Why iPhones Still Don't Have USB-C

- With the release of iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, many expected Apple to drop the ten-year-old lightning port in favor of USB-C. But that didn’t happen. And with the European Commission requiring all smartphones to adopt USB-C by 2024, its made the iPhone’s transition away from lighting appear inevitable. So why is Apple taking so long to do it? Well, their official answer is for user convenience.

Thank you. The mystery of why there are no Lightning connectors at dollar stores has now been solved. Can't sell something for a dollar if Apple is going to take two right off the top.
Maybe in your dollar stores. They sell lightning cables at Dollarama stores in Canada for 2 bucks.
That only applies to products certified by Apple. You can still sell lightining outside of the Made For iPhone program, I don’t think dollar stores care for certification.
@@alflemon2783 yes but non certified accessories trigger iOS and it shows a warning message that the accessory might not be compatible and often the cables don't work at all
Wait, why dollar stores doesn’t sell lightning connectors? Our dollar stores sells them since forever.
Yeah but dollar stores make such crappy stuff, those small prices are reasonable.
Most people already have a USB-C charger. Apple could just include a USB-C to USB-C cable, instead of USB-C to Lightning. Then it won't be an issue.
Uhh, yeah that isnt that simple. Lightning (a lot of them at least) to USB-C is USB 2.0 (4 wires), switching the female port on the device is basically a complete redesign of not only the device, but the entire IO board, circuits, and ICs.
USB-C is too loose when it comes to chargers especially. I would say that is a prime reason Apple is not for this arbitrary law.
What would be actually fair to say is, Apple your connector is getting old, please either improve it by redesigning it or switch to a USB-C Equivalent.
Forcing them to used a sloppy connector like USB-C only is too much. I say sloppy because USB 3.1, 3.2, ThunderBolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4 all use the USB-C type connector and thats a lot of logic you have to deal with for just charging a phone and using digital headphones.
Nothing against you, a lot of that IT friction, but ultimately forcing them to switch is going to make headaches for everyone of at the least make iPhones even more expensive and 100% more vulnerable to the 202X “chip shortages” problem no one seems to be able to sort out.
@@keith_5584Most ipad users love their type c cables
@@ZaHandle Thats an iPad not a Phone. Way more room for the extra ICs, different operating system, and it was always designed to have I/O. An example is try and pair a Bluetooth Mouse to an iPhone. Usually no cursor, but on the iPad you get a cursor. It is the same with a wired mouse because the iPad is essentially a computer running a streamlined operating system.
I am all for hooking stuff up to devices, but when it comes to waterproofing a phone that has limited real-estate, it is harder than just swapping a connector out like the EU seems to think. There is a whole buffet of specific chips, firmware, and software needed so things dont blow up when you plug your Thunderbolt device running at 20 volts into your phone because it fits.
I don’t own a single USB-C cable. And I have a lot of USB devices.
@Keith _ The lightning port is strictly a way to apple to keep getting money. That's why they wait so long. Also I'm pretty sure it's only the EU that's enforcing this change. It's possible they'll do something similar like when they removed the sim card tray on the 14 this year but only for America. I can't imagine Apple giving up completely on a quick way to make more and more money. Likely to just be an EU thing. Although it's a good opportunity for Apple to see if people appreciate USB C more than lightning on their iPhone. If so, they can spread it to the rest of their phones released in the future to all countries it's sold in. I would personally switch to iPhone if they had a USBC port instead of lightning. Also with what you said about making a lightning port equivalent..that would literally be useless since they're are being forced to make this change to their phones. Unless all phones in the near future get some more upgraded ports and chargers that's better than USBC. In my own opinion, USBC is far better than 80% of the current things out there. It's fast, good for moving data. It's smaller, and it's capable of utilizing very high wattage blocks to charge phones faster. USBC is a popular choice already for a lot of things, and like Samuel said, most people have one already.

Apple: we want to care about the environment…
Also Apple: buy extra cables, adaptors, and dongles to make your devices work correctly
Absolutely mind boggling
Stop sending mixed messages. Either you care about the environment and want to stop e-waste or you don’t.
It's probably made by different people. I'm fairly sure most engineers there want a USB-C iPhone, but for the shareholders, switching isn't in their best interests. They only care about their environment as long as it makes them money.
They care about money and that's it. Apple saying they care about the environment is a big joke
Try saying that to FireWire and thunderbolt 1 and 2 dongles. Plus if you get one USB-C dongle, you can use them for any other device.
Besides we all buy dongles anyway to add extra, cuz you probably got a lightning dongle to have an HDMI out, rather than spend money on an Apple TV for proper high res display outs. And that thing will most likely last a long time anyway, so why not.
Plus thunderbolt is great when you have a monitor that supports them. But you’ll complain because it’s not USB-A, since no mouse uses USB-C for such a simple connection.
@balkanduck yeah but android makers made fun of Apple for not including chargers…. Then did it themselves. Plus what contributes to e-waste more?? Having 10 of the same charger and cable that you won’t ever use. Like…. If you have one reliable charger with multiple ports that lasts long, then that’s better than 10 that will wear out quickly.
1:01 that’s because Apple tends to make transitions like that without mass user input

It’s not only for that but lighting cables/ ports accessories have to identical to the original cable to be sure that there’s not any damage on the iPhone with those accessories (Mfi program). So if the iPhone switches to USB-C many people will start to use any USB-C cable so a risk for Apple to encounter a lot of iPhone damage just because of the port

@@marshallm3208 Apple acquired the company that came up with it before they included it in the original iPhone. It’s nothing to do with copyright.
It’s just not practical anymore. People use streaming more than ever or have such large libraries that it’s not just scrolling through 1,000 songs / 100 albums. People just don’t interact with their music the same way anymore and cover flow doesn’t make sense today even if it looked nice or could be stuffed in for the sake of including it.

That MFI thing sucks, tried getting my wife a lightening to headphone jack adaptor once the jack was erased, because she liked her old earbuds (and does not like EarPods), but because it wasn’t an MFI “USB device” it keep cutting the audio every 5 minutes, which was ridiculous! She’d have to unplug it and go again for another 5 minutes. Eventually it broke, and we found decent lightening earbuds, though she switched to wireless headphones eventually (she still has the old earbuds for her iMac.)
Wouldn’t that be because they didn’t opt into the quality control that MFi requires?
Well said on both points. I hope that there will also be USB-A to USB-C connectors for those of us who still have working power banks with the older USB-A connector to plug into the battery pack. Then again, going portless would be a great way for Apple to get around having to comply. Either way, I don't care as long as everyone is taken care of as not everyone has Air-Pods and there are those of us who own working power banks from before 2020.
there already are like a billion USB-A to USB-C cables already out there
OOR they'll do that apple moment and go entirely portless
It’s probably (and hopefully) cheaper for them to copy the circuit from the ipad than to go portless
still good to know all iphone 15 leaks has usb-c (probably usb 2.0 speed)
That wont happen
There are like a billion USB A to C cables - easiest thing in the world to buy one. There’s no need for an ‘adaptor’.

I do agree that it is a financial decision instead of a user convenience thing. I am disappointed that they did not switch this year as an iPhone 14 Pro user/buyer myself.
The bigger the company the bigger the greed. The fact that Apple don't even include a charging plug with their phones is absolutely unacceptable luckily I don't use any of their products.

As an iPhone user, I personally couldn’t care less which port it has. I only carry my phone with me so doesn’t matter which charger I bring along
In case you're wondering why the iPad 10 has a USB-C port but still requires the Lightning-based Apple Pencil 1, my theory is that as part of Apple's transition to USB-C, they made the iPad 10 this way so they still have a chance to get rid of all their Apple Pencil 1s before switching completely to Apple Pencil 2, which they're planning to have the iPad 11 support. My Dad recently lost his iPad Mini (a vintage model, but still) so unless it turns up, I will let him have my iPad Air 3 and he and Mom will buy me an iPad 10. Having to attach an adaptor to my Apple Pencil 1 may be cumbersome but at least I won't have to buy a whole new Apple Pencil until I get whatever iPad I get after that! (I hope we get a 1TB iPad Air or even Mini before the end of the decade! I was gonna buy next year's 11 inch 1TB iPad Pro but with this year's one being as expensive as it is, I'm not sure I will be able to afford next year's one!)
I got this year’s M2 11 inch IPad Pro for free from Chase XD.
Yeah but, get the lightning to USB-C little dongle thing, cuz the lightning to lightning one for some reason only supports charging.
Which is some dumb over-sight, due to usb-c not coming out till 2015 when the pencil was made with lightning in mind.
I never needed to wonder about the reason cuz I knew it was -greedy- *environment friendly* Apple we were talking about, so ppl clearly know what else could be the reason~
Good point there. But I guess lacking of USB 3.2 messes up on data transfers nowadays (except you are reliant on airdrops) but if you have windows and an iPhone, oh great….

0:03 Nope. No one expected them to drop lighting this one. There were absolutely zero reports indicating this, and the rumours have always been iPhone 15 having USB C
The average person has been expecting/wanting them to switch for years now. Especially with the EU putting more and more pressure on them.

@@maxonite Irrelevant. That doesn’t mean there were rumours Apple were moving to usb c on the iPhone 14 just because people wanted it. People have been wanting it for years now but that doesn’t mean reliable rumours will happen because it’s wanted
I've also heard theories that Apple plans to remove the charging port from phones entirely, opting to make Mag Safe the charging standard for iPhones moving foward. Idk if that's true or not, but it would explain why Apple is so hesitant to switch to a USB C port if they don't plan to have a port at all in the next few years anyway. I'm guessing this would also be a loophole to get around the whole USB C charging standard, as I guess the law states "all phones with a charging port"...if it doesn't have a charging port, then it's exempt from this rule I'm assuming.
What is that also violate EU regulations.
Because it was EU regulations that forced them to adopt USB C in the first place
@@REAL-UNKNOWN-SHINOBI I don't know what does or doesn't violate anything, all I know is everyone has been spreading the rumor that Apple is ditching the charging port entirely just like they did with the headphone jack. If they actually are doing this, then they must've found some loophole that allows them to do so. That or the rumors are all false.
@@nervousgreg I made that comment using text to speech so I should have changed it from 'what is that also violate' instead what I should have said was 'wouldn't that also violate'. I'm guessing it would because the requiring the whole USB C thing but it's a gray area. They didn't say that they couldn't use wireless charging as primary.
@@REAL-UNKNOWN-SHINOBI That's prob why the rumor is floating around, Apple knows they would lose a lot of money on USB C charger sales because pretty much everyone offers a USB C charging solution, so instead of people buying from Apple they would just get a third party or use one of the dozens of chargers they already have. That's a lot of potential sales Apple would lose since USB C isn't proprietary like Lightning, nor do they have a deal with third parties to take a cut on USB C sales.
With Mag Safe however, they can have their cake and eat it too. It would be proprietary so it would be profit on every sale of Mag Safe technology, and it would be wireless charging, which the law doesn't say they can't use. What I'm not 100 percent sure of is, I don't know if the law says they HAVE to have a charging port of some sort, and that would of course be USB C. But I'm pretty sure the way it is worded, it says anything with a charging port needs to use USB C. So eliminating the port from the equation would be their way of skipping around it.
@Not an internet troll You're probably right, I think the rumors shine a light on what kind of reputation Apple has set for themselves. Some people can't accept the idea that Apple probably WILL switch to USB C because they're determined to believe Apple will set practicality to the side in favor of money. I feel like that's the foundation of the rumor to begin with, the idea that Apple doesn't care about the user or the user experience, but rather how they can make the most profit. Cause as it stands right now, MagSafe doesn't provide any sort of benefit or have any feature (at least not now) that could cannibalize wired charging. The only benefit would be for Apple, not the user.
People are so used to being treated that way by Apple, with examples like the headphone jack being removed in favor of AirPods, that they're predicting the same thing with their charging solution. I think that goes to show that people have started losing faith in Apple to do the right thing. And I can't really blame people for the skepticism and jumping to conclusions.

Well that could the reason that cables in the market specially with lightning connector are more expensive than Type C cables.
Ahhh, yes the reasonable decision to not use the most used connector well played
I don’t mind the lightning connector. I just hate the usb 2.0 speed.
They should make it an option and if they do the should include a small adapter inside the box but they would probably charge an extra 50 for it since it is more material and a different production line
I’m just imagining this situation: EarPods with lightning end to a lightning to auxiliary dongle to a auxiliary dongle to usb c

I've been visiting your channel lately.
From my heart, thank you for trying to be impartial on these topics.
Just like the removal of the headphone jack, they'll probably include an adapter from the new USB-C port they will have to use in 2024 to the lightning cables old iPhone owners already have. It'll be interesting to see how this goes about since there is no room for such an adapter to fit in their new iPhone boxes.
They kind of already have something like that. A USB-C (male) to Lightning is available most places for pretty cheap. Apple even sells a USB-C Charger and USB-C cable to Lightning (which is a fast charger). That is why this switch seems so sily. That isnt a recent thing either, it has been around for at least a year.
Obviously that isnt exactly the same as having a USB-C (female) port on the device, but nothing will change on the iPhone except make it worse, and more expensive because of all the redesigning required when not much is going to change. You arent going to be able to hook up a flashdrive and play roms on your iPhone just because it has a USB-C port.
If the EU wants to make this better, they should get rid of all the USB-C chargers that are dangerous and can kill your device.
They literally include a cable in the box and already sell USB-C to USB-C cable. They do not need a stupid dongle for usb-c to lightning so people can use cables they already have WHEN IPHONES STILL INCLUDE ONE.
Everyone will send their older cables to a proper recycling facility anyway when usb-c iPhones are out.
@@keith_5584 replacing lightning with USB-C isn’t just for whatever “roms” you mentioned. Having that port will mean stuff ON the device, like photos and videos will be easier to transfer to any device.
And don’t use the “but air drop” excuse, cuz that thing sucks for big files, since the device auto sleeps cuz it that takes priority over transferring stuff, and airdrop doesn’t work when the device is asleep.
