Well, yes and no. Their future / alternative present is, as is always the case, quite retro compared to our reality. - Large bulky flip phones. - Car phones. - Laser guided missiles that require constant lock on their gunships. (Apaches have had fire and forget hellfire missiles for decades now) - Outdated tanks. (the Type 90 tank shown is inferior to the Type 10 that Japan already posses and would likely deploy to defend Tokyo) - Small caliber auto-cannons on their gunships. (That rotary cannon seems to be shooting something smaller than even 20mm on the Cobra Gunship. Apaches have 30mm, IFV's are going up to 40mm) Ofc that's less of an issue for the year 2002 that the story is set in :D
This is clearly among my top-5 best anime movies ever. It’s kinda surprising that a theoretically lighthearted franchise such as Patlabor could be used for a dark, deep and complex film like this.
@@Capt1ve7 You can watch it as a standalone, probably will encourage you to have a deeper look into the franchise ;-) That is how it was for me. The TV-Series is great!

Never heard of this film before. But this video was really hooking. The name is Patlabor 2. Does that mean I should I watch the first one first or can I just watch this one?
Patlabor 2 is unique in the Patlabor franchise. Most of Patlabor is light-hearted early mecha anime, and Patlabor 2 stepped away from that to be a political thriller. All of Patlabor is worth watching, but you can watch Patlabor 2 on its own. Aside from a few references to the first film, it’s a standalone film.
@@LordElpme In anime they could probably afford drawing them exploding on scene instead just fireworks beyond horizon of hill, so maybe they would trade? :D or possibly they would explode behind buildings instead? 🤔
No. Totally useless in current warfare. Obsolete as CAS itself especially in form of helicopter Just remember that drones can hunt helicopters. Stingers and other AA weapons are also very deadly, and lets not forget about simplest AA guns like ZU-23, S-60 and even guns like Rh202 (Marder) or 40mm bofors (CV9040) can effectively destroy helicopters on a very close range (up to 4 or even more km sometimes). Use of guided bombs and other high precision munition out of radius or at least at maximal radius of enemy air defence is much more practical.
Lots of anime like that in that era. For me its a tossup between Serial Experiment Lain and Ergo Proxy for the top award of Most Boring Anime I Can't Stop Watching.
Old-school Japanese animation studios were doing it so right. I mean, look at all the choppers and blasts; no new-age anime could replicate this masterpiece.
Average NCO is frankly even more stupid irl. Just ask anyone who was stationed at Fort Polk or experienced early years of Iraq, it was absolute shitshow...
As other person said they were targeting the police mech not the crew and the Helicopters could not carry many rocks so they were saving ammo for other targets
A genius veteran nearly dies in Thailand, as a result of what he considers Japanese hipocrisy. His unit disappears and is presumed gone. Decades later, escalating scandals and crises start occurring in quick sequence...

The Patlabor movies really nail that 80’s and 90’s techno-machinery obsession. They made the future (or alternative present) really seem possible.

The targeting of the bridges and communication infrastructure is so interesting.
Knock out eyes and ears, land lock em, get em where you want em
Why? It’s basic SOP
and also their response equipment. textbook perfect
Kinda crazy that a police comedy drama tv anime has such a serious movie of politics

they still used both here
