- Edinburgh Christmas markets are photogenic, sparkly, a good place to face your ferris wheel fears, and also a bit overwhelming, let's not lie to ourselves.
This is why I've compiled a list of alternatives to Edinburgh Christmas Market's most popular food stops: from sausages and burgers to churros and crepes, this video will give you options for a quiet sit down in one of Edinburgh's many independent eateries and cafes!
Let me know if you think these foodie choices are better or worse than what the Christmas Markets have to offer!

These all look like great suggestions, regardless of the time of year. Brie & cranberry is one of my favorites.
What a wonderful time to be in your beautiful city!
Indeed! It’s so nice to have so much to do and see when days get this short. Wish it could go on until March 🥲
That cozy adorable smiley face @3:10 - priceless 😊
If I have the chance to visit there I’d go for these cozy cafes and restaurants than over-crowded markets because I’d be wearing earmuffs outside and that’s difficult to communicate with whomever I’m going there with haha😂
Makes you want to leave everything and come to experience the festive season :)
We don't do mulled wine enough in Southern California. Everything looks so wonderful!
Great tips there, thank you! We found the main Christmas market whey too busy to be very enjoyable over the weekend. After finally getting in with the long queues, we only lasted for one drink and left.
I am most definitely a Christmas market hater so thank you for such a great video.
Thank you Kakibot!
You’re very welcome!!
the coziness is overwhelming in this one- such a holiday vibe!! always dreaming of Edinburgh Christmas!
Suddenly I want a meringue hat
All the food looks so good!! Thanks for finding us alternatives! I want to enjoy the market, but my biggest goal is to explore Edinburgh!
Hopefully these spots will come in handy when you’re exploring! .)
Thanks for all the recommendations!
Another wonderful video that highlights the reality that there is so much everyday wonderfulness to be discovered in Edinburgh. Once again I am reminded that when next back in the city (hopefully 2024) I must not only look up but also look sideways at all those wee shops and eateries I pass without giving a glance.
BTW, great video production. Despite starting out at a notably high standard, you have come a long way.
Amazing video as always! love your content, keep it up!
I’m still dreaming about the Room and Rumours cinnamon rolls 😍
I never actually tried one because the donuts always distract me! But they look soooo goooood
We had some decedant stuff this time :) Where else would you all recommend to avoid the crowds this Christmas?
Thank you for the recommendations. Yesterday, on Sunday, I tried to enter the Christmas market, but there was a massive queue. I decided to skip the long queue, so I didn't go in. Although I was a bit sad because I really wanted to get the chocolate-filled fritters. By the way, I need to find out where the dark red wool coat is from.
❤❤❤❤😊
Going this january for the very first time in edimburgh, will these attractions and markets still be working?
The markets are around until the 6th of January, and after that the month gets pretty quiet. Many small businesses take couple weeks off to take a breather after such a full on season. It might be nice to be around Burns Night though, that’s a pretty unique Scottish experience- especially if you find a place that does dinner and poetry!
Hi! This might be a stupid question, but I hope someone can answer it for me. I'm from Barcelona, so weather here is pretty mild on winter (except for a few days), I'm traveling to Edinburgh next week and I'm considering bringing a ski jacket, besides many layers. Woul dit be too much? I know I'll be warm and dry since it'll protect from the rain, but I've never been to Edinburgh besides during summer and I was just wondering! Thank you!
Not a stupid question at all! Some of my friends do wear winter sports jackets throughout the winter so it's probably not a weird thing to pack. It's tempting to wear nice coats but on a windy, spitty day it's much better to have something that can withstand the elements.
Looking at the forecast it seems like it's gonna be pretty mild this coming week though, a lighter weatherproof jacket over some layers might be more comfortable?
Never mind an alternative to Christmas markets, how about an alternative to Christmas? Bah humbug.
Jason stop! .D
