  • As an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) resident I get tons of question on the specialty and WHY I am in medical school after graduating from dental school. OMFS is an incredible speciality that I am passionate about and so this video is a glimpse into what the residency is and the pathway I took to get there.

    Becoming an OMFS surgeon in the Netherlands works differently.
    If you get your MScMed/M.D. (6 years) first, You can get your MScDent/DDS/DMD in 3 years.
    If you get your MScDent/DDS/DMD (6 years) first, You can get your MScMed/M.D. in 4 years.
    After getting those 2 degrees, you can specialize in OMFS surgery (4 years).
    So in total it takes 13/14 years to become an OMFS surgeon. Getting your M.D. here is mandatory. I recommend going the 14 year route just because during your second degree you can work on the side as a dentist which in my opinion is a lot more fun than a non-specialized doctor.

    Great video! I was wondering, if for some reason, after finishing your OMFS program and getting your MD, you decided you wanted to be a neurologist instead (for example), could you match in that specialty? or does the MD the OMFS program provides you with only work for OMFS? And also, can you prescribe any kind of medication? Thank you!

    • @Sophie-gk1me

      Anyone with an MD can prescribe medication. :)

    • @Kencan254
      @Kencan254 4 роки тому +1

      Medical specializations require specific training and licensing. So, an OMF specialist has to undergo additional training to be licensed in a new specialty. There are many medical professionals who are licensed to prescribe medication - nurse practitioners, dentists, optometrist etc.

    I have a severe TMD problems since more than 4 years now and I have seen 9 maxillofacial surgeons here in India Mumbai basically the surgeon told me that my jaw joints are grinding against each other and I need a bilateral joints replacement surgery done but honestly speaking I am really scared of things that I have been told by the surgeons that I visited and that is one surgeon told me that even after this bilateral joints replacement surgery my jaw pain is not going to go away and another surgeon told me that if I get this surgery done might not be able to open my mouth at all as I can open a little bit right now though and yes it is really painful and also really hard for me to eat anything and then yes I happened to meet Dr Gary Warburton as he visited India Mumbai and he said that I needed a bilateral joints replacement surgery but at the same time he said that my bite is decent but my jaw joints are compensating with it and I just don't understand what should I do this kind of a situation as I am in a lot of pain right now. If you don't mind me asking you could you please make a video on TMJ / TMD problems as well it be very helpful for all of us please thank you lots of love from India Mumbai 🥰😘❤️
