (look closely at the edges), use a bonfire ascetic on the last bonfire and fight the Rotten again, you'll have a GREAT surprise.... Souls!!!! Give me souls!!!!! 😉

IIRC what happens when you light them all isn't the most vital thing, so if you don't feel like going back I don't think it'll be a big deal.

Nice, gj for making it through the Gutter and Black Gulch so early. I think the Rotten is usually the third Great Soul, if you follow the "intended" path, but obviously Dark Souls 2 is also quite free with its progression. Also glad that you enjoyed the Gutter with some light, it is not the best area in my opinon, but with Light it is way better. :) In fact, the Gutter also had a really great concept which was scrapped, if you finished DS2, I will show you a video about it, but currently it would contain Spoilers.
    A few things:
    1. I hope it is ok to say, but you walked by an NPC on your way to Huntsmans Copse. :) Basically right before the Bonfire.
    2. The Item in the Chest which burned was just a Divine Blessing, not much was lost.
    3. The Gutter is actually a place where things get thrown away. Things or humans. This is what you saw in the Pillars right at the start, a lot of rubbish and human bodies.
    4. The Petrified Something can be traded with the nest in The Things Betwixt. It is the only use for this Item.
    5. You did indeed not find all sconces in The Gutter, otherwise something would have happend. BUT I also dont know where you might have missed one 😅
    6. The NPC which invaded you the second time in the Black Gulch was a different one than the one before. The first one was Woodland Child Victor, the second one was Woodland Child Gully (and to be honest, I saw something new, I did not know that there is a second invader, haha)
    7. The Heide Knights which are scattered around the Map are no friends, even if they dont attack you. You can attack them. You can basically compare them to Black Knights in DS1, they are quite tough and they will drop some stuff :) So in theory, the one in the Gutter is fine to kill, you are not killing an NPC here.
    8. There is still something to explose in the Black Gulch :)

Ok so since you’ve already completed the area boss I won’t consider this a spoiler, but Lucatiel actually makes an appearance in Black Gulch and you’re supposed to summon her for Rotten since he’s one of the four great bosses. You still have two other chances to progress her questline though. Typically there are summonable minor npcs (like Schmidt) for areas that are designed to help you progress through enemies and such, but you don’t need to worry about them dying as they don’t have questlines. It is only the npcs that make physical appearances in areas that you need to summon and keep safe for the area boss.
