  • So is this new technology is this old dinosaur worth it? In 2020 Toyota introduced apple carplay, android auto, Toyota Safety Sense, key less entry, and push button start into the 4Runner. Long story short, all these upgrades are AWESOME! Toyota did such a great jon added "all this tech" into such an old chassis.

    I just purchased a 2021 TRD ORP with Entune3 with navigation. Coming from a 2019 OR I definitely like the larger screen - but I find the usability of the previous system to be better. In the 2019 models, when using USB based music, the alphabetized searching was a breeze - push a letter and scroll down and into the music - all by the steering wheel controls. The search feature on the new system is brutal with keyboard entry...
    But my biggest issue is the system speed locks-outs including the USB browser function when the car is in motion - this is crazy. How are you suppose to change artist and albums while driving? Voice control makes you want to drive off a bridge!!!!

    Hey Jon. I definitely agree with several of your points on the new 4Runner. I do love a lot of the new features. My wife has had her 21’ Magnetic Gray TRD Pro 4Runner for a little over a month now and I’ve noticed a few areas where I wished they would have upgraded a little more. I have a 19’ Tacoma TRD Pro and it has the off-road angle monitoring, blind spot monitoring in the mirrors and one of my favorites, the wireless charger base. Why hasn’t Toyota incorporated these into the 4Runner yet? It’s frustrating that they play the hot/cold game with upgrades. It’s already available to them so just add it already! With all of that being said, I like the new 4Runner enough that I have one on order for me. Getting rid of the Taco and into the 4Runner! lol

    • @connie2264

      I agree... there are some things that are just basic and should be on all.. like the display and head units... my husband has a 2020 Tacoma TRD and I have a 2019 4Runner TRD premium and it's such a stark contrast.. even my son's '19 Tacoma TRD tech is upgraded over my 4Runner.. even keyless entry.

    • @JAMESWUERTELE
      @JAMESWUERTELE 3 роки тому +1

      The Tacoma needs blind spot monitoring, in my opinion. The 4Runners do not. They have better visibility. I got rid of my Tacoma because the 3.5 sucks, build quality is better, full boxes frame, more interior room in front, grease zerks, the 4Runner is built to last. The Tacoma (2019 TRD OR DC man) I had didn’t seem to be as solid.

    My wife loves the Apple CarPlay. Remote start through the Toyota app is also nice. What I don’t like is that she can monitor the vehicle when I’m driving it and she calls me like a dispatcher and tells me to slow down and stop driving like a moron. Well, “moron” is my normal driving mode and dumbing it down for a vehicle that’s smarter than me is not in the cars. 😂. I'm curious how you like the Softex seats? I have heard they don't breathe very well in warmer climates and some people say they sweat or get sticky from them. There seems to be a split like/dislike for them. I have never had anything like them, but like that they seem easy to clean. But, have also seen some long term peeling and wear issues. I am in-between picking up a 2021 TRD OR or ORP. The seats and the push button are two of the major factors on my decision making. Thanks again for another great video!

    • @Austin-oj9jq
      @Austin-oj9jq 3 роки тому

      They’re not bad seats by any means. I think they’re very comfortable to sit in due to how adjustable they are. I live in southern Indiana so I see 0-100 degrees throughout the year. They heat up quick and get hot with the seat warmers in the winter. In the summer they definitely don’t breathe the best. Definitely not uncomfortable by any means but if you’re already sweating a little down there it’s not going to get better haha. Cooled seats would be a game changer for sure and I’m kind of upset they didn’t come in my pro or even the premiums for that matter. To sum up though I’d give them a 6-7/10 in the summer months. If you get in hot and sweaty your butt is going to stay that way. If you get your car cooled down before you start sweating you shouldn’t have a problem.

    We have a 16 Tacoma and 21 4Runner. The gauge cluster on the Tacoma has that center screen and none of the safety sense stuff. Weird they only upgraded that on the 4Runner for safety sense. Which I turn all of it off. The head unit on the 4Runner is great. It has apple car play and android. Only thing I don’t like is the phone must be plugged it to use. Once plugged in my phone doesn’t fit in the slots below. A longer charger is needed and if it leans on the 4wd knob it will make noise. Wish it was Bluetooth but I’ll take it.

    The Lane Departure doesn’t turn off at 32 MPH, that’s when it will come on. If you’re going under 32, it won’t beep at you if you go over the lines.

    • @elizabethwonders
      @elizabethwonders 3 роки тому +1

      So if you set Lane Departure to “off” it comes “on” after 32 MPH? Thanks

    • @staywickless
      @staywickless 3 роки тому +1

      @@elizabethwonders no, if you turn it off, it’s completely off. But he mentioned that it goes off at 32mph. When you have it on, it will not beep a warning at you if you’re going under 32mph and go over the lines. If it’s on, and you’re going over 32pmh and go over the lines, then it will give you the beeping warning.

      @@staywickless Thanks for the explanation. I can see why some would want the beeps, and others not. I owned a Subaru before my 4Runner, and it beeped soo much, that it was maddening. Last week I took by '16 Limited to get serviced and I saw the guy that sold me my truck. Since it was a slow day for them, him and I chatted about the upcoming 6th gen and what is possible the last year of the 5th Gen. He said he had one '21 Limited on the lot and asked if I wanted to test drive it and I did. Driving wise there was virtually no difference between my 2016 and the 2021. Though because my 2016 had a pedal commander I was less impressed by the 21's acceleration. My 2016 also has keyless entry and a push button start.
    He did show me the new head unit, the radar cruise control, the lane assist and the entry keypad. Overall I did not believe it was worth buying a new truck for the new "tech" it had. To me, the biggest change was the head unit, but I can buy a $700 head unit to replace my stock one and I will be just as satisfied.

    I was planing on getting a 2019 4runner with the plan to upgrade the head unit with a aftermarket one. And I HATE doing that, but I just didn't like the one in the older 4Runners.
    I don't really care about keyless entry. I prefer a key. Especially one that I can easily make a copy of at the local lock smith no problem. I really like the dash board screen. Which is funny because my 2015 Caravan, I don't have it. I have the little calculator strip as I didn't want/need to spend the extra money for the next model up.
    It's funny, but I've been on the fence getting a 4Runner for 3 years now, and every year they have added something that I was looking to upgrade aftermarket on my own, so I guess the wait is paying off? But seriously, I'm not a fan of too much tech but I am liking the new upgrades that they have added.

    After driving a 2020 4runner for some time now: 1) Wish the dash screen was customizable. The sway and eco screens are useless and should be able to be toggled on/off while flipping through screens. Also, dte should be on the same screen as speed on the bottom. My 2017 tacoma had that but my 2020 4runner is same as you vid. Really speed and dte are main items 99.9% of the time. 2) climate control knobs are visually confusing. Lots of notches around the knobs make it hard to distinguish settings at a quick glance. 3) Don't understand why 4wd knob isn't a knob on the dash like the tacoma. Could save a ton of space in the center console for more storage/cup holders. 4) My 2020 climate control is super sensitive. On several long trips I find myself adjusting one notch back and forth on temp and experiencing large swings in temp inside. Maybe dual climate control fixes this, but my trd off road doesn't have dual climate.
