    A nice yacht and well stated about the ownership of wooden boats. My wife and I are seventeen years into owning a 31 ft. Norwalk Islands Sharpie with lots of varnished mahogany. We just rebuilt the deck to hull joint with new teak. It now has a new rub and toe rail with stainless striker all sealed in West System Epoxy and painted with awlgrip. Slowly paint is winning the battle, but varnishing never ends. Yet somehow that gleaming shine leaves me smiling and contemplating life as the boat heels to the breeze headed for distant shores. Thanks and cheers.

    I was at the launch of Wooden Spoon. A family friend, Alec Clark-Kennedy, had commissioned her and insisted on a traditional design rather than the plastic boats that were being built in their thousands. He was a great character and well liked by all who knew him.

    The young haven't got the funds to purchase her for what she is worth and the older sailors haven't got the energy it takes to maintain a wooden classic. You almost have to give the boat to a young dreamer for the spirit of the thing to live on. Hopefully someone who doesn't stare at a phone all day long.

      Maybe teach them, too?

      @@petlahk4119 It's a love affair. These things capture your heart not because they are practical but because you see into the very soul of them like a classic car or cabin or boat. It speaks to you and there is nothing you can do. Like a woman you fall in love with. It's magical. Sailing is the same. You fall in love or you don't. At that point you can help or teach if they want to listen. I wish I was young again falling in love for the first time.

    Great video and lovely wooden boat, and the reasons most people steer clear of them...I've recently been looking at a Silver's ketch-rigged motor sailer from 1963. Just looking, mind...

    I LOVE the videos, but holy moly - that pup's first bark is shocking. :)

    That first bark is always a startle 🐶 a tiny bit lower audio level on that would work great for the headphone wearing audience 🎧

    The boat is worth what someone wants to pay for it, not what other Peter Ducks are going for. If it's special enough to someone who wants it, they'll pay what you're asking.

      You shouldn't give her away for what You think is Your price, You should give her away for what her next loving, respecting owner can afford (minus some change for the most urgent work to be done ...); she's a wooden princess after all, isn't she? So, she isn't for some money-paying anybody.

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, that's easy to say when it's not yours. But when you're paying a note on it and its drawing dock fees and insurance, a diver to clean the hull, continuing to need maintenance, you'll quickly start realizing your princess is an albatross.

      I used to be a pro boat builder for most my 38 active years, and I saw A LOT of recently well sailing, still perfectly salvageable/restorable boats wrecked by some heirs or cut down to firewood by boatyarders for bloody price-ideas which were nothing but perfectly unrealistic.
      Better give her away to a keen but pennyless lover than keeping up prices until You will be buried in her.

    I am curious as to where she got her name.... Please Google "The Wooden Spoon Society". Supposedly, originating from a Cambridge tradition of presenting a wooden spoon to the last place finisher, whether sports or academia, as a consolation prize. To date the Wooden Spoon Society has raised millions for charity and the wooden spoon is excepted with tongue and cheek by the losers of an event.

      P.S. I love the channel, especially the segments on gaffs. There is just something about a cutter rigged gaff that is beyond appealing to the eye.

    Its an act of blasphemy for a Brit to use a fine sailing vessel like that as a cursed motor boat-that bloke should have been flogged and then keel-hauled until he learns not to blaspheme the sweet westerlys that blow a Brit home after a long passage around the Cape and the Horn.Certain things in life are sacred!Would a man pluck the wings off a hummingbird?What is wrong with that bloke?!!!!
