I have the first version of SL-G700 and I am very dissapointed. I use Tidal as my main source for streaming. I must say that I never know if it should work or not. That´s an awesome device. Great review! I appreciate the well organized and deep dive insights. And who wouldn´t trust a guy wearing those shirts?! Keep up the good work, looking forward to more videos. Hopefully soon a review of the upcoming Technics SU-GX70 Streaming Amp.
Hi Bo 5000. Thank you for the kind words, man! I will be doing at least a Quick Review of the SU-GX70! It looks like crazy good value for the audiophile starting out? THANK YOU FOR WATCHING THE CHANNEL AND COMMENTING!
I've found that both the SL-G700M2 and the SU-R1000 can be operated by Roon right now, as of this writing. It's a little inelegant, but running the USB cable directly from the components to the Roon core (an iMac in my case), and doing a little setup in Roon will allow you to play music and control the components with the software. With the R1000, you set it to "PC1" or "PC2." No Technics player app needed. With the SL-G700M2, you set it to "Chromecast built-in," (you don't need to enable the app or even use it though) then set up the device. It's a little weird with the M2...no Technics app needed but the unit's display is incomplete, and it downsamples the signal, but still works. With the R1000, it's flawless, and you can send it any format including DoP in its native sample rate all day...all the way up to DSD 256 without downsampling. I can't test DSD 512 since there's no ASIO version for Mac. EDIT: Now I kind of don't even need the M2 anymore 😆.
Leeroy, yes you can always just connect a streamer that does Roon to the the amp, but it will always a extra step, and will not be able to control the volume in the optimal way. The direct built in Roon Ready support is almost always preferable.
You can easily do that, but only using the analog outs, as the preamp function is limited to the analog outs. The preamp function is good on the G700MK2. Would be a nice , simple system for sure! Let us know about it in the new facebook group!
You really can not, as the implementation of the chip is what matters most. Same chip can have very different results. Thank you for watching the channel!
Thank you! Great video? Did you connect an external hard drive to the SL-G700M2 using the Rear USB A? Which HDD SSD works? I understand the limit is 2 Tb SSD. Thanks for your help. I have a Samsung T7 SSD 2Tb, but it says "No Device" when I connect to the Rear USB A port.
I was also wondering what settings were being used. The nice thing about this unit is how tweakable it is. I use mine with the Remaster Setting on, and the filter set to Mode 2. The sonic differences are considerable, and anyone using it can check immediately by switching to Direct mode if you miss the old days of harsh digital top end.
If your friend used the XLR outputs (which he should have) what he says sounds like an absolute phase issue with the input of his preamp, check the XLR pin configuration of both units, some gear as pin 2 + other - if that is the case you inverted the signal, my SACD player Marantz SA7S1 has this important feature as well as my ML 326S preamp. Some recordings are out of the absolute phase so it is nice to have a preamp where I can check my CD disc, some sound night and day better. I love CDs and that is all I buy with players like the SA7S1 my older Esoteric k-01 you find just how good CD sounds and the only limit on their sound quality is the mastering of the disc itself same for LP which I grew up on, sold my whole LP collection and I have never looked back, there Is more myth to LP's sound being better than in life in use. No LP sounds the same on any system because the table itself, the choice of arms, cartridges, all change the sound of the same LP being played, NOT to mention how well the TT was setup along with the cartridge. Great CD players are constant in sound quality in the chain, after that, it gets down to your room acoustics (#1) and speakers and their setup. I've tried streaming and it is nowhere near as good as CDs, much like streaming a movie and then playing the Blu-Ray or 4K version of the same movie there is no contest, the disc stands out both visually and sound-wise. Lastly, like all gear look at the size of the power supply, which impacts the sound big time, this is why the Esoteric SACD players stand out, K03s and the K01s have a power supply of a small amp, and the K-1 does not have one transformer but 4! thus the weight of almost 80lbs of a CD player, compare this to one weighting 12-25 lbs, no contested in sound quality. You need a huge power supply on preamps also, which is why companies like Naim sock it to you by selling you an add-on power supply to add to the preamp you just purchased, why not build it right the 1st time? My preamp weight is at 40 lbs my amp 120 lbs and the Marantz close to 40 lbs. Anything can pass a signal and make music, but that is not the point it's how that music is reproduced and the quality of that sound. Save buy good gear and stop wasting money on the newest giant killer, good gear can last 20 years or more, and in the long run that is way cheaper than spending money over and over.
You provide a nice combination of critique and humor. The Technics would seem ideal as a digital source if the display were bigger. I suppose you need the tablet to compensate. I have a computer nearby; can you load the app on a PC instead?
Hi. Great review. If you connect this unit via the Sonos Amp, will audio play multichannel through all the sonos speakers i.e the arc , the sub and the era 300's ?
No. Its a stereo machine. But, if the surround sonos system have a upmix function, it can upmix stereo and spread it out in a meaningful way utilizing your surround system.
Thank you Morten! Outstanding as always. You never disappoint. When sending DSD received in from USB-B over PCM to the amp, which cable are you using between the player and the amp? Toslink or coax?
None.. It is not possible to go digital, not even DSD to PCM. So users will have to go analog to the amp for DSD. The reason might be that it is a SACD player, and thus DSD is not allowed to move digitally….
@@stjernholmreviews Okay, I was wondering about that given the limitations of both Toslink and coax. Anecdote: What I tried to do with the DSD format actually caused the R1000 to glitch out. I loaded legitimate DSD 11.2 files to a flash drive, plugged it into the M2's rear USB-A port, then hit "play," sending the signal to the R1000 through coax. Well...the R1000 interpreted that signal as 176.4 kHz (direct enabled), and it WOULD play it, but if I tried to interact at all with the Technics app while playing the music, the R1000 would display "F61" and promptly shut itself off. On a separate note, can you give an example of the M2's preamp capability? I'm not sure I understand that piece. Thanks.
@@leeroyjenkins8417 That sounds interesting. I was not able to get any digital out when playing DSD files. The analog output of the M2 can be either FIXED or variable. When set to variable, you are able to use it as a preamp. It worked quite nicely, without volume jumps, noises, clicks or the like. So it felt good.
@@stjernholmreviews Much appreciated. I could probably ask more questions, but I'll leave you alone for now. Congrats on the new listening room/studio. Looks great.
Hi Morten, love your reviews. I have a TDAI 3400 and looking to add a CD player (replace an Arcam CDS50). Did you use the G700Mk2 with your 3400 and if so how did it go?
Yes. We liked the neutral sounding TDAI 3400 converters quite a bit. But for some things in relation to the G700MK2, I would use both the balanced analog input AND a digital input, as some formats might sound a little better and with different texture when presented from the analog outputs of the 700. (will be converted again to digital in the 3400 for all its processing and so on being a digital amp, but its still like having two different signatures to choose from). The alternative would be to just get yourself a decent CD transport if you dont really require anything else than CD playing. Here you could look for a lyngdorf one if the integration is important to you or go for a clean, cheaper transport. With the 3400 the whole idea is to go digital right away, anyway. As always, just trust your ears in the end. Thank you for watching the channel! Keep those comments coming.
Great review, indeed. How does this stand in comparison with Cocktail Audio when it comes to DAC performance? Does it play gapless music. I am reyconsidering this to potentially replace Marantz ND8006, especially because of the Chromecast option since some titles are available only on Bandcamp which does not support Upnp/DLNA. DAC section is very important to me as today I am using Hegel H190 internal DAC so wondering if the Technics will be a step up! At this stage there is no Dealer bringing it to Romania yet, but the MKI only. Thanks
Unfortunately, i did not test the gapless playback. There is a couple of owners in here, that might be able to answer that. In terms of the mk2 as a dac, it is insanely clean and detailed. It strips everything naked, where the cocktail is more velvet, the mk2 is absolute precision, with no real character like you typically have with marantz products. Check the sound segment for more on this, as there was a rocksters second opinion too.
I just did a really quick test with the CD and 96kHz HDtracks versions of Tool's two songs Parabol and Parabola. When spinning the CD, the transition between the two tracks is as seamless as intended. When playing the digital files via USB-A flash drive, the transition is not gapless. In fact, one annoying thing about an otherwise wonderful player is the brief mechanical sound between songs when the source is USB-A. It's an improvement upon the original though, which was louder under the same conditions.
@@leeroyjenkins8417 Thanks Sir, Because gapless music is one of the features that ND8006 with Heos has eg. the last Marillion record An hour before it's dark is a perfect example of a record this feature is tremendously important. Pity this is not present here.

Few nitpicks/negatives from me: No eject/close tray button on remote. Also, remote is NOT backlit. Finally, the display is too small with little/missing information. For example, when playing an MQA-CD is shows CD playing instead. For the price, we should be able to edit the playback titles like most modern AV receivers let us do.
When designing a remote with different sized buttons that are spaced well, you really dont need the backlighting. I never missed it on all the newer technics gear I have reviewed to be honest. The display has layers of information, that can be called up via the remote. If MQA is registered from a digital source, it displays as MQA. And yes, agree on the input labels and unnecessary active inputs. Thank you for adding to the comments and for watching! Keep them coming.
I think it is the perfect fit with the NODE, if you dont have the need for SACD/CD playback and high.res DSD playback. You can even take the "CD" functions of the technics remote, and use the IR LEARN feature to program the buttons to control the node playback!
Price! They can produce more efficiently and just as precise in malaysia. That have enabled them to keep the pricing even though the inflation. I dont think any other has done that. So, generally - it seems like they are delivering really good value with all the "trickle down" technology. I am looking forward to review the new little GX70 streaming amplifier! Thanks for watching!
Anyone compare CD with Coherent Processing on and off? I find with it on, the sound is smooth, but a bit blurry images. With it off, mages are sharper, but the sound is fatiguing.
Why don't any of these high end players support blueray? What a no-brainer value add. There's a lot of guys like me, who have one system to do it all, but decided (or neeeded) to just stick with two channel. And do they have Tidal connect working yet?
It sounds like just the thing, right? In real life, there is a lot of challenges for the ultimate sound, and also a price target to keep an eye on. Check out the Magnetar UDP800 review for a machine that plays it all, but might lack in the streaming department.. Thank you for watching the channel!
@@stjernholmreviews That unit looks pretty good! (I mean, not the looks, actually, but the features.) Do you know if it can act as an SACD transport? I tend to assume it will convert to PCM. I don't know how big a penalty that implies, either.

And yes, agree on the input labels and unnecessary active inputs. Thank you for adding to the comments and for watching! Keep them coming.
There's an eject button on my remote. Third one down on the far right.
@@zaoria123 The first version didn't have the inject button on the remote, the second one does. That was one of the main complaints about the former.
Hi .
Streaming is better then bluesound node (2022) i own Su g700 mk2 and thinking about st g 700.what is your opinion. Thanks
I think it is the perfect fit with the NODE, if you dont have the need for SACD/CD playback and high.res DSD playback. You can even take the "CD" functions of the technics remote, and use the IR LEARN feature to program the buttons to control the node playback!
I always wonder why they are no longer making a lot of their stuff in Japan
Interesting perspective. Did not play around with it. Is it on by default? Thanks for adding to the conversation!
@@stjernholmreviews Yes, it is on by default. Can I ask if you found the player was any better at CD playback than SACD playback?
@@zackw4941 SACD transporting is not legal I am told. Thats why the only way you can get it, is via a universial disc spinner that have HDMI where they utilize the HDCP copy protection scheme.. Check the Magnetar UDP800 review. THANK YOU FOR WATCHING THE CHANNEL!
How much?
$3500
Dec. 11, 2023 ► “TIDAL” function is no longer available.
Thank you for your patronage of Technics products.
"TIDAL" function is no longer available due to a change in the specification listed below models.
We will release the main unit firmware update and dedicated smartphone application "Technics Music App" that removes the "TIDAL" function on Jan,2024.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Applicable models: SU-G30, ST-C700D, SC-C500, SU-C550, SC-C70
[*]As an alternative option, you can enjoy “TIDAL” function by operating a tablet or smartphone that has the official TIDAL app through Bluetooth or AirPlay connection.
Notice, this does not apply to the SL. It is specific older models, that probably can't keep up with Tidal API?
I have SL-G 700MK2. In blind audition compared with 33 years old DENON DCD2560GL, 4 from 5 five persons liked DENON more. Though it doesn't have a single capacitor alive neither in power supply section maybe nor in audio cirquitry. Technics is a very good and modern player, but DENON is much more musical reproductor, it is the music itself.
Thats why HIFI equipment is so fascinating for those who just listen. It sounds like you found your sound in a old sound. Thank you for watching the channel!
What about the Denon DCD-A110 SACD? It is the anniversary model; same price as the Technics; looks too like it is built way beefier
@@mahasidha9 Two reasons stopped me from buying DCD-A110 - first it lacks streaming capabilities and second there is no balanced analogue output.
@@mahasidha9 Its really hard to fault the SL-G build quality. It feels SO solid. I will see if its possible to get hold of a A110 LE at some point.
@@nickolaymiltenov Thank you for your explanation; we are not into streaming at all. Presently we own the Marantz SA 14S1 SACD/CD player and are just seeking something not as laid back; the Denon piece is supposedly more dynamic. Thanks again
I can't say I'm in love with that display. A slightly larger OLED panel would have been far more impressive. I received mine today. It's indeed unfortunate that the instructions are complete and total shit. Has ANYONE got this thing working with their NAS??? Apparently Panasonic doesn't know what a NAS is.
Again, made in Malaysia while absolutely not being sold in Malaysia.😢
So Weird! It seems to me, that the brand also have reseller issues in many parts of the world. Hard to find places to sample and see the products.
Noboby "needs" a high end CD player. It's a want, not a need.
Who said?
@@chebrubin Read the dictionary
@@bubblehead5394 hysterical. It is a audiophile SACD and streamer. What do you need?
Does it support multichannel output.
@@chebrubin I need shelter, food, and water. I want quality hifi gear.
@@bubblehead5394 ok maybe you are dealing with 3rd graders. I am dealing with passion and want and need unboxing therapy and multichannel DSD and Atmos.
Why is this video so long 😂
Thank you for watching. What do you think should be left out?
