I've been drawing this way for years, but whenever someone asks me "can you teach me how to draw", I've never been able to articulate it because I just go on "instinct" and experience. You are the first person that has been able to articulate this process for me so I can help others, thank you so much.
Well, u can so not teach anyone how to draw in the first place to begin with. Teaching drawing is like teaching someone how to ride a bicycle. That u can not teach neither. U can show it, u can give tips n tricks on how to do it, u can say do this and that, coordinate this and that, dot it all together at the same time then, but end of the day the person must teach himself how to ride a bicycle. quoted from Betty Edwards book Drawing on the right side of the brain...
Practice doesn't have to be expensive either, a handful of hb pencils, a couple of erasers and a pack of cheap copy paper would set you back around $6 and would last quite a long time. Just remember to keep a sample of your practice work in an A4 folder to look back on later.
your teaching is so comforting and reassuring, must people give up drawing because they often doubt themselves and they dont have directions, and the most tragic thing is, it's not their mistake for doubting themselves since their teacher simply sucks at teaching(those teachers only know how to draw by themselves, but they dont know how to teach).
The questions: 1. What's the biggest shape (of the subject matter)? 2. What is its axis? 3. How big should it be? 4. Where on the page should it (the subject matter) go? 5. What changes should I make?
oh my, i'm so excited now (not because of the music though) thinking of drawing my first 100 of every shape, training my hand, building muscle memory, getting faster without thinking. starting with shapes i can do, it doesn't scare me off, even though i understand how fundamental, how important this is. i have always tried skipping this important steps... love the 5 rules. thank you so much, Brent! got my eye on your book.
So happy to have found you Brent! What a marvelous instructor you are! The clarity and step-by-step hierarchy in your teaching and writing is perfect as I've just purchased your book and am following up each chapter with your videos as available on youtube. I've been drawing for many years with great success (in my 70's now) but have felt frustrated by my gaps in understanding process and purpose. Having found your guidance I'm excited to begin at square one 'in my learning' and move more easily into more self-generated creative drawings. A great big "THANK-YOU!" to you :) Mollie
I am only halfway through the video but have to comment: this is explained BRILLIANTLY! So often have I heard „draw the shapes“ and my drawings ended up looking like a child‘s geometry book 😣. This breakdown is incredibly helpful, thank you so much
Thank you so much for your effort. Your clear and simple instructions are really helping me and are exactly what I need to be motivated and positive as I often feel overwhelmed and don't know how or where to start or how to practice. Thank you again good sir.
I love when UA-cam algo brings me the gems like you. I loved the dramatic music, your step by step instructions, so helpful and entertaining. Thank you!
The process outlined in this video is very similar to progress with anything really. I'm a software developer from hobby and profession and asking questions and iteratively going forward is key too, refining each step when the overal process is outlined.
I also saw the analogy with drawing and the development of algorithms when I think about the questions, more than a methodology I see it as an algorithm following a series of instructions to solve a problem it is as if a computer will execute this algorithm and I am the one who executes this fascinating program
I’m currently doing your course on Udemy and love it. I’m learning so much and my drawing is improving massively. You’re an incredible teacher and artist. Excited to find you on UA-cam! Deep gratitude for sharing your talent 🙏
Thank you for this video, I have recently been working to improve my perspective and the way you described your process was just like a lightbulb going on in my head. I have always been able to draw pretty good just by looking at an object, but am really quick just to jump in without thinking. As I strive to become a better artist I am trying to slow down and think about the structure and shapes more. Thank you again for a helpful video. I look forward to exploring more of your other videos.
Hi teacher; greetings from Mexico, I'm really grateful with your courses, because the quality and passion of your work. Before this I was so lost in drawing, So I was resigned to throw in the towel... But now the things are different for me. So I'm very happy with my progress and I could not express in words my appreciation for your work. Thanks for everything you do, teacher.
Came here from Margot Hallac’s latest video, she recommended your drawing book and now I can see why! This is the kind of instruction that makes sense to me, and I am loving your teaching style! Off to draw hundreds of basic shapes byyyyeeee
Thanks I appreciate this I've been trying to draw on a bigger scale I have had to shift my picture a few times but I had already gotten stuck on detail before it was structured well.thanks it's in chalk and charcoal so I can make adjustments quite easily but it's another day or two work . You have beautiful drawings . foundations.👍
WOW, this is SUPER helpful. Thank you for your generosity. I have been to afraid to start. Today I drew a really good face for the first time (my previous efforts were terrible)
Thanks so much for this video, Brent!😁 It’s clear, insightful, and makes the whole process feel approachable. I’m curious-what’s the best way to spot those underlying basic shapes within more complex subjects? And how do you decide on shapes for objects that are more irregular or organic in form?
This is wonderful. I have never been able to draw - but I think I am going to give it a try, after watching this. Appreciating this thoughtful - and likely very useful - guidance. Cheers.
