Thank you for this inspiring video! I understand you paint without turpentine, but how do you clean the brush DURING the work session (for instance when you change the color)? Just a little oil and wiping the brush on a cloth?
@@squirrel8161 I make my own stack lead. It’s a dangerous chore. I recommend RGH paints if you’re interested in commercial paints. Their Cremnitz white is excellent . 👉🏼rghartistoilpaint.com/blacks-and-whites.php
Great video! How do you know how much oil to use in the imprimatura, to make the gesso have just the right absorbency? Trial and error? When I try to make this surface I often end up with either a too absorbent gesso, or a shiny surface due to too much oil. Thanks!
Thank you for commenting. The preparation of gesso requires the consideration of numerous factors. I recommend "Il Libro dell'Arte" by Cennino Cennini as a starting point. Follow the progression laid out in the book, from learning to prepare distemper paint to advancing towards making Gesso Sottile. I offer a semester course dedicated to this subject, which involves understanding many specifics, especially when using historical materials. Some companies, like Gamblin, do sell pre-made gesso, among many others, but they often add titanium dioxide. This addition makes the gesso excessively white and also alters the behavior of the gesso.

Hello! Thank you for commenting. I use the method that you described in your comment to avoid solvents.
that red madder lake.. there are several versions.. which one is the one you are using specifically?
Where are you getting your lead white? I would love to get my hands on some. I sometimes use lead tin yellow for skin tones, it’s the next best thing.
