  • Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a major role in supporting our mood. However, with dopamine, the trick is to maintain a proper balance. Too much dopamine wears out your pleasure centers, while too little can leave you feeling down. If you're curious where your dopamine levels lie, there are certain things you need to look for. In this video chat, Dr. Daniel Amen discusses the role dopamine plays in your body, how to tell if you have an imbalance, and how to optimize your dopamine level to keep you feeling at your best.

    When I first started taking vitamin d3 in larger doses it made a massive difference. My attention problems disappeared instantly. I had 3 very good days, then on day 3 I felt it all go down the drain again in a few hours. It was like dying. I'm guessing my brain just started compensating for the higher d3 levels.
    I've had similar experiences with iodine and quitting caffeine. It helps but only for a short time, then it becomes the new normal and the effects disappear.

    So interesting to see you when you are thinking, you look up. I did that as a child and I remember being yelled at and humiliated in front of my class when I was in second grade. The teacher said the answer isn’t in the sky … but for me it was. That embarrassed me and made me feel a lack of confidence in my own intelligence. It’s just wild the moronic, ignorant things that others can say that may effect your confidence & behavior. I worked hard not to look up when thinking or answering questions which I’m sure I was unnecessarily distracting my brain. I do see many of the most intelligent thinkers look up as they talk.

    Dopamine is also modulated in the hypothalamus and this involves gaba; relates to general physiological regulation (homeostasis), including brain activity auto-regulation/ autonomic NS & 'emotional regulation' (eg in ASD).
    Thank you for "sunshine Vit D raises DA". Now I know why I have always been dependent on sunshine and why cloudy/rainy days make me feel miserable and weak (not seasonal sad).
    I know the food thermogenesis effect and wonder if the connection of DA to appetite-for-energy-foods [rather than nourishing foods] lies also in the hypothalamic homeostatic regulation (a form of regulatory compensation for low metabolic energy).

      @Dr. Marika Bouchon how can we lower dopamine? I don’t have addictions but at times I feel irritable..

    • @drmarikabouchon7361
      @drmarikabouchon7361 Рік тому +1

      Hi @Lola C
      Irritability is not from high DA but from adrenaline which kind of steals the DA (both are catecholamines, as NE - all 3 in sympathetic
      N.S. ). DA is used up in >making Norepinephrine NE which is used up> in making adrenaline. To not be irritable, reduce Adr: 1 increase NE (focus, think, problem solve) or 2 better reduce also NE to keep more DA, which controls muscle tension. Sun & move physically, breathe, and you won't be tense, won't need to entrain the "highest" survival mechanism - adrenaline.
      Note: seeking the highs of DA in the brain's "reward center"
      is a common behaviour in large societies, but based on inadequate understanding of physiology.
      Those brain highs cannot compensate the irritability & sense that it's all to hard, even if they produce "joy". They only hide the problem of tension in the body, disconnecting head from it, and do not resolve the issue - why is it so hard. (Plus, in ageing this strategy causes a lot of structural deterioration in the body and brain).
      Other example: The inadequate understanding leads an anxious woman treated medically into becoming bipolar: worse agitation, not less agitation. DA highs are agitation in the brain, excitement. 2 sides if the same thing, nothing like calm unaffected by irritation.

    • @vanjacalantropo
      @vanjacalantropo Рік тому

      @@drmarikabouchon7361 thank you very much! This makes so much sense. I was told that in my case DA is not being converted to NE and epinephrine.. based on OAT results. I’m not sure if this is possible and what causes this lack of conversion but you are definitely right about adrenaline I think as my hr goes up in stressful circumstances. I’ll take your advice, thank you!!!

Alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs to make a habit / dependency out of. I can’t help but comment on the Title of the video “Dopamine imbalance “
    Fun fact taking adhd stimulant medication is a dopamine imbalance especially the short acting tablets, I can’t help but feel this can not be good for my brain long term, there is no worse feeling than the wear down on the drug which is feels like your 10 time worse than before you even start taking them.
    Is this something we have to put up with or can something be done about it???

    I obviously had too much dopamine by taking a choline supplement which made me unable to control binge eating abd felt immobilized and crabby. I had no clue choline raised dopamine. Finding that was my issue I cut back to the former amount I was taking of the choline 500 mg- where worrying over memory I had raised it to 1000mg...big mistake! Too much dopamine is dangerous! Only realized that was my issue as the choline caused insomnia so I cut back and then discovered choline raised dopamine causing the other issues..

    There seems to be a lot of similarities between low seratonin and low dopamine from listening to your YT vids. Both feel blaw... both need activity and sun light. Trying to track causes of waking up at night , if neurotansmittors or histamine or hormones (epinephrine..). Interesting ideas.

    Hi Doctor Amen, in 2008/2009 Doctor Sponaugle and I did a ABC Documentary and he sent me to your Herndon Clinic for Brain Scans. As a result it showed I am ADHD, OCD. Have Anxiety and Chronic Insomnia. My Brain makes too much Dopamine and too little Serotonin.
    I was put on Adderal, Zanex, Ambien, Seroquel. I want to know why Adderal works for me. Increase focus, motivation etc when I have such a over active Brain. I also need to figure out what I should take for sleep. Ambien doesn’t work by itself. I literally can go weeks without sleep and this is not healthy!! Help, Deborah Wade

    So what’s the take away.? I’m still not sure. If you’re not producing dopamine and you’re eliminating all the toxins and you still have a dopamine deficiency -- what do you do?
    Everything you talk about is based on the premise of toxins to the brain yet there are many people out there that suffer depression out of the womb. How do you treat the percentage of people with depression? I’m not talking about situational depression I’m talking about chronic depression?
