When I was in high school in 1971-72, I drove a 57 DeSoto Fireflite. It originally was my Grandfather’s. Good times.

That car is for me! The Desotos and Imperials are my favorites of both generations of "The Forward Look" MoPars!

I did not appreciate these at the time like I should have. The 1957 De Soto is my favorite year. I wish a great model of one would be available.

Let's just all agree that, in fact, the 1957 DeSoto is the best-looking car ever made. Because it is.

I like the 58's when they changed the lights to 4 instead of 2. More futuristic. Like Jetsons.

      @@eugenepiurkowski6026 I think both the 57’s and 58’s were stunning,but I’d go with the 58 too.

Glad the Mrs. still has room for her bonnet! That's what is most important to her.

Bring back the tail fins and dash mounted rear view mirror.

All 1957-model American cars would only accommodate a standardized license plate that measured 6x12". Before that, different states issued different-sized plates. Chrysler Corporation made the most of this new standard by recessing a license plate well into the trunk lid, which is plainly visible here.

Wow, that tickled my brain...! DeSoto used to sponsor Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" show in the 50's. Not too many of us around that remember that.

If only Chrysler knew in 1957 how to prevent their cars from rusting out in 3 years!

Now I'm not really complaining. But these were serious rust buckets. Nice design but lots of under protected sheet metal. For sure they didn't last more than 4-5 years without disintegrating. When did Chrysler eventually deep six the Desoto?

Chrysler Corp. terminated the Desoto division in 1961, but not before making a few mockups for '62 based on Dodges. In addition, the Desoto name was kept alive for the export market.

Those fins will be useful at 600 mph. At least it's not as gaudy as a Dodge; more tasteful. DeSoto ends with the 61 model, but a downsized 62 got as far as clay.

Impossible - Thunderbird debuted in the 1955 model year. They were also much more subtle looking than Mopar's Forward Look (less chrome and smaller tailfins).

Great for looks...horrid to own. '57 screwed Chrysler for '58, which was a bad year for all, but Chrysler really got slammed hard because if Exner's "styling over function" philosophy. Leaky windshields, rustouts, broken torsion bars, cheesy interiors, broken door handles and more combined to set Chrysler on a downward spiral that resulted in Exner's exit.
