  • Ep17: Sailing to the Med through French Canals and Rivers takes some effort. It also requires resilience when your boat gets bashed about in locks. We visit Bailly Lapierre in Burgundy where Crémant de Bourgogne is produced. Options sails from Sens to Châtel-Censoir through more than 20 locks on her way to the top of the Nivernais Canal.

Mostly fun Patrick! The Crémant was delicious - just wished we had more storage space. Thanks for watching.

@@sailingoptions I'm not a great lover of sparkling wines but the Limoux we got when we visited on a day trip from our Canal du Midi cruising was delicious!

Ouch that scraping sound went right through me. Great video though it’s good to see your skills and confidence improving. Thank you for posting.

Second the ouch re scraping sound. My wife and I did a part of this portion some years ago, and had a wonderful time, as you two seem also to be having.
I've watched from your beginning and have one question. What month is this? The weather seems quite nice.
I look forward to following the rest of your voyage.
    Cheers.

I agree Alan, hearing that sound is worse than finger nails down a blackboard! This section was late September on the Yonne and Nivernais. Thanks for watching.

Reference the issue with having to swap lines side to side, I'm debating how many to carry. I was thinking fore/aft and a single spring each side and a couple of extra long ones plus a couple of spares. I notice you have a mixture of twisted and braided. Do you use them for specific purposes? I have found the braids much easier to handle for locks and the like but twisted (with shock absorbers if necessary) when mooring for a while.

Hi! Sorry we haven't responded earlier! You're on the right tack with the mooring lines. WE use the rubber shock absorbers to get a quiet night when moored in Marinas when passing boats or swell cause the lines to creak around the cleat :) However, soft polyprop line is great to handle and stretches to eliminate "snatching".

Can you tell us what map book Sheena is reading at 8:46???

HI fellow boaters! Sheenagh is referencing Fluviacarte, Voies Navigables No. 19, page 37 😁 They are difficult to purchase now, but use this link to find the alternative: www.french-waterways.com/resources/guides-pilot-breil/
      Hope that helps?
Merry Christmas FBG - keep the videos coming!!!

Wow!, thanks so much for the detailed reply. We're sitting here in Vancouver and plotting our French escape. Wishing you all the best of the season and apologies to Sheenagh for the misspelling!@@sailingoptions
