- We joined Bill for the first sail on the Wild Duck that took him 37 years to build. It was light winds on the south Coast, but that didn't matter, Bill was happy to have the sails up and you know what, there wasn't a dry eye on The Solent as he drifted by with not a care in the world. That’s it, old timer.Keep moving!
Nothing but love for Bill and this magnificent labor of love!!! Wow
I think you picked a great design. For a "yacht" this size it has a lot of class. I'm a professional boat builder and for my money, designs like this are where it's at.
The feeling of accomplishment must be huge...Well Done Sir!
I have started to watch these beautifully made videos all over again they are even better second time around .
You moved beyond dreaming and accomplished it. Congratulations.
Very inspiring! And what an amazing feeling when you feel such as “oh, yea, she’s going!” on it’s starting!
After 37 yrs, the big Day. Bill states "Now I should take sailing lessons."
Just kidding!! Well done. Beautiful boat and a huge accomplishment!
Fantastic. After 37 years I can understand an understated rush to sail her!
Saludos desde Urugauy!! hermoso disfútelo🙏👏👏👏🍻
God Bless you Bill! She's awesome!
Congratulations , I hope I have 37 years like you and a giant fulfilment of dreams
'Not too disappointed' - wonderful!
Never to old to accomplish your dreams.
WELL DONE...BEAUTIFUL YACHT..BILL PLEASE DO SAILING VIDEO..CAN'T WAIT
Beautiful boat! What a fine gentleman!!! Congratulations!!!
Great job! She sails quite well considering the light air...
Yes and the engine helps! Look at the slack sails - no way you’d be moving at 5 knots as in some of those shots. No doubt the video guys told him to turn on the motor. Good on him for finishing it but if motivation to “get on with it” is required you could not go past this video. He’s almost too old to manage the boat. A little sad really.
Good man.... I so hope he gets the time to enjoy it!
What a lovely man most unassuming fair sailing.
Absolutely beautiful!
The Wild Duck is a beauty!!!
Lovely boat bill! So good to see him out enjoying his long labours!
BLOODY BRILLIANT! First rate and Bristol fashion. Cheers mate, S/V Restless.
There you go, never give up. Beautiful boat, wonderful story. Name suggestion, Fini!
Both thumbs up to you, enjoy.
Well done Bill
I'm old too and also built a 48 footer sloop so know what you went thru. Mine was Cotten steel. Named "AGAPI"
beautiful boat making good progress on almost no wind. This IS as good as it gets!
Nice boat. Kudos to the builder, but I think the progress might have something to do with the engine.
Nice one Bill, well done .
This little boat was one of two similar designs drawn by Alan Buchanan for the “Yachting Monthly” magazine, back in the ‘50s. Her dimensions are LOD 19’, LWL 16’ 2”, beam 6’ 9” and draught 3’.
For such a small yacht she was reasonably heavy displacement at a little over 36 cwt.
Her close sister was the YM 3 tonner (TM not displacement) which was a round bilge design. Buchanan is said to have created Wild Duck as being easier for amateur builders to undertake.
I remember poring over her lines in the YM as a lad of 10 or 11.
Well done Bill, catch you round the traps in Tahiti!!
wow she a cool looking sailboat .
Nice job, she a beauty!
well done mate
Nice lines!
Great to see the finished product......PS I noticed the sail number is not as allocated on the plans?
Great job, she sails very well indeed. The time it took is not a concern to me as just building her gave him something worthy of getting out of bed for and you could look at it as a hobby, there are a lot of people out there who prefer the build rather than the sailing.
Wonderful. A bit of breeze would have helped. Good for him.
I used to own a wild duck. "TARKA ".
Bit of a classic My Classic Boat that one...
Now that's more like it.
I Luv it. Bill's getting a real following. Thanks to everyone posting and sharing. He's worth it.
Love the boat. Why not rig it with a gaf rig?
Muito bom !! o amor a vela! seus sonhos em primeiro lugar.
A delightful follow up to the previous build story. Does anyone know how many of these made it to the water? Maybe some were also built wholly or with assistance from pro boat builders. Where are they now?
Deluk These guys have the plans and info on the Ducks. www.eventides.org.uk/wildpic.htm
Seja considerado o homem mas feliz da terra e o sonho de muitos inclusive o meu faser um barco do meu jeito e depois navegar muito bom
We love you comments but please keep them clean
If only you had some wind!
Filming on a day with zero wind?
We had no choice
Have you got a name on it Bill?
No!

Boat is great, music is unnecessary, the dog is just plain awful.
