@@VI_Radio_Guy Thanks! I just made my first contact on the Eastern Massachusetts 2m Traffic Net, one of the repeaters in Waltham, MA I've been listening to them while studying for the test. It feels good to have finally checked off a long time bucket list item. 73 to you!

I'm sure this is an excellent video, I just can't seem to find one that explains everything as if you were looking at a foreign object for the first time. Thank you.
36 - YES. I just got a radio and a license and have NO IDEA beyond that. This seems like a Level 2 or even 3 class. For example, using 5 radios just confuses things.
This was a fantastic video. As someone who started with Baofang seeing how these work in others help with understanding why you want something better and justify it (e.x. User experience)
M6KKW from 🇬🇧. Awesome shows (although to late for me to watch live), have learnt a lot and enjoy the humour. Just bought a T shirt as a thank you. Keep them coming.
I got licensed on 2017. My very first radio was a FT-60. I still have the radio and it is my go to radio when I travel. I do own a Baofeng but it never comes off the charger. I also have 2 DMR radios which I use one for every day when I am at home. I also have the FT-4XR. I like the size of the FT-4 but the FT-60 is the most easy and simple radio I have used to date.
On my newer UV-5R+ you don’t have to be in a particular band if you’re in Frequency Mode. You can just type in the frequency. However, on my original UV-5R, if you’re in Frequency Mode and try to enter a 70 cm frequency when the particular band is set to 2 meters, it won’t let you. You actually have to use the Band button to select the correct band before you can type in a frequency for that band.
thanks for your channel. I own a FT60 and it does have a dual watch. just press FV button and VM button. it will watch the home channel and any other you want.
Misery loves company, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with a noise floor that high all the time. Before someone tells me to do all the things that help you track that noise down, I think we have tried it. Now back to the video...
I recently got licensed and picked up a Yaesu VX-6. It's a nice radio but I wish I hadn't got it. I'm 20 miles from the nearest repeater and live in a hollow. There are some hams in town but apparently they don't monitor .52, I can't make a contact here to save my life. I did pick up one of Dr. Ed Fong's 2m antennas and mounted it on a 10' pole on my roof but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I've been told that this time of year the repeaters are pretty dead. Anyway..... having mounted an antenna and being tied to that I wish I had taken the money I spent on the VX-6 and bought a base or mobile with a lot more nuts. It would have been money better spent. That said, I like that I can take this HT camping and pick up a wide range of frequencies including weather and fm radio. Great video! Keep up the good work.
Good info. Now I can use my Kensu BaoCON much better. Nice local guy there on the repeater BTW. KC3PRU...hurry up FCC with that vanity call, this sequential one is a tongue twister.
As my first radio I purchased a TYT TH-UV8000D and I've only had it for less than a month. I cannot find ANY videos that help with programming it. Would it be possible for you to do a programming video on it or at least point me in the right direction? Thanx, I absolutely love your channel, it's been very helpful for a true noob.
Thank you for teaching about this very important aspect of emergency communications. Subscribed! I feel too old to learn ALL of this information. My old flip phone has more capabilities than I can use.
Most likely that is the “renegade” repeater out here. Most of the others are fairly civilized. There are some populated by OMs that are cranky. Just stay off those. Catalina is one I like. They have a nightly net that’s cool.
Newbie here. Can someone clarify this question? While in scan mode if I press the PTT button to stop scanning I would not actually transmit correct? 17:52
My hand held does not have numbers on it..the brand just says NVK and it stays on 22-i dont have a license so how do i get numbers to show up on the screen? does someone have to activate it? where do I go to get help?
So do you have to be a member to talk on repeaters? can they tell you to actually get the heck off and you have to listen or can you tell them to go somewhere and tell them off and keep on talking on it?
I really don't get why the threads would have a limited life unless your cross threading them a bit everytime your taking the antenna off and on. I could see the hole the pin goes in and out wearing slightly everytime you go in and out though. How many on and offs are we talking though that might start causing a problem? I've already taken my antenna off and on multiple times testing the stock antenna on my ft65r and a nagoya antenna I bought that made zero difference in recieve or transmit. I havnt noticed any degradation in signal strength when i put my stock antenna back on so thats good. Might try a diamond antenna eventually and see if that will give me a boost.
