- On Sunday 21 April 1991, the Owls stunned Manchester United to lift the Rumbelows Cup at Wembley Stadium.
Of course that wasn’t the only success for Wednesday in that campaign as Ron Atkinson’s side went on to secure promotion back to the First Division.

Ron Atkinson had a great record in the League Cup, lost in the Final with Man Utd in 1983, won it here with Wednesday, and would win three years later with Aston Villa again against Man Utd

im a man u fan (life long and season ticket holder) but actually lived in hillsborough for a a good few years. I have to say this wednesday team (to the delight of my many wednesday mates) were a class act. My parents also ran pubs in the area and many players, hirsty, sheri etc, would often drink in them. That David hirst was pure class.I was behind his free kick 1992 or 3 i think in the stretford end and I knew it was in before he took it. Class. The 3.3. at hillsborough on boxing day was a classic. I went with my pals and stood in the kop!!!!!! 3. nil down.....but we came back. Wednesday often had the better of us back then...how times have changed. Sad for the owls asd its a huge and great club

Still brings a tear at 39 years old now I always remember I watched it in living room with my dad one of few times we didn’t go out for the match etc my dad managed to get a ticket but gave it to my big brother and he never got to go Wembley with Wednesday despite life long fan,, I was 8 🥲
When Madden came on, he became at that time, the Oldest Player to play at Wembly.
Horrible afternoon - remember being cloudy and cold; was only 7 but remember that Sheridan goal like yesterday. Wednesday became a top team though in the last year of the first division and first year of the PL. Big Ron did us again in 1994 when he managed Villa.
Also confirming Ron Atkinson's record which Brian Moore & Jimmy Greaves mention in commentary. Man Utd finished 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 4th, so no lower than 4th in the table, not 8th as Brian Moore says. They did as he says won the FA Cup twice in 1983 & 1985, and lost the League Cup Final in 1983. Also reached the Cup Winners Cup semi-final in 1984
I think this was the first Wembley final I watched. I had not yet chosen my team (which turned out to be Liverpool) but I knew who I didn't like and I was thrilled with how this panned out.
Attendance for the 1991 Football League Cup Final was 77,612 fans.

Graham Taylor was watching. So why wasn't Nigel Pearson in the England squad? What a pleb! For me Pearson was the defence equivalent to David Hirst. Unsung hero. this was a Manchester United States that had and went on to beat some of the best teams in Europe.. but you look at the panel the commentators Gary lineker. The fans.Everybody else could see see what class he was apart from Graham Taylor... If you want to know how good Pearson was.
Also Lee Sharpe young player of the year transform the way United play. Insteps Ryan Giggs lol.... Must have been one of the most short-lived prospects of all time lol...

If Carlos had the squad watch this before the Playoff Final, well you never know. Any Wednesday Manager should have his squad watch this. These guys played their hearts out. Would love to know how Big Ron prepared for this, and what was said to the players. A lot of the tackles would be red cards in the rules of today's game
