We always wanted a cheaper entry into the RED ecosystem. We morphed the Komodo into something that it wasn't meant to be and then RED responded with what we wanted all along. Great perspective!

No, no. RED pushed the price down on the Komodo to bring people into the RED system. It was always meant to be the entry level RED. Go find the promotional videos and material that called the Komodo a crash cam.
I was able to get a used Komodo package for a good price about 6 months ago exactly thanks to the release of X.
Can't deny I'd love to upgrade to X, since improved framerates and contunuing FW updates alone are IMO worth the added cost.
I wouldn't probably upgrade though, because not only will I loose some money selling OG (hard to find a buyer for such camera in my market), I'll still need to additionally invest in media, mutiny battery IO (integrated V mount plate doesn't solve the need to power focus motor, wireless transmitter etc.) which will approx amount to another $6000 of investment required.
Yeah, I totally get it. I’d love to upgrade to the X as well, but it really doesn’t make financial sense at the moment and the OG Komodo still is a beast of a camera!
@@MortyFilms I'm in a dilemma... I've been wanting to buy the Komodo (OG) for a while because I rented it for a music video and absolutely loved using it!
Currently, I have an FX3 and an FX6, and I'm considering selling my FX6 to get the Komodo.
It's not that I dislike the FX6-far from it! It's fantastic for documentary projects or when I need to work quickly. However, I am much more drawn to the image quality of the Komodo. For me, the image quality is almost more important than practicality.
For example, I used to have a Blackmagic Pocket 6k Pro. Despite its inconvenience (strange body design and rapidly draining batteries), it inspired me to film every time! Unfortunately, I don't get that feeling with my Sony cameras. Although I'm more productive with my Sonys, they just don't inspire me as much...
Additionally, the Komodo offers significant flexibility in post-production with RED Raw. This is a huge advantage for music videos and corporate projects with bigger budgets.
However, the lack of slow-motion options is a bit of a drawback... When I saw the announcement of the Komodo X, I immediately thought, "Ohhh, finally the perfect camera for me!" But it's more than twice the price of an OG Komodo (especially if I buy a used one), and that really hurts!

@@MortyFilms I just want to throw out there that I’d love to have a KX ($9,995 new) but you’d have to really think if having it would be better than having an FX6 (5,998) and FX3 ($3,898) for just a hair cheaper. Going the Sony route would give you a 2 camera setup for documentaries, filmmaking, and commercials.
For example, the movie The Creator was shot over 90% to my understanding on the FX3 showing what it’s capable of. I watched it and was blown away that’s what they used. There’s a video on UA-cam shot on FX6 called The Africas. It’s breathtaking as well showing what is possible.
Again, the KX looks incredible but having an FX3 and FX6 for roughly the same price should get people thinking “why would I spend the same money on 1 camera when I can have 2 solid cameras for about $100 cheaper?”

Hab mir auch überlegt die Komodo-X zusätzlich zur V-Raptor als B-Cam und Gimbal-Cam zu holen. Scheint mir eine wirklich passende Ergänzung zu sein😀

@@MortyFilmsJa, das denke ich auch. Besonders mit dem Bildschirm und Zubehör. Fühlt sich dann genauso an. Nur etwas dichter mit etwas weniger Spielraum für Reframing😊
Still loving my OG komodo. Perhaps I don’t mind as with my power grades in DaVinci resolve. I am using raw and colouring to taste using a single cam, the shift is not relevant beyond hitting-1 in printerlights. Also as you know, correctly exposing using traffic lights and lighting/diffusing scenes erases the vast majority of dynamic range thought issues unless the cams are used in unpredictable run and gun documentaries etc. I’m sure that people who shoot a lot of sports or dream sequences will really love the KX as it does look like a great option.
I had one of the first komodo's and it pushed magenta a bit in the beta firmware
Yep, as I said I used a VND on the shots so the greenish tint might be influenced by that a bit, but I used the same filter with the same strength and camera settings and it got very obvious that the Komodo X just has a way more refined image. I mean it makes sense, it was just crazy for me how different it actually is.

Can you focus with the camera screen? before you could only using the app but it seemed to me that you used the camera touchscreen for setting the focus point?
To my knowledge you could always do that on the original Komodo. At least I could do it for as long as I had mine.

Der Unterschied ist lediglich dass der Anschluss dafür an der Komodo X sehr viel besser zu erreichen ist. Mir gehen an der Originalen Komodo andauernd Kabel kaputt weil ich sie immer an und ab fummeln muss, Ich glaube da hat man es bei der X sehr viel leichter :)

@@cruisechill1813 I usually set it to 35mm and that’s about it. Sometimes when I want it a bit more sudle I set it to 65mm but now that they have added these presets I really don’t tweak it too much honestly
@@MortyFilms have you tried Filmbox? I find it ever better! It's expensive but worth every pennys ;-) You can try it for free (only 2k exports and limited options)
I don't know why. But for somehow I actually prefer original Komodo. It was more mini.
I mean I’ll keep using my OG Komodo as I don’t have 10k to spend right now, even if I sold it, but I was actually surprised how much I liked the form factor of the X, but it’s probably because I’m using a V-mount plate on my Komodo anyway.

nah, I still love my OG, had great times already with it, long before the X was a thing. Also it still is quite a bit cheaper than the X.
