I'm a traditional picture framer, my mentor is from northern Italy. Unfortunately the skills are dying out, especially with Canvas framing. Lots of people prefer the cheap powder coated frames which look quite dated after a year or too. My preference for stretcher frames are floating frames. Today's modern aesthetic of beige and khaki, ornate frames just don't work. However a raw timber floater helps the artwork transition into the decor. I've picked up some extraordinary moulding ( untouched) from the early 20th century. Art Deco and Art Nouveau and also some beautiful Victorian mouldings of real ebony, teak and mahogany. The framing business ii got them from had been trading for nearly 90 years but the last generation weren't interested in keeping the legacy going. The family just wanted to get rid of everything, of course the plain mouldings were snapped up but the antique stock was being ignored. I picked up a trailer full from $3 a metre. Hopefully i can find some artworks that will do these mouldings justice🦋
