CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Poor and widowed, Malena (Monica Bellucci) cuts her hair to make herself available to the men of the town.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A young man's infatuation for a beautiful older woman blooms amidst the outbreak of World War II in this bittersweet comedy-drama from Italy. Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro) is a 13-year-old boy growing up in a small Sicilian community. Mussolini has risen to power and has declared war upon England and France, but Renato has other things on his mind -- mostly girls. While hanging out with his friends by the seashore, Renato spies Malèna (Monica Bellucci), the daughter of one of his schoolteachers, whose husband Nino (Gaetano Aronica) is fighting with Mussolini's army. Renato is immediately obsessed with Malèna and follows her like a lost puppy, spying on her whenever circumstances permit and imagining her as his co-star in elaborate erotic fantasies inspired by his favorite movies. Renato, however, is hardly the only man in town to be struck by Malèna's charms, and her beauty leads to resentment from the women of the community. Malèna's circumstances take a turn for the worst after her husband is reported to have died in combat, and she is forced to resort to prostitution to survive; she is brutally attacked by a pack of angry matrons and driven from town. Renato tries to keep track of her, and has some less than encouraging news to report when Nino turns out to be alive and finds his spouse is missing. Malèna was written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, best known for the art-house hit Nuovo Cinema Paradiso; Malèna was released in Europe at 106 minutes, while the American version was edited by ten minutes to tighten the pace and remove nudity and sexual material considered too strong for the U.S. marketplace.

2:03 is no one gonna talk about the tear forming in her eye?? She isn't doing this for attention or for fun, she's doing this because she needs to survive
The tear symbolizes how she cannot stomach herself embracing the life as the new prostitute of the town. This is her only way to survive in this community dominantly run by men and women's role is being a wife or a mother.
it always made me so sad how she barely ever said or did anything in the movie but people hated her. like she literally didn't do anything and the fact that people did hate her just said a lot on its own.
many of us live our whole lives die that way that is the plan she is sad because it means that humanity is flawed & suicidal only in a world where she can be free or even brilliant can human survive & she knows it
It makes me sad to see her touching her hair after cutting it, then crying when men offered to light her cigarette, it means that she was letting go or her old self, the "widow" and the daughter that lost her childhood in her hair, then dyed it red and letting others light a flame, it symbolizes the burning of her innocence and hope, this scene breaks my heart, more than shoes, dresses, scorn and sex, she needed kindness, Monica is a great actress, she delivered the metaphor.

What is the name of the song
This scene made me feel so bad for her, losing everything, her dad, husband, money, and no proper food for her to eat. She was just resorting to using herself in the process just to survive. What a strong woman, I respect her for that.
You would do this too if you absolutely had to. Everyone would do it.
Yes, absolutely! I couldn't agree more with you both. I admire her, no doubt about it.
Great movie loved it but the women in those towns are so insecure, they ganged up on her because they were jealous of her beauty.
That's not just in that town. Where do you think all the bitchyness comes from between women. Because of stupid insecurities.
+Mila How come you insecure?
I found this whole movie to be unrealistic and exaggerated
+Aamir Ali depends where you're from. if you've never experienced mediterranean culture, wether it be a family member of friend, people are like that, especially italians, whose even though culture i truly adore, are a little "hyper" by nature. And keep in mind this is a movie about the 1940s, so don't be surprised if i tell you that some similar shit like this might have actually happened in real life. i'm Albanian and i've heard of a million stories of first generation people undressing what they call "loose" women in the middle of the town just to humiliate them in front of everyone. So, very realistic.
Tommy Hass yes, need. It's a very subjective matter and in my opinion its not a proper term to label people with, clothes are loose, not people…
but anyway it is widely used so i wanted to express what i meant by still standing my ground.
I honestly wanted to cry for her. The objectification of women by men plus the bitchiness they also receive from fellow women is fucking unreal, this film captures that perfectly.
this world is a crazy butthole indeed
Vanessa Berberi couldn't agree more
well.. in a real world hot woman like this one shouldn't be "alone". Easily becomes the target for bullying. She should have made "allies" with her haters too. u know that saying that goes something like " have ur friends close by, but ur enemies closer."
she should have used her beauty differently.. it's either hell or heaven depending on how u play it.

lol I've seen this type of american male before. The type who thinks someone saying that objectifying women is wrong is an attack on THEM and their manhood.
Yes, female objectification is wrong and immoral. Our modern culture unfortunately embraced female objectification to such a level that you can't even ignore its presents anymore.
I saw part of this scene before. I thought I was prepared. I was unprepared.
This movie digs deep. Men don't want to marry a woman if she has a reputation, then they just want to sleep with her. People ignore the average, but hate those who are exceptional in some way, especially if it is a woman. To not to be hated, you need to downplay your talent, beauty, success, whatever. 'Malena' also shows what happens when you are different from those around you. You have a target on your back. Blend in or pay the price. It's not Malena's beauty itself they hate, but how she flaunts it, thus being a threat.
She’s walking up like she’s attending everyone’s funeral cause I know I’d die if I saw someone that gorgeous in person.

Very true if I saw a woman like as beautiful as her in the real world . I would have protected her from the bullies. To also get to know who she really is , and not go by rumors. That is a mood
Fav part
Sometimes, the way women treat each other make me feel ashamed to even be one. You would think that after all that women had to go through, we would be more forgiving and kind toward each other, but nope. Human nature disgusts me.
No need to be ashamed of what other women do being a woman doesn't necessarily define who you are as a person I think there's no point of telling women to be nice to each other because of what women had to go through this limits the true meaning of humanity the missing point is that you shouldn't be treated based on your gender because at the end we're all different men and women and other we are all deserving of respect and compassion because we are human being not because we're the same

Have you even seen the movie she’s not becoming independent this is the mark of the start of her downfall
william jafta
Everybody admires beauty. There’s nothing wrong with it. If I see a beautiful girl, I tell him “look, isn’t she gorgeous ? I’ve never seen somebody so beautiful” .
But then again, I’m secure in my relationship and with my own beauty. It’s not like my fiancé will suddenly run off to go chat up a lady, just bc she’s beautiful. The same way I wouldn’t run off to go chat up a man just bc he’s richer.
@@abbiewilkinson8889 tbh, i was not mentioning her independence or whatnot... I was simply just show my appreciation to her striking dress and her style in general
Lea Lopez the entire point of the film is that she is sexualised and objectified because of the very thing and it is was ultimately strips her of her dignity as this part is when she is forced to become a prostitute mainly sleeping with German soldiers just so she can live and here you are romanticising and glamourising it you’ve clearly never seen it
That lil boy is no different from many other men who are fetishizing her. He is just masked in innocence and "good intentions".
have you actually watched the movie?
dgppp vv I did and Trudy is right:)
Nah, you should watch the whole movie
I doubt someone who saw her as an object would help out then husband Andy fight for her honor in school. Rewatch it
Yes at first he was only attracted to her but then he saw her suffering and genuinelly wanted to help her and he did in the end helping her to reunite with her husband :)
She's not looking down anymore like she used to. People hated her when she looked vulnerable and now they hated her for looking confident.
I have had one encounter with Ms Bellucci in real life, we shared a flight from Paris to Rio sope years back.
When I see countless expats being totally unable to take care of their kids after years of paid nannies, I saw her spend the entirety of the flight playing with her daughter, being a VERY good mother.

I would have left that town long time ago. Nobody deserves to be treated the way she was treated just for being beautiful
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ON THE PLANET
probably one of my favorite movies, a story of a strong beautiful woman who tried her hardest to have thick skin through everything she's been through. Even after the most traumatic experience she's been through she comes back, still strong.
Yes! Well said! ✌️
i thought it was black widow at first.. but wow! Such a beauty!
Even the women are envying Malena
It's all too common that whenever people see the tallest flower in the garden, they want to cut it down.
Beauty is lonely, especially when you know the feeling of what it’s like to also not be beautiful, I’m just talking from personal experience. It’s lonely, everyone objectifies you, they ignore you to make themselves feel better but you hear your name in their whispers, it’s lonely.
As a woman who has recently lost over 130lbs this is now the sad reality of how I am treated. I love this movie because it really shows the dark truth of being conceived as beautiful when around insecure individuals, men don’t approach me but stare, sometimes they act cold and distant as if it were a crime to just look at me or even breath in my direction and women are just as cold giving me mean looks, grabbing their man when they see I walk by, etc, I was mistreated before and now I am still mistreated though being pretty does have its perks, it is very dehumanizing at the end of the day.
😂😂😂
Bravo for having the consistency and dedication to be able to lose so much weight.I am on the path but I keep losing my willpower every now and then😞. The fact that i never got that kind of sexual attention used to irk me quiet a bit not too long ago, but now I just realize how i was saved from the illusion of desirability and how i got saved from craving it once that would have been taken from me. You goooo ma'am🔥
Also the objectification part is so true. I just have dawned upon the realization of how love is simply sold in the cruel world. Its almost treated as though it were a commodity, someething you gotta compete for and fight for like wild animals. The women holding their men(because of being insecure) and the men seemingly lusting (infedelity) its just a sad state of the world.
It's so fabulous and heartbreaking. A masterpiece of a scene.

Thats an amazing transformation, sad though, as she did it for survival
I'm guessing the alternatives to sleeping with Nazis were pretty slim? They didn't really show her try anything else besides prostitution in the movie. She just seemed like a pretty face with no skills besides fucking.
EmptyMan000 I guess you have a point, there were female workers at the time, like the ones working in sales you see at the end. Not saying they had the best jobs, but still...
EmptyMan000 she went to various places asking for a job and didn't get a job because the men's wives were jealous of her. Her only alternative was to sleep with nazis and others
EmptyMan000 she was a seamstress
did you not notice when she was looking for a job? smh they wouldn't hire her. not because she wasn't qualified but because of jealousy and stupidity of the people involved.
it happens today which is why many beautiful women will go on their own and make their own businesses and become independent contractors. thank goodness for the internet because human emotion, fraility and idiocy is as prevalent now as it was then. envy and gossip still thrive and still people target others and spread slander out of insecurity.

Malena is such a beautiful beautiful movie, and so so sad. I am very pleased that I watched it, even though it disturbed me so.
To see the animalistic behavior of humans as they beat her to shreds in the street. It is how people are...they want to "teach her a lesson." They want to dominate her, only accepting her in submission & modesty. They wait, to see if she'll submit. So she does, as though nothing happened. They then allow her back into the pack (since she is MODEST now). primal
And yet, that modesty is SUBMISSION and FALSENESS; rather than the TRUTH reflected in self confidence!!
There is nothing on earth that I fight for more greatly than vanity and self-confidence.
fight to maintain in a world which encourages dissatisfaction in oneself so certain people make a profit? A confident woman is a wondrous thing, in this world; she is love, feels love for herself and can give love. snarky, nasty cattiness is a terrible thing but is common.
Muslim society is like that ....that's the womans " CHOICE "

@@TheRealSlatkoReimers666 it's not her fault if she was beautifull
This movie made me so incredibly sad. I experienced some of what she went through on a smaller scale, and it’s extremely damaging. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
True . Very toxic
its as common as milk and bread
Yes, you're right. I experienced a lot of what she went through, and, like yourself, wouldn't wish said experiences on anyone.
She's a goddess
the tears in her eyes when the thought of how cruel the world is finally cements in her head
I'm here because of Hwasa's Maria MV. I love the artistry behind her songs and MVs. ❤️🥺
Her facial expression, that explains all.
She is Godness❤
It’s scary to know what women can do to other women because of jealousy
I LOVE MONICA BELLUCCI ! SOOOOOOOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL
1:43 I like how her face is like "yes, sister. Work it."
f-ing badass ✨✨✨✨
Not really its f-ing sad
@@hanahhuhahaha1105 why?
@@222vale watch the movie youll understand
@@hanahhuhahaha1105 okay thanks
Welcome 2000 Quarantine episode where Our QUEEN Hwasa💗 leads me there
The screen writing in this movie is brilliant
The saddest part of the movie was were she was beaten up and nobody.. Not even the men who "admired" her.. Helped
Because in fact nobody saw HER
They all just saw what they could gain/take/get from her.. Or what she's "taking away"
Drama between women and men of the place.. But not hers
She actually tried her best to mind her business
This scene made me realise that the acting skils of Monica Belluci has been overshadowed by her glamour and beauty...In most of the movies she is in, she has been used as a showpiece...This ironicallly reflects what heppens in the movie eventually...
she's an incredible actress
Someone teach me walk like that
The curse of beauty... Divine wine that comes with a taste of blood. 🌹
I was literally shocked by Monica's beauty in this movie
*Great and sorry for the guy who lost his arm in the end!*
this era should be today
I don’t think enough people realise the context behind this scene
