Derek loves his RS3! I mean look at it... Who would`nt?
He bought this minter that was already Stage 2 tuned, however the stickers on the car from the previous tuner did`nt fill him with confidence. He also had some running issues in the form of what felt like misfires under load and weirdly when the cruise control was switched on.
He had previously took the car somewhere else which had strangely given it a clean bill of health, and even suggested fitting some uprated plugs. The `9` graded plugs made the car run even worse so he removed them and put the original oem`s back in.
Nick jumped into diagnosing the car and it was`nt too long before we had this sussed out. Derek gave us permission to investigate the current map as we were confident that this was a mix of hardware and software issues.
- The car WAS misfiring, which was down to the injectors, however the Misfire Detection routine in the ECU was disabled so the ECU could not identify and correct for this - Not cool and very much a software problem.
- The rough running during cruise was down to the previous tune having low load negative timing in the advance maps. Pops and bangs programmed very badly...
We let Derek know of this and suggested that we take the car back to stock and log the data to be able to pinpoint the exact issues. With the stock file loaded, as soon as the car misfired the ECU would jump into a misfire protection strategy - power would be cut, and the light would flash. It is crazy to think that on the previous tune the this would not be detected and that the engine would continue on. This WOULD lead to a very costly failure eventually.
We suggested our carbon clean and injector service package so that we could further diagnose the injectors, and its just as well as we identified 3 x failed injectors. He already had the Rev K injectors and the other 2 were in good condition so we fitted 3 Rev L and put it back together. Once it was firing on all 5, we strongly suggested that the previous tune be left in the bin which Derek agreed with and then asked if we could tune the car given that it had Stage 2 hardware fitted already.
For the DSG, we went with the tried and tested TVS Engineering Stage 2+ software, and this is something Derek had done his homework so knew of its quality. For the Stage2+ you get all of TVS`s propriety drivability and performance upgrades, as well as some customization of the shift points to suit the torque. This was done by Nick and the TVS callibrators. Even though it is TVS - this still aint no flash map.
Next up was calibrating the Bosch MED17.1.1 ECU - the heart of the RS3s motor. This was a fully custom and from the ground up solution, which took a bit of work to put together considering the age and hardware level of the car. The stock boost control tables were completely rejigged to suit the actuator, and we did a good mix of dyno wide open throttle tuning as well as on the road fine tuning. All done by Nick in house, with his name proudly stamped on it.
Derek likes a bit theatre in his RS3 - and rightly so when he`s out enjoying it, so we used the mapping of the exhaust valves, as well as some over run in Sport mode to give him just the right amount of BARK. When done properly this does`nt interfere with the low load cruise control as before.
What an animal this car ended up as! Just shy of 450BHP but with such a flat and broad torque curve means that it just pulls and pulls and pulls. It feels like a true RS car should, and the 5 pot is a glorious wailing banshee of drama!

Cheers. Yeah I've tuned some cars with Syvecs. Got a Mk6 GTI in with Syvecs currently, although admittedly this is a challenging car 😬

Well ive got a mk4 golf r32 which i've turbo'd and put a dsg box into running a syvecs s6+. All mapped by storm developments. I may want some bits doing at some point an thought i might give you a shout if you'd be interested? Cheers
