Should You Buy a Dress Watch? | A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin Review

- Today we make the case for why you should get a dress watch instead of the hyper popular stainless steel sport watch. Also, I review the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin. Thanks @CrownandCaliber for sending this one in! It's incredible!
If you're in the market for a second a watch I can't think of a better online retailer than Crown & Caliber. Check em out: www.crownandcaliber.com/

The Saxonia Thin is a great deal. Lange has the same standards of finishing for all their watches - from the entry level Saxonia Thin to the Zeitwerk to the Datograph. You're getting the best of what Glashutte has to offer. I am a proud owner of an 1815 up/down in rose gold, and I love it to death.
It’s so true! Sure the movement is less complicated, but I love that the standards of finishing are the same as they’re pricier pieces. I know it’s still expensive, but in the watch world it’s a great deal for sure.
The 1815 up/down is gorgeous. Congrats. The German watchmakers are underrated.
A white gold up/down is on my bucket list- just need a windfall of about $28,000…
Also take a look at Glashutte Original, another fine "manufacturer". Simply amazing!
I bought longines heritage collection sector dial as my only dress watch. Or so I thought. Half a year later, it became my most worn daily office watch. Some watches just have this natural ability to creep in your mind the exact moment you think “what should I wear today” in the morning.
Dude, watching your videos is like watching a master class on both story telling and cinematography. #almost10k 🙌
lol Thanks Matt! I really need to work on shooting outside and/or filming myself outside. You’re killing it with your outdoor montages! I dunno how you do it.
@@BrandonMenancio - whatever you’re doing is working. Keep it up bro 👏
Great video again ! Brilliant stuff , humour on point and great insight ! If only they were more regular ! I look forward to them ! It looks a lot of work , keep them coming 💪
MAN....keep it up. been following you since the beginning. you've quickly become my favorite watch channel.
This is your best video yet. Really hitting your stride with finding your style.
A lange & Sohne has been my favourite brand for the last 2 years and even this particular watch from the saxonia line looks like a very sophisticated and prestigious watch compared to other brands.
It’s an awesome watch. The finishing is superb.
It truly is the ultimate dress watch. Everything done to perfection. Every person should have a Lange. Just love my Saxonia Thin!
You deserve 100x more subscribers... Top notch content. Informative, high production value, and funny! Keep it going!
Thanks man! I do it for fun, but if more people tune in then that’d be great too!
Another superb video! Keep up the great work. Huge fan of yours ✌️
amazing to see the progress of your videos, i am sure you will have a couple thousand subscribers sooner than you think!
Oh man, my first video is pretty hard for me to watch now. Thanks for continuing to tune in!
That's a great point about dress watches. My only issue is their water resistance. It's like battery anxiety but for water.
Yup! I feel ya. I feel more secure wearing something a little more sporty myself.
Don't worry, most dress watches can handle a few splashes of toilet water no problem
it's really not hard to keep your watch away from water lol. If you have problems, then a dress watch especially a lange, isn't for you.
In 1974 I bought a Rolex Datejust haven't regretted it 100 ft water resistant and works as dress or casual !
I have a 1980s santos ultra thin (30m wr). Literally took a video of it before, with my arm out in rain, exposed, no issues. It’s rated for that. Don’t buy into the WR hype, I know people with modern submariners that take them off before swimming because they’re afraid the WR has deteriorated since buying. No one is getting ambushed or ‘surprised’ by water, i.e. no one is throwing you in a pool while you have a lange on. Just wear what you want. There are no ‘dress watches’, it’s all relative, what people call ‘dress watches’ now were ‘outdoor watches’ years ago. The santos was a ‘aviation’ watch when it was first created, it’s all relatively, just enjoy what you like.
Superb effort. Thanks for the great review and the effort that went into this.
Great review as always and that intro was 🔥🔥🔥 I feel you with the movement similar to the 1815
Man, one of your best videos!!! I love your watch content! Keep it bro
Whoa! Thanks man! I was a little proud of this one myself 😅
Another great video Brandon. You do such great B-roll and I like your commentary much better than some other watch channels. I also liked the placement of the yellow gold watch next to the 4th Hokage, the yellow flash of the leaf.
Thanks Eric! I appreciate that. I like dropping in all quick with the camera anytime the 4th appears. He’s so badass lol
Awesome video!
That’s what I love about sports watches. My SARB035 looks great on the SS bracelet when I’m out “exploring” on the weekends, & also looks fine dressed in business casual M-F. When I occasionally put on a suit, I can dress it up with a leather band. Someday I’ll have a GS.
The nice thing about the whole steel sports watch craze is that fine dress watches from Patek, Lange etc at going for way under retail. I'll be back when the market corrects itself.
Fantastic video! This is the first I've seen, and now I'm hooked (subbed!). Keep up the good work and I wouldn't be mad to see more dress watches 👍
Thanks man! That really means a lot to me! More to come…a couple of dress watches too 😎
I just found your channel through B&J… HOW DID I NOT KNOW YOUR CHANNEL BEFORE?!?! Freaking LOVED THIS!
I’m here! B&J is rad for sharing my video. Thanks for tuning in and keep up the fun shenanigans on your channel!
Nice video! I really love the look of the saxonia thin, thinking of getting it this year.
I love your reviews 😂 so real and down to earth.
This the most underrated channel on UA-cam rn!
Thanks man! Glad you tuned in 🙏
I could not stop looking at the movement. Great suggestion. Grab a La Croix, sit back, and watch the movement.
Thanks! It’s hard to enjoy anything without a la croix 😎
I love dress watches not only to pair with formal attires, but also for their aesthetics and details. My Credor Eichi II is also quite minimalism, but I haven't got bored to wear it 😁
Brilliant video. Underrated channel!
Loved the video man!
I love the A Lange brand and what they represent. I went with a Saxonia big date moonphase. To me, it’s dressy but I want the bigger dimensions. As a watch aficionado, I’ve moved on from the frustration of not being able to buy steel sports models at retail from the likes of Rolex, and I’m glad I discovered my appreciation for dress watches and A. Lange in particular. Vacheron also makes some supreme dress watches as well.
I found you at exactly the right time - I’ve been pondering a dress watch for far longer than any other watch, and trying to convince myself that my 36mm Explorer will not suffice! I’m thinking Breguet, a lot. Great vids, and thanks to Adrian from B&J for pointing me in your direction. Subbed😁👍
Hey Mark, I've got an Explorer 36 also and it's really cool but my blue DJ36 smooth on jubilee just pops and slightly edges it. They can still be had at list price or slightly over. I've got no regrets selling my GMT ceramic black.
Thanks Mark! Ooo Breguet makes some gorgeous pieces. The explorer is a great versatile piece, but not true dressy. Either way, if you have an explorer and/or Breguet you’re winning in my book!
Now is the best time to buy a dresswatch. They are the next hype!
Yessssss! It’s time for dressed-down gold dress watches to make a comeback😎
The reverso is my dressiest piece. And I love to wear it with a grey hoodie, jeans and sneakers. You're so right! Lange 1 ist auf meiner Wunschliste.
Right?! Wear it with whatever you want. It’ll look cool in almost anything. Thanks for watching!
I picked up a Reverso with the ostrich camel strap. It dresses it down and I wear it like you, with jeans and Jordans ! It’s a banger.
Yet I’m looking into a Frédérique Constant with Moonphase 🤩 as a more « classic » dress watch
Brandon, man we have similar taste in watches. My sports watch is an Explorer. The perfect watch. But I've been wanting a dress watch for a few years. Not just any dress watch, but the exact rose gold Lange in your video. Well I didn't end up getting it, but would like to one day. But a few months ago I picked up the Grand Seiko SBGW231. It's pretty similar to the Lange, but at a fraction of the price. More importantly, I would love to see classically sized dress watches make a comeback. They really do look the business and work great with anything with a collar. Great video as always!
Thanks man! I actually sold my explorer a while back. My tastes have changed a bit. I’m really heavy into grand seiko. I love that sbgw231 btw. I really want the jdm sbgw235. It’s very similar, but with a blue seconds hand and beads of rice bracelet. It’s just too similar in color to my sbgm221! Can’t have both. The Lange is great though. So sad when i sent it back.
This watch is beautiful! That intro man 😂 😂!!
Thanks Miguel! I know, it’s a mess lol
Hi brandon mars here its my first time to see your video. I am a watch lover as well and i am so amaze on your video and a not so boring way.. keep it up..
Amazing opening to the video and perfect dimensions for a dress piece! 🤘🏼😎⌚
Thanks dude! It was an incredible piece. Was so sad when I sent it back.
Awesome video as usual buddy!
Thanks Morgan!
I can’t figure out why you don’t have 200K subscribers. Great content and presence.
Thanks dude! Can you tell UA-cam that lol. I think consistency is one of my weaker points. Hard to make time, but I’m getting back on the saddle soon 😎
Awesome video Brandon! 👍
Thanks man!
I subscribe to Bark & Jack… your channel was just posted to his channel… gotta say I enjoyed this and subscribed to see what else you have going on!
Thanks James! Bark & Jack is the best. Hope you enjoy the content 😁
Didn't see this coming. Great video
Neither did I lol don’t know where these crazy ideas come from.
beautiful cinematography!
Thanks man! Your cinematography is better than mine! Ever think of doing voice over or reviews?
The la croix mention really ambushed me 😂
I think this might be my next piece. Thanks Brandon !
Oh whaaattt! I wish I could get one. Someday 😎
Shout out to LaCroix! 🤣 I dig the clean simplicity of dial. Thanks for another adventure in horology!
Not even one minute in and I've already hit that subscribe button
Thanks Wesley!
great video. good soundtrack as well
Thanks! My favorite part of making these is always the music picks.
Next level watch and great video. I also wear my Nomos Metro with shorts and t-shirt. Not a ALS but its pretty dressy
My dress watch is the Seiko 5 SNK793. Probably not the most traditional, but it gets the job done. I could even slap a leather strap on it if I want to dress it up even more. While it doesn't get much wrist time, it is nice to have whenever I need it
Saxonia is incredible… I would take this over a Calatrava or Patrimony. Don’t hate me!
I would too! It’s fantastic!
I bought a JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon thinking how classy it was and that I would have it forever as it was so timeless. Such a gorgeous watch but I had to sell it as I never wore the thing. If you can afford a large watch collection then fine, but I wouldn’t get another luxury dress watch.
I'm glad your opinion has changed since your Grand Seiko video. That Seiko GMT you have is beautiful and should be worn all the time. I live in Alaska and wear dress watches for camping at times. I"m careful what i bring and where i bring it. Somtimes you got a wear a sports watch for....well. sports. But i rotate my watches. I wear the next watch in rotation each day. I don't dress my watch to what i'm wearing for the very same reasons you explain in this video and i've never seen someone explain it like you have. Today I may wear a snowflake and tomorrow i may wear seiko diver. But the only time i will ever worry about whether the watch on my wrist is appropriate is in a down pour or if i'm working in the field and could bang it up. Otherwise i wear what i want when i want to wear it.
There’s a saying… “it’s nicer to have something and not need it, than to need something and not have it.”
I think that also applies to watches!
Yup! Couldn’t agree more. I think that’s the main reason a lot of us opt for the sport models. It’s also why the Datejust is so popular. Kinda dressy and still rugged!
A dress watch is my go-to timepiece for most of the time. Both for professional attire and my own preferences. Hence unless it’s weekend I’ll wear something on an alligator strap, thank you very much.
Dope. Dig the video and of course the watch
I totally dig that dress watch +tee +jeans look , really cool
I’m actually more of a dress watch + tee + sweats guy 😅
That's a beautiful watch 😍 great job on the video bro! Killed it!!!!!!!
Dude! Thanks man!
@@BrandonMenancio anytime my man! Keep at it! Can't wait for the next one.
Let me know when you’re in town too. Things seem to be opening up again.
@@BrandonMenancio yeah bro! That's a must!
Thanks Brandon, its been a while since your last video. I agree I wear my black dial 2 tone Datejust with jeans and t-skirt because I love the watch !!! To Heck with everyone else !!!!
10/10 fantastic video!
Thanks Paulo!
Great video per usual! You should see about reviewing the new 36mm Explorer to compare it to how you felt when you had the Swiss only.
Thanks Nicholas! I’d love too review one, but they’re a little hard to get a hold of right now. One of these days I hope.
By far the Best ' video about dress watches ⏱
MIss you, man! Hope another video its on its way soon...
Thanks man! Coming back soon!
Listen Menancio, tonight I'm in the mood for a watch review by some Redman/Lionel Ritchie crossover with some kick-ass tunes in the background but I've already watched them all... more than once. I demand more videos!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I know, Simon! I’m gonna get back on the saddle soon ish. Everyone called me Redman or Lionel Ritchie in high school lol funny stuff! Thanks for the support man!
This is a stunning watch
I agree. I wear my dress watches with t-shirts and jeans. Great look.
I'm 100% with you, on the dress watch love! ⌚
The Lionel Richie wig made another appearance!! Yes! 💪🏾
Dude! Your hilarious! You seem like someone that just likes to have fun...I like that. I like dress watches but I’m also someone who tends to bump into walls as if it’s the way to navigate life. So stainless steel watches is where I’m doomed to stay.
Love the verge shirt ya got on and by the way I did make it down to the Beverly Hills GS and said hey to Xavier and Eric, good dudes! I now have my eye on one of the four season watches. They dope, they dope for reals.
Also I feel ya on the dress watch thing. I have a Nomos Tangente and it could be considered a dress watch or just a watch this fits perfect for everyday life.
Love the Verge. They sorta inspired me to start making videos. Oh, the GS guys are great! Very helpful and friendly. It’s cool when the folks at the boutique are enthusiasts themselves. 1 of the four seasons is on my radar too. Or the white birch. We’ll see!
Nomos tangente is nice. I like the metro a lot too. Might get one eventually.
@@BrandonMenancio the white birch is dope. I can’t wait till that new movement makes into more of their offerings. I haven’t seen it in person though. Is it white or silver? In videos it looks very silvery.
More silvery for the most part, but it’ changes a lot depending on how the light hits it. It’s overall gorgeous watch IMO.
Goat intro
I sold my 2022 Pepsi GMT to buy this watch (preowned, 40mm Saxonia). Don’t regret it whatsoever. Dial has to be the most beautiful color I’ve ever seen on any watch and compliments the rose gold perfectly with a brown strap. I still have other watches of course but the Saxonia is my new daily, vying for being my best watch next to my 126711CHNR.
Love the humor. A breadth of fresh air on the content and topic.
Looove my Saxonia thin! Only reason I’d ever consider selling it is to help fund a new Day Date…
Oh….. well hello there, welcome back Sir
You're totally right. Dress watches are getting more popular. Just see Cartier prices are increasing for their Santos line
I maybe wear a suit once or twice a year but absolutely love dress watches... The Saxonia is beautiful.
Same here!
i agree 100% - i loathe dressing up and having to conform to an occasion just because. Killer watch though!
Yoooo, is that a Slam Dunk poster right behind you at 1:33? That show takes me back!
Back on topic, I love dress watches. They're minimal, elegant, but also functional. I have a Stowa Marine 36 that's been my daily wear for almost three years. It's not as thin and understated as your Lange, but it's still dressy enough imo. I'm also biased because I grew up in a household where a lot of the men wore dress watches everyday. Besides, if I wanted something tough, I'd wear a G-Shock or a Citizen ;)
It sure is! Best anime ever! Did you read the manga? The real ending is only in the manga. Incredible! A slam dunk movie is coming out this year too! Ahh love it.
Dress watches are very nice. I wasn’t really into em as much with all the hype surrounding stainless steel sports models, but after trying this one out for a while I can totally see myself owning some one day.
Thanks for tuning in!
@@BrandonMenancio Ohh, you're right! Going to have my eyes peeled for the movie.
I only read part of the manga back in 2015 but the anime has a special place in my heart! Aside from it being a great show, it was one of the first anime I've watched.
I'm a fan of the Up down
Dress-ier watches are usually my favorites (if you include watches with complications, which is debated), and A. Lange & Söhne is my favorite watch brand of them all. Although, I will admit this particular model isn’t among my favorites. Nevertheless, your point is a good one: if people can wear a submariner with a suit, then why not wear a dress watch with casual attire. I do.
I'm blessed to love dress watches and dressing up. Phew.
Please more about lange und Söhne
Nice intro jajajaja, great content
This or the VC tradionelle patrimony is the real question for me haha. I like the small seconds on the VC but the Saxonia has a prettier movements
What a piece
It’s gorgeous!
First.... yes I am a success at life now xx
Winning! Lol thanks for tuning in so early 😁
Good video
Thanks for sharing. What’s your view on the size of the watch? Would you have preferred the bigger 40mm predecessor of this same watch? Noted you mention about having a 7.25 inch wrist, is 37mm too small? Reason I’m asking is I have a 7inch wrist and was concerned whether 37mm feels small on my wrist. Thanks
Thanks for tuning in! I didn’t mind the size at all. Sizing is such a personal thing though. My guess is it’d look great on your 7 inch wrist, but it’s all preference.
I like to have a seconds hand. I think for minimalist ultimate dress watch, I'd have to go with a Patek Calatrava 5119g (36mm, H,M,S, see thru case back).
Not a bad choice at all. I did miss the seconds hand, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me.
Lange has the greatest finishing of just about any watch brand. I absolutely love them.
Curious. What’s this guy do for a living? Seriously just want to know. That’s a really nice piece!!
Will I ever buy that watch? Nah. Will I continue watching Brandon's videos on watches that I'm not really interested in? Definitely!
Jokes aside, you have a great point with the "we should buy less for the features that we'll never use"
Haha Thanks Paulo! I get why people buy the non-dressy stuff though. You never know when you might need that sturdiness.
Why do you like wearing that? Cause it's another gorgeous offering from A. Lange & Sohne. That's why!
It’s gorgeous! What’s not to like?!
Beautiful! This reminds me of a Grand Seiko (SBGW231) that looks alot like this and has a hand wound movement that is just as attractive as this one. It’s thicker but also a lot less expensive. I want it so bad!
Duuuuuuddddeeee I love that watch! Have you seen the SBGW235?! It’s a JDM model that looks almost the exact same except it comes on a beads of rice bracelet and the seconds hand is blue. I lovvvvvve that one!
@@BrandonMenancio I did! I just found out about that model yesterday. I was just looking at them on ebay last night lol. I defiantly would go for that one if I had $4500 laying around.
It’s even better in person! If you’re in the LA area I think you can ask the GS boutique to order one for you. I THINK. If only watches were cheaper lol
Awesome
Thanks Jouma!
For great value dress watches, go vintage. So much cheaper than new. Vintage divers tend to be a premium over new equivalent, but vintage dress at a big discount to equivalent modern.
a collection needs a dress watch. the dimensions of watches are many. sporty, diver, casual, tool, and one for when you want to be posh and elegant. every dimension of what a man is has a watch for it
If I want a watch for dressy occasions, I throw my Aqua Terra on a strap and call it good. One day, when I have my favorite A. Lange & Sohne, that will do the job.
Do you have a specific nomos you recommend? Thanks!
I think the closest budget comparison from Nomos would be their Orion, but they also have the Tangente, Ludwig, Zurich. They also have their higher end Lambada line, but for the price I’d get the Lange instead.
Fantastic points but difference between your watch and say a Submariner is the sub-mariner is more durable and certain people need your durability
What do you think about the Blackbay 36 with a smooth bezel? 😄
I like it. Great price, classic design, rugged. I want one! Lol
Brandon Menancio haha okay thanks 😄
