If you’re gearing up for an exciting life abroad in Madrid but feeling a bit overwhelmed, look no further! We hope this video will help you make a smooth transition and meaningful connections in the vibrant Spanish capital.
From language barriers to adapting to a new culture, moving abroad can be challenging. You’ll be far away from friends, family … and familiarity. You’ll navigate things like culture shock, homesickness, finding a place to live, working and finding a job in Madrid, getting all the admin sorted out, the list goes on and on …
Only other expats understand these struggles. We’re bringing you their voices and experiences to guide you on your own journey.
In this comprehensive video, seasoned expats hailing from various corners of the world come together to share their insights.
    Here’s who you’ll meet:
Azita, originally from Iran. After living in various places in North America, she has now settled in Madrid and knows all about what expat life is like …
Hakeem, who owns an Afghan carpet store in Madrid, selling beautiful textiles from his home country …
Christoph, a long-time German expat, whose work is all about bringing international people together …
And finally, Tatiana from Ukraine. Spain is the second Spanish-speaking country she’s lived in …
You’ll get answers to questions like do you need a car in Madrid, what is public transportation like, what you can expect when it comes to healthcare, favorite spots in Madrid, is it necessary to speak the local language, how easy is it to get settled in Spain, how you can meet other international people, and more.
When it comes to making friends and building your social life in Madrid, an expat community like InterNations makes it a lot easier. You’ll be able to connect with fellow expats at events organized by welcoming hosts. And you’ll find everything from professional networking to smaller groups based on your hobbies and interests.
The InterNations Community in Madrid has over 70 groups and hosts 8-10 networking events each month.
As you’ll see in the video, expats can get to know fellow internationals (while having fun!) at activities such as the ones organized by the popular Madrid Running Group. If running isn’t for you, no problem. You’ll find many other activities to choose from, like cooking, languages, travel, and much more.
Before long, you’ll make new friends while enjoying new experiences in Spain. Your dream expat life starts now!

We are expatriates in the sense that we choose to leave our native country, we are, from your perspective, immigrants because we choose to live elsewhere from our native country.
    Semantics…..

Una pregunta, por qué si ustedes vienen a España son expatriados y si yo voy a EEUU soy inmigrante?
    No les parece muy arrogante?
One question, why if you come to Spain are you expatriates and if I go to the US am I an immigrant? Doesn't that seem very arrogant to you?

      Hello,
Thanks for reaching out. We understand where you’re coming from and that not everyone will agree with our use of the term “expat”.

We use “expat” to refer to any person who chooses to live outside their native country, often on a temporary basis.
Regardless of the name, at InterNations, we welcome everyone who lives an international life.
