Gen X guy here. I grew up jamming to this genre of rock music. It was so fun. Even the sad songs sometimes made you happy because the music was just so good.
Soft rock describes bands like Toto Chicago or Fleetwood Mac. Whitesnake were blues rock up to the 1987 record and Hard Rock with some glam afterwards. But it’s only logical to come to that conclusion if you only have listened to Here i go again or Is this love
Check out “1985,” by Bowling For Soup. Whitesnake is not soft rock. They were a hair band. This song is a Power Ballad. Every 80’s hair band had at least one. Soft rock is Air Supply. 🤣🤣🤣
RIP Tawny. My first celebrity crush and the only woman ever to hang on my walls. There's a song "1985" by Bowling for Soup where they mention a line about a woman having dreams of someday dancing on Whitesnake's car. Great pop-culture lyrics in that song.
David Coverdale sure had a powerful singing voice. He had a long and illustrious career and owned the 80s hair rock decade with swinging “rhythm and rock” ballads such as this one. He had many hit songs. Cheers Britt 🍺
You made me smile when you talked about R 'n' B music because Whitesnake were termed to be Rhythm and Blues when they started out. They had a great pairing of guitarists Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden who were just phenomenal together. Back in the 80's I had the great fortune to get to see Micky do a lovely, intimate, solo session at a local rock club - just him sitting on a barstool with his guitar and an amp - proper musician doing musician things! I don't think I even had to pay over the normal cover charge to get in; he just did it because he wanted to play. He was one of the influences, along with David Gilmour and Tony Iommi on my own playing - but I never got to see if my playing would ever amount to anything as I was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident that came within a whisker of losing me my right arm and I have never been able to play well ever since (the timing is thrown off by the damage as I have to pivot from the elbow rather than the wrist). The last time I saw Whitesnake was when I won a competition for tickets from a radio show and it is a treasured memory of a wonderful night with my wife ... altho' she *so* wanted to take David home with us  I said that was fine as long as she found Tawny for me :D
She was In bachelor party with tom hanks and dated coverdale , when i went to there concert at castle farms in charlavoiox mich i could see her sitting in the back it was great , sad she has passed
Tawny Kitaen (1961-2021) starred in the horror cult classic film "Witchboard" and with Tom Hanks in "Bachelor Party" as well as several other movie roles, a soap opera, television appearances, and music videos for Ratt and Whitesnake. She was a very beautiful and talented but troubled lady. Rest in peace, Tawny.
After Deep Purple split up David Coverdale formed Whitesnake in 1978. Jon Lord keyboardist, and Ian Paice drummer from Deep Purple a bit later also joined David in Whitesnake. They were a Blues Based Rock Band as were most around that time. Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden joined as guitarists and Neil Murray on bass. There was some shuffling of band members throughout the years of the early lineup but Coverdale, Moody, and Marsden were consistently there through about 1984. David Coverdale and Bernie Marsden became writing partners on most of the songs throughout the early lineup. Then David decided to go after the American market which was the Heavy Metal/Glam Metal later referred to as Hair Metal or Hairband music. Most of what were to become Whitesnake’s biggest hits were re-recordings from the earlier lineup from 1978-1984, including “Here I Go Again”, and “Fool For Your Loving”. These were both Coverdale/Marsden songs. I personally prefer the earlier lineup and song versions. There are so many great songs from those early albums. “Don’t Break My Heart Again”, and one of my all time favorite songs is a beautiful song written by Coverdale that was on the 1980 album, Ready An’ Willing, “Blindman”. If you don’t ever do a reaction to it, please just listen and enjoy it. Another great song is from the 1979 album, Love Hunter, “Walking In the Shadow of the Blues”. “Blindman” An absolutely beautiful song! ua-cam.com/video/pF_gza3e49w/v-deo.htmlsi=9oXrRcLBZWoC59iD
At the beginning of the reaction, "power ballads" is the term you're looking for - when the hard rock / glam rock bands did a sentimental, slower song, it was considered a power ballad (that doesn't apply to this song, BTW). But "Is This Love" by the same band would apply. Most of the popular rock acts had at least one power ballad, and many of them were phenomenal songs! "Monster Ballads" was a collection sold via telemarketing in the late 90's that my friends and I bought, just to enjoy the great songs of some of the most popular acts of the late 80's and early 90's! You should have been alive then - you would have loved it. I can make recommendations if asked!
Here I go again might be my favourite rock song, the Chorus gives me such a feel good vibe every time I hear it and I can’t help but turn up the volume and sing along
So many of the great hair bands of the 80’s were made fun of for their hair and clothes. But as the years passed they all changed their tunes. Realizing how amazing these singers were and now they’re sorely missed and desperately needed today. The ballad rock of the 80’s were just on a different level and it to several decades later for people to see what it was and gave us. They were truly great musicians.
I have just recently found your channel. It has been great watching you enjoy all the music I knew growing up in the 70s and 80s. It also has made me miss my cassette collection that I had to leave behind when I moved to UK.
So many 80s bands filled their songs full of innuendo. Whitesnake were masters of this. “Slow and Easy” and “Slide It In” were amazing examples of this and great songs to boot. Dave and Tawny were dating at the time this video was made. I was so jealous of this man.
The 80s wasn't just a decade of music.....it was a feeling.....a way of life....that sculpted Gen X into the greatest generation that ever walked the earth.....we had it all....we made it all.....and we are proud to pass this energy on to you....we had the best....now make it better!! Make your futur what our past was for us!! Its up to you!!
I find myself saying that "You don't know how big this song was back in the day".....but then, I find myself saying that about A LOT of songs from the 80's & 90's!😂

Yes, Still of the Night was their epic song.. I have seen many of your reactions and have seen enough to know you will find an appreciation for the writing, don't want to say anymore and spoil it.. STRONGLY recommended for you
I'm glad you mentioned that it could be and R&B song. As someone else has already suggested, Is This Love is another great choice. Coverdale wrote it for Tina Turner to sing, but his record company wanted Whitesnake to record it.
You can get lost in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and some of the 90's genres of music, there's SO MUCH. There was an aura, mystique, a realness and grab to it. It was the vocals, the instruments, the presence, that is gone, hard to think there will ever be such. It was in your face and good. I'll continue to drift back because, and I don't care who says what, today's stuff ain't go it.
I was 4 yrs old when I saw this video and remember wondering why I couldn't get super model Tawny Kitaen out of my head. I was like "why is she better than chocolate ice cream?" ha

This song was huge in 1987 and cemented Whitesnake as my favorite band to this day! Ironically, there is a more R&B version of this song. They originally did it on a previous album (Saints and Sinners) and redid it to be more Rock for this album. In the R&B version he says hobo instead of drifter.
cool you did this one too. This my favorite of theirs. But You don't need the knowledge, just keep playing them and you'll get all the knowledge and enjoyment you need. You're doing a great job.
Fun Fact: The original lyrics of this song were "like a hobo i was born to walk alone". The song was a flop. They changed one little word to drifter and it was a hit. Great reaction!! 😊
Okay. You said Soft Rock, so let’s go there.. 😂.. If you want to hear some good 70s soft rock, check out “just when I needed you most” by Randy Vanwarmer and “sometimes when we touch by Dan Hill.
"Like a drifter I was born to walk alone". In the original version it was "like a hobo". Not sure if the change was for the benefit of an American audience or if he just felt it was an improvement in general. (This second version was recorded for the album that slayed the American market in 1987, enforced by videos featuring miss Tawny Kitaen ).
As always, a great reaction. Music of the "70's and 80's was the absolute best. Doesn't matter the genre rock, rap, r&b, blues, or country, just hands down the best.
It's okay Britt, it's been stuck in my head for over 40 yrs. David and the band did at least 2 different versions of this song, 1982 and 1987 (the one you just heard).
Some of us like ALL the sounds. Jazz, Classical, Rock, Easy Listening, Country, Heavy Metal, Acoustic, Folk, Acapella, Pop, Dance, Traditional, Electronica, etc. etc.
Whitesnake the band named after David Coverdale’s unit. This is a classic Hair Metal power ballad. This album Whitesnake 87 is like a greatest hits unto itself.
In 1983 I would cruise up & down I-Drive, in Orlando in my 1982 Z-28 Camaro. Blasting Whitesnake in the cassette deck. Yes, sometimes I blew out my car speakers.
You need to hear David Coverdale talk in an interview. He has a deep baritone voice and speaks with a very formal/posh British accent. Hard to believe after hearing his high notes when singing.
Tawny was imo the hottest thing to come out of the 80's. Lets just say she occupied a big space in my teenage brain. Drifter not twister. lol I believe the genre is hair-metal rock. It was very popular right up until grunge music happened. "More than Words" by Extreme had just hit and it was super popular. i loved it. Then "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana came out of nowhere (Seattle). I could not stand grunge music mainly because i hate change but more so that i could not understand the lyrics. I have since read the lyrics and still dont understand. I just felt bad for Extreme. They finally got a hit song and it was on top for about a week.
Fun fact David Coverdale (the singer) was actually married to Tawny Kitaen ( the model in the video’s) and she was an it girl for about 5 minutes in the mid 80’s with a lot of modeling work and bit parts in tv shows and movies, flash forward 10 years later she lost her mind on drugs and alcohol addiction and ended up in jail.
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out and this album was a major part of the soundtrack of those days. Thanks for bringing back all the great memories.
Coverdale is probably one of the greatest R&B singers of all time. The guy has been around for almost 50 years and has done a lot since he left Deep Purple in 1976.
If you like this, check out "Is this Love" or "Looking for Love" from the same record. (Whitesnake 1987). Is this Love was written by John Sykes and David Coverdale for Tina Turner, but it turned out so good they kept it.
Whitesnake band came up after the breakup of the band Deep Purple. The singer sang one of my favourate song, "Soldier of Fortune". You should hear it. Deep Purple broke up into, Whitesnake, Rainbow.
A side note about Tawny, if I remember hearing right they actually brought in Paula Abdul to come up with a dance routine for her but she actually blew them away with her own moves on the cars. I think she had a gymnastics background.
80's classic! The main song writer behind this amazing album is guitarist/singer/song writer John Sykes and his band Blue Murder has some amazing songs, start with The Valley Of The Kings and Jelly Roll!!!
Rock bands during the mid 80's had to record a rock ballad to get more radio play, video rotation on MTV, & to appeal more to a female audience, like you said to show the softer side
Tawny Kitaen the woman who is dancing on the cars was married to the lead singer of WHITE SNAKE but they got a divorce only after 2 years. This is the song that I told my ex-wife was my song of my life up til then. She cried like a baby when I told her that and when she told her mother it they both sat in the car and bawled like babies until I came out to go home after work. Great song. Love the song even though I am no longer with the woman.
As a teenager is right am blessed to have been that age when these songs dubbed "Metal Emotions" were hits. Best musical memories for the right age back then
The sexiest voice of 20th century.
Britt ? ...or Mr. Snake ?

Tawny Kitaen was responsible for so many restless nights. R.I.P.
You got that right. I was in high school mid to late 80s.
Oh yes, that was her name couldn’t remember it.
IDK She usually sent me into a deep relaxing sleep
And I'm pretty sure Coverdale didn't have a tough time finding female companionship! Always hated that guy😆
Who didn't want their very own Tawny hood ornament :)
80’s classic!!!! Tawny Kittaen was one of the biggest video vixens of the 80’s, she was with David Coverdale (Whitesnake lead singer) for a while
I was so jealous of her beautiful red hair and dimples! She was gorgeous!
David and Tawney were married at this time.
Whitesnake "STILL OF THE NIGHT" (original video) 🔥🔥🔥

"Still of the Night" is still the greatest rock song ever written and recorded.

I still love and listen to 80s big hair power ballads. There's nothing like em. 80s kid here
They was more than Huge, they where EVERYTHING. Still are...
When you stopped and said that soft rock is something you wanted to understand more about, I smiled big. I said, "Girl, you're in for a surprise!"

Whitesnake were/are a lot more than a hair band
Air supply was okay but I don't think the word rock ever came close to any part of that band.
Not a hair band, just the look they needed to pay the bills.

Whitesnake got their first recording contract by winning a Led Zeppelin sound-alike contest. Lyric is "like a drifter I was born to walk alone".
Original it was "like a hobo I was born to walk alone", on Saints And Sinners

I remember listening to this cruising 4th Street in Yuma Arizona in a convertible in 1987, warm desert night air, great music, fun times
I was waiting for the “twister” to be corrected later in the song and you did it!!😂 Great reaction!!!
Thank you!! 😁
I have, for ~38 years sung it as 'Twister' and just learned today it was drifter. I ain't changing. Twister is badass.
Give their song the Deeper the Love a listen with Steve Vai on guitar! One of the greatest guitarist, ever!
Thanks!
We were blessed to be young during this era.thank you.britt.
He’s saying, like a drifter.
Fun Fact: This song is Jesus' personal life anthem...
The 80s was chuck full of GREAT rock ballads by most of the hair bands of the day!
Like a "drifter" I was born to walk alone! 🥰🎸❤️🎶
Great song - so nice to see Tawny dancing again - she was "his woman" when this was shot!!!
ABSOLUTE BANGER! 🔥
As a teenager is right am blessed to have been that age when these songs dubbed "Metal Emotions" were hits. Best musical memories for the right age back then
Finally a studio version reaction, instead of some crappy live version
