It doesn't matter what Neil Young wrote the song about it. Like all music it touches everyone differently. Whether you dedicate the song to your dog, friend, car, or parent. It provides comfort. That is what it is all about!
I went to a funeral a couple days ago of someone I didn't know personally.... So many people were there and everyone seemed to love him. One of his friends read these lyrics because this was his favorite song. He was a 37 year old man who died of a brain tumor about a week after his 2nd child was born. His family had moved to Oregon a few months before and now his wife has to move again with a 2 year old girl and newborn boy. Long may he run.
"The Wonder Years" brought me here. As they towed the family station wagon away after it was deemed un-fixable, they played this song. It's one of the best episodes of the series.
When they are gone, there's no turning back. Last week, I was on a 9 hr drive home from a failed business partnership. Somewhere over Maryland, this song came on, and I could not hold it together. It was all for the better, but what a hard couple of days it has been.
I gave up my Alero for a new car yesterday. I have been crying on and off all week. It breaks my heart to give up my first car. It really feels as though someone died. That car was there for me when I had no one. God blessed me with her and she kept me safe for many years.
Colin Hughes was learning to play, Neil Young's Harvest album. He worked at very hard. Colin Hughes of Atlanta Georgia passed away, suddenly on March 15th 2015. So to him I dedicate this song to him and his memory!!!! Colin Long May You Run....
My mom never had a car growing up. I bought her a little old Saturn I fixed up. Always ran strong for her and would only break down when I was visiting. My mom would joke about who would outlast who, her or the Saturn (Elizabeth). Well it's looking like the Saturn's gonna win. My mom dedicated this song to old Elizabeth. Who knew Elizabeth would be the one singing it. Long may you run Mom. Elizabeth is in the rear view!
Neil Young had a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse which faithfully served him and his young fellow musicians for many years as their band gear transporter as they made great memories. Then in 1962, the gearbox packed up after a missed gearshift on a long descent of a hill outside Blind River, Canada, and that was the end of their van which had been such a part of all those early memories. Their band -- Buffalo Springfield -- was also changing and reforming at that time and it was uncertain whether these changes were going to be good. For several months the car apparently stood abandoned by the roadside, with its "chrome heart shining in the sun" until it was finally moved to a junkyard. It's a lovely song of memories of the times they had with their old Buick, "Mortimer Hearsefeld".
My friend recently passed away and they played this at her funeral. Her best friend explained that for years they thought it was about losing someone and then one day they realized it was about a CAR and it was the funniest thing to her. I think something that would have made the deceased smile is the best thing to have at a funeral. Long may you run, friend.
My first job was at a coffee shop when I was 17 where they played this song on their radio...hearing this song takes me right back to those nights at the coffee shop
I lost my grand father to Ms and he couldn't use his legs for a huge quarter of his life. This song reminds me of him and all the horible things I've said to him. We were in the hospital and I was on my laptop instead of spending my last hours with him. I always thought it was my fault because I didn't get to say goodbye. And i was too interested in my devices then spending my last momebts with him. I miss him everyday, but I know he's probably running into the sunset and enjoying his new life. Long may you run Grandfather. I miss you💕
It is correct because that big chrome thing in Harleys isn't a motor, it is their heart. I love feeling that the bike is alive, under the seat. Only Harleys or custom motorcycles can do this to me. So, long may our bikes run, brother! Have fun and ride safe😉
I play this on my acoustic to my son. I've not done many things that well in my life but I have by all accounts been a great dad. He's just turned 17 & is literally flying. He walks a clever line between being in with all the cool kids - partying & having a lot of fun whilst doing extremely well in his studies. Most importantly of all he is a kind, compassionate & considerate soul who I'm immensely proud of. *Long may he run* & all our kids out there!
My friend told me he met someone in Northern Ontario who remembers the whole event about the car in blind river. Maybe he was the mechanic. Funny how a song about a car can become legendary..lucky dude
when i was at the starbucks in lax i was waiting for my flight with my girlfriend and this song just came on and i started crying. i didnt want to come back to canada. she gave me the best two weeks i had ever had. till june 14th 2014
God....This puts everything in perspective. I just tuned in to hear this song because my car was stolen and the theif killed the engine. My car was there on the side of the road. I got her back but just spent alot of money on putting in a new engine. I felt like this was a set back as I only had the car 3 months. A 1997 Sentra. I just couldn't sell her for junk. Then I read your post. Wow. What a heart crusher. God bless the mom and babes..
Farewelled my 1998 Mitsubishi Magna now. Taken for scrap metal. Towing guy found it weird it took pictures of it as it departed. But although it had $0 value, the memories are priceless.
To my parents who are no longer in this world...mum&Dad? long may you run my darlings... thanks for my birth... see you both one day wait for me babesXXXX
Tomorrow is the first anniversary of my mom's passing, just listening to this song brings back memories of last year this time, when Mom was ready to die and was saying goodbye to everyone. May she RIP; hard yet easy to believe it's been a year now, since she went home to meet her Savior. Long may you run up in heaven,Mom. Although you're gone, you're certainly not forgotten. Not a day goes by that we don't miss you.
I dedicate this song to my now decieced grandfather. He had Ms so he couldn't walk, I miss him very much. Everytime my dad and I listen to this we cry and pray that he is doing well up in heaven with all the angels and he's walking and singing like he used to before he lost his ability to walk. 💔 I miss you grandpa and I'm always thinking of you💞 long may you run although these changes have come💞
I lost my grandpa this year in April, I miss him so so so much this was his favorite song and they played at his funeral. I’m so sorry for you I know how it feels
Great song, great video and audio, thank you. This song is about his first car, a 1948 Buick Roadmaster. As a guy, my eyes water hearing this and thinking of my first car, a '65 Chevy Impala
It might be about a car... but this song they played in the lobby while Titus was put to sleep today. So for a while this will make me a blubbery teary mess when I hear it. Long may you run Titus!
+E Mikell Sorry about your dog....I have lost dogs to old age.....I believe God gives them to us, and when their time is up, He takes them back to a better place...
My favorite Neil Young song. (Not an easy choice). This could be a metaphor to an old friend. So typical NY. A simple sounding lyric that could mean so many things.
This is my favorite version of this song, with full harmony in verses as well as refrain. There's another version with harmony in refrain only, and that's great too, but this version is my favorite. Thanks for posting.
So many sad stories in the comments of Neil Young's songs. Sucks that the good die young. But its great that the good listen to Young. Its pretty rare you'll find a dislikes on them. Anyways though I hope that dudes in a better place. Hopefully there is another place. One life of Neil Young songs just wont cut it for me!

Did you realize the beginning of the slide guitar solo to isn't it a pity is used here twice. This means it's originally about George Harrison. Think about the first true guitarist who blew everyone away was George Harrison with the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show on January 9, 1964. Rest in peace George.
Even though I am a big Neil and CSNY fan, the first time I heard this was on youtube. For some reason it tore me up every time. Just tonight I think I figured out why; I lost a friend when we were 19 in a car accident, an '89 Camaro. I actually have the same car myself which is kinda my baby. Anyway, if you dig this song, check out Emmylou's cover of it, and if you like that, check out her and Sheryl Crow doing Lou Reed's "Pale Blue Eyes". :-)
Thanks for posting this! Lots of people appreciate you doing this, so ignore the trolls. I like the audio quality and it's nice to have the lyrics displayed so simply. Thanks again!

It took quite a few times listening this song but I finally got that it was about a car, keywords and phrases: CHROME heart, missed a SHIFT on the long decline, just for those that haven't got it yet
I am very sorry for your loss. I was curious, so I Googled the name you listed. Hopefully, you continue to heal from such an event. Carry Gia's memory with you, always!!!
I hope you are all better now. My brother in law is just starting chemo and a few people I work with have just gone through it. And my aunt who had colon cancer. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. This is a great song.
Bought my first car at 15 in 73 and I still have it in my 60's. Long may she run...
Played the day after my husband died and cried like a baby. I miss you Johnny boland.

"With your chrome heart shining in the sun"
Long May You Run..
Perfectly beautiful line he wrote💖
2022 and still listening this kinda song
"The Wonder Years" brought me here. As they towed the family station wagon away after it was deemed un-fixable, they played this song. It's one of the best episodes of the series.
**Spoiler Alert!!
Love the wonder years!
Me too ! Brilliant choice of song !
Long live kevin ! That was a great episode
that episode made me cry, letting an old car go is like losing an old friend.
This literally makes me cry. I love my car too much. '87 and still going. Long may he run...
When they are gone, there's no turning back. Last week, I was on a 9 hr drive home from a failed business partnership. Somewhere over Maryland, this song came on, and I could not hold it together. It was all for the better, but what a hard couple of days it has been.
Neil Young is one of the top music artists in the world
I think this one is the BEST song Neil Young ever recorded. My favourite for sure !
This is the best song written about a car.
I gave up my Alero for a new car yesterday. I have been crying on and off all week. It breaks my heart to give up my first car. It really feels as though someone died. That car was there for me when I had no one. God blessed me with her and she kept me safe for many years.

Just took the drive to take my late mum's car to the wrecker and this song came to mind 🥲🥰 It was emotional. Long may you run ✨️🌈🐚💖💝
My mom never had a car growing up. I bought her a little old Saturn I fixed up. Always ran strong for her and would only break down when I was visiting.
