Jennie Goutet is such a great author. As a British fan, I appreciate that she’s one of the few who has done proper research, to ensure accuracy. Stevie Zimmerman is the best narrator by far! Thank you!
Stevie Zimerman is a superb voice artist. Her wide range of voices and accents elevated a good story to excellence. Thank you Jenny Goutet for your generosity in sharing this book.
As I am laying here miserable and sick and desperate for something new to listen too your beautiful book pops up on my feed and suddenly I feel like I can withstand another day of illness. Thank you
I appreciate that your writings prove that "clean" stories are every bit as interesting and enjoyable without the questionable or graphically based filler. Thanks for the consideration.
I could not stop listening. I carried it around with me while I did my chores. Thank you so much. It is as if you lived in that time period, the details seemed so authentic.❤
Excellent narration Stevie. It is the voice that first draws the listener. And Jennie Goutet, it is the well written words that keeps the listener engaged. Thank you. To date this is by far the BEST book in this genre. I can’t go back to the trivia of balls and gowns. This book could be a biography, maybe that is what I will explore next. You make a fine pair. Thank you.
You might like A Daring Proposal for the Battle of Waterloo - it's more serious than most of my books (and close to my heart). It's still a romance (and it's the third in the Memorable Proposal series). And if you've not yet read Philippa Holds Court that has a slightly deeper tone with what Jack is attempting in Parliament (amidst the balls and gowns). :-) It's the second in the Clavering Chronicles series.
It's 1.30am I couldn't stop listening to this, so I will be short of sleep just now ! A wonderful story, thanks for this. Can't get enough of Stevie. WCL
That was extremely enjoyable, all the characters were really well rounded with a villain that no one could possibly like, well two villains if we count the nurse, Stevie was on great form as usual & brought all the characters too vivid life. Many, many thanks xx
An amazing audiobook! ❤ I was enthralled with this story from beginning to the very end! Thank you another fabulous story and for your fantastic narrator! ❤😊
Jennie Thank you for sharing your books, I have really enjoyed them. As a busy mom that doesn't get the luxury of reading, your audiobooks have been a great joy.
I liked Trudy very much, and Trudy's relationship with her brother Theo. I was steeling myself not to enjoy her since I often go quite within myself when around extremely organized take-charge types, yet she was also noticing, considerate and unfailingly polite to her excellent brother and I adored that dynamic between them.
Absolutely loved this story ❤️ it is my favorite of all three books in this series. Thank you Jenny for writing this lovely series. I look forward to more like this from you. Hugs from South Africa 💐🦋🌟
Thank you Jennie for the intricate detail in this story. Thank you for the ‘trigger’ warning around the psychopathic control employed by Arabellas brother-in-law. It was accurate to the game playing and gaslighting in these relationships. It is not a pleasant topic but I believe more people need to understand how these kind of people gain and keep control. My favourite scene was Rose stepping forward to give information to the ladies. She deserved to be head maid for her loyalty. I felt great satisfaction seeing her fire Nurse Billings. Hooray for Mort, the best bodyguard ever.
Thank you. Yes, unfortunately I have friends who have suffered from this so I do think it's important to bring up. But I don't want it to cause anyone angst either, thus the trigger warning.
What great writing, fantastic plot. I really didn't see how it was going to end happily. What a villain. Thank you so very much for gifting us with these audio tales on this site.
Unless I'm wrong, my understanding is that she's only 19-20, which would explain why he keeps her under his thumb and regards her as a child, although that would be very annoying. Sure glad i did not live in those times bc I never had the mommy urge, never had kids, too independent to marry, probably would have been shoved to the fringes of society. Likely would move to the New World to make my own way
Most women married that young. But he kept her under his thumb because he was a jerk. But yes, life would not have been easy for any strong-minded woman in those days.
I really enjoyed this, it was quite a suspense to wait and see how things would turn around as her situation seemed hopeless. I loved the sisterhood. Will Christine get her own book?
Thank you for writing Arabella's story along with her love! I was downcast at different times that things would not turn out the way they should...thank you for the suspense! Do you have a story for George? The brother of Catherine. (I think those are the names)
Had an opportunity to finish the story today. I loved it 🥰 thank you very much for and exciting, as well as lovely book. Looking forward to the next. I appreciated the change from dukes and earls to mill owners and merchants. It’s good to have a different perspective.
In Great Britain, marriages between a woman and her husband's brother were forbidden from 1560 to 1907. So the brother-in law could not make such a proposal to the heroine.
It happened but the marriage could be easily voided so it was a risk for those attempting it. A man who had some power of wealth and persuasion could find a way. www.regencyresearcher.com/pages/marriage.html Marriages could be annulled if a man or woman married within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity or affinity. These marriages weren’t illegal altogether but could be easily voided. A clergyman had the privilege of refusing to conduct the ceremony in which a man was marrying his deceased wife’s sister or a widow her husband’s brother.
Ms Goutet, I do believe you should be aware that it was against the law for a Brother In Law to marry his brothers widow. That law did not change until the middle of the 1900s like 1960s.
Rachel Knowles from Regency History .net clarifies this better than I could. During the Regency period, the marriage between a widower and his wife’s sister, or between a widow and her husband’s brother, was valid but voidable. It was forbidden under ecclesiastical law but not illegal until the passing of the Marriage Act in 1835. It could be voided or annulled if successfully challenged by any interested party, at any time during the marriage, provided both husband and wife were still alive.
The brother in law knows this, he even acknowledges that its a marriage that could be challenged in court. But he does say something like who's to tell the authorities if you keep quiet... I think it was a strange law, makes no sense to me. What God Permits how can man prohibit?
IM UST ADMIT THAT I STARTED LISTENING TO THIS BOOK AND WAS SO IRRITATED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER- SHE CAME ACCROSS AS SUCH A SPINELES MILKSOP BUT AS THE BOOK PROGRESSED I CHANGED MY MIND AND AT THE MOMENT IT SOUNDS AS IF IT IS GOING TO GET A BIT MORE INTERESTING AND I AM ENJOYING IT, I HOPE IT IS THE START OF SOMETHING GOOD....SUPPOSE I SHOULD KEEP IN MIND THAT PEOPLE ESPECIALLY WOMAN'S ATTITUDE WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THEN BUT I CAN NOT GET OVER JUST HOW SHE LETS OTHER PEOPLE BOSS HER AROUND
Be thankful for the era you live in. :-) She literally had no rights to her son. So any bid for independence she made would be to abandon her son. It was not an easy position to be in.
Yes, it was that bad. If she took her child and was caught, she would be thrown into prison and would likely die there. (No due process). So her choice was take the abuse and stay by her child or abandon her child and save herself.@@michelleduplooymalherbe2837

You are judging from a "liberated, empowered" 21st century female, very, very different from male and female attitudes of 200 years ago. Although bullies and domestic violence, male on female, is a sad, prevalent fact of society today too.
I've listened to most of your books. One thing that bothers me about this wonderful narrator is her pronunciation of "irrevocable" and "phaeton". ("vock" ; "fee"). Otherwise, this narrator is a dream to listen to.

I'm sorry. I understand. This actually has a trigger warning because I know it can be too uncomfortable for some people in the time it takes to get to the happy ending (when the innocent are vindicated). I hope you will be able to enjoy my other books instead. :-)
Unfortunately, did not like this story, both hero and heroine were weaklings, especially the heroine, so naive and meek and a martyr. Honoria and Philip in the first book were so much better. Supporting characters brought much life to an otherwise bleak and depressing story. Stopped so many times but decided to persevere to the end per someone’s comment that it gets better. Writing is great, since it was able to evoke strong emotions, and will continue to read the other books.
