    The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - The Witcher 3 has a fascinating method of accounting for player choice. The vast majority of the time, every possible outcome is accounted for in one way or another. That isn't always the case though, as The Witcher 3 in particular disregards a handful of major choices players might have made in Geralt's past. That isn't necessarily a problem, but it's interesting to take a look at where CDPR has done this in the past, and think about how it may affect the future.

      might be the sole reason they picked him as the narrator

    • @nopin7
      @nopin7 2 роки тому +47

      This seems pretty likely, and I have thought the same thing because if you've noticed along with some of the narration, the journal entries are written in third person rather than Geralt writing about himself. It seems like there may be more specific examples, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Disregarding Shani going from Witcher 1 to 2 still makes me pretty unhappy even though I actually really like Triss in 2 and 3. For the record, I rather despised Triss in Witcher 1. I would be interested to hear thoughts on whether you think the shift in Triss's character was natural. I do find such a shift rather interesting, and now I have to think about how such character development fits with Triss from the books (that I also need to re-read, lol).

In W2 there's a little side quest in flotsam to take a mysterious potion from a couple of scholars, apparently if you port that save over to W3 a note appears on one of the benches in the oxenfurt academy which is the follow up log from the scholars. There’s a lot of comments about Iorveth so I’ll just say he was supposed to be in The Witcher 3 and the writers had a whole subplot planned for him revolving around the Scoia’tael and the Nilfgaardian army base at the bottom of the map.
    Unfortunately it was cut due to time constraints and the devs didn’t want to just throw him in the game with nothing to do so they cut him out completely.

    While Roche's endings being thrown away is painful, my headcanon is that he just does whatever is best for Temeria at the moment. W2 Radovid is actually not that bad, you have Foltest's daughter being prepared to be queen with Roche protecting her and Natalis being around, so they could keep Radovid relatively in check and work something for Temeria, but now, in W3 that he went nuts and Nilgaard is at the door, there is no way Radovid can be left alive if you think about Temeria's future

    • @kireta21

      Radovid has tendency to betray his allies once they're no longer of use. It's perfectly reasonable to assume Roche saw it coming, which is why he took his men inna forest, away from Redanian command, before they all end up like The Order of the Flaming Rose.

    Mass Effect also has a few things like this (although it is generally much better at acknowledging decisions in previous games). I think the problem is that they need to know in advance what information to save in order to keep it in the next games, and it's easy to miss things.

      Mass Effect even had to delete plot points, decision due script, time or simply they abandoned a certain topic to focus others. It's really difficult to create a game like that because some decisions can create plot holes or repercussions that are way more bigger to be handle in one game.
      In Mass Effect one of the most famous points is the "Dark Energy plot" presented in Mass Effect 2, the idea was to settle the argument for Mass Effect 3 around that but due development things that idea was ignored and the story went in another course but the plot is still there, with an amusing amount of theories and argumental implications that could've.

    Since I think the Witcher 4 is going be a totally new character with their own journey I think the one way i think a Witcher 3 save can be imported to the next game is with the three endings
    The worst ending would decide if there's a Geralt and Ciri cameo
    The Ciri Witcher ending would decide whether she is a Witcher that is talked about in the world
    And the last but not least the Empress ending where we could potentially meet our queen Ciri or read of her rule in the books

Wild Hunt ended with another Conjunction of Spheres the event that teleports monsters into the world. The short stories from the author have New Witcher Schools being created and some old ones resurging in popularity because of the Continent entering a colonial age exploring outside it's border to new lands filled with monsters on land and in the sea just a couple centuries later.
      CDPR can follow both of these up. Which makes sense with this New School of the Lynx to actually be new. If it's hundreds of years later too that is enough room in the timeline passing that none of the choices of 3 have major impact so they can tell whatever story they want. If Nilfgaard won the North regained independence a century later, If Radovid won doesn't matter a long dead dynasty the North created a new status quo, If Dijkstra won that was the point that the North would transform into something new.

I know the player has a choice here, but still funny how it doesn't carry over and gives you the choice a second time. I suppose it goes for the Order of the Flaming Rose as well, that their fate is doomed no matter what choice you make in W1.

On the other hand, as a longtime Dragon Age fan, I’m well aware of how hollow some callbacks can feel, particularly once you have the weight of three games-worth of decisions to wrestle with. It feels like something of a damned if you do, dammed if you don’t situation.

    There is also a major inconsistency between The Witcher 1 and 2/3. Radovid wouldn't need Anais, an illegitimate younger daughter of Foltest, when he is married to Adda, an older (albeit still illegitimate) daughter of Foltest. The argument is that 'Temerians will never accept a Redanian on the throne', but wouldn't Anais be also seen as a Redanian pawn if she is controlled by Radovid?

    You know how many characters from earlier games either appear in later games or are mentioned in some way, but I can think of a character that is never ever mentioned: Yaevinn. Canonically, he must be dead, but why no mention at all?

    I could swear i saw somewhere that your romance status affected the inventory item icon for the rose of rememberance (if you had active romance with triss it was blooming but if you stoped it it was withered tho dialogue always mentions it being dry. That would mean it has at least a little part in the code. However i was unable to find the video mentioning it so i am not 100% sure anymore.

    I think Yen is hypocritical. Everyone around him knew about her. They didn't tell him. And he thought she was dead after he did remember. Triss took advantage. Everyone basically lied to him. But that's just my take.

    This is actually a complex issue to address and CDPR has handled it well, but not perfect imo.
    Firstly, our decisions HAVE to have consequences, otherwise everything we decide is just meaningless. But, with the many consequences and narratives possible in Witcher games (which i think are a big part of what makes the games as great as they are and are really, really good) it's obviously impossible to account for all possible choices in a follow-up game. Therefore, they have to decide on a canon path that Geralt took, which they do to some degree and i think is quite appropriate.
    What i really dislike, is when they skirt around a topic, like Radovid's wife for example. They absolutely need to pick a storyline and stick with it and account for player decisions as often as they can. Just not mentioning it at all, just makes the initial decision meaningless, as if you did nothing at all, which i think is the worst way to go in this.

    Excellent video. I remember being mind blown by Witcher 2 after a few playthroughs. The various branching choices completely changing the middle and end events. This was long before 3 was even confirmed and I just thought holy shit, they're setting it up so much for a follow-up game, finding Yen etc. How in the hell are you going to compensate for all the endings which massively affect all the kingdoms' power and influence. Thought it was impossible to account for, or consolidate the open threads but they did it really well. So I will forgive a few of the more 'out there' uncharacteristic ending options bring scrapped.

  • @VAustin89
    @VAustin89 2 роки тому +8

    Even the choices from 1 to 2 had that issue, like Radovid's need to have Foltest's bastards, if you saved Ada, Foltest's death in 2 wouldn't be that much of a cluster fuck since Ada was a legit successor and Redania could have just swooped in. Also I sometimes encounter a bug/glitch were Sile is still alive in the dungeons even if you allow her to die in Witcher 2.

    • @efaristi9737
      @efaristi9737 2 роки тому

      Foltest justify it by saying that the old nobles families of Temeria would never accept a redanian for king. And also, she was a monster that eat peoples... Twices, that doesn't help.

    The saskia comic is basically for people who sided with saskia. If you did then it takes place after the ending of the game. It also hints at what happened in vergen as well. Apparently the fight didn't end well as saskia encountered not just soldiers but also a witch possibly frangilla vigo. She lost the fight and all the leadership of vergen was executed.

    This reminds me of how in Mass Effect 2 Conrad Verner no matter what will treat Shepard like they used the renegade options with him in the first game, but that was a bug in the save system so Conrad will only act one way. So they made fun of this discrepancy in Mass Effect 3 by having Conrad apologize and be uncertain if Shepard ever assaulted him.

    About mentioning Saskia. There's another quest in Witcher 3 where she's mentioned. If you spared her, then you can mention that as proof of you being a friend to monsters, in the quest where a werewolf, Doppler and troll conspire to kill you in Skellige

    • @flamesofchaos13

      Only the Werewolf wanted to kill Geralt...The Doppler, Troll and Godling just wanted to scare/intimidate Geralt. Remember Godlings have the mind of a child and Dopplers are pacifistic. Trolls are just dumb sometimes dangerous sometimes drunk.

  • @ohlambert3562

    a very nice video, as always! thank you!
    one thing we should think of in this matter is that series of the games that actively use gamers' choices to progress through the plot of the game *must* choose somewhat *true* ending so that they could make the next game. it automatically means giving up all other endings and mark all other choices as non-canon. witcher 3 had to give up some plotlines to tie everything together, leave behind some [/cough/ female] characters. so that's completely fine for me you can't have everything at one time. we got Shani and that's so much more than we could hope for.
    another thing that I think about a lot is how f_cked up first witcher game was. and the second one was only slightly better if you think about it. I think cdpr just realized that first two games were very poorly made in comparison with the third game they were making so they left them behind hoping no-one will really remember them. and they bring out the events happened in the first (and second) game very rarely too as if they reeeeally wanted them to be long forgotten lmao. (and honestly witcher 1 wouldn't survive a day in the world we know today). also, the plotline doesn't seem to go anywhere good in these two games too while saving Ciri is always a win.
    maybe it's even better for them to stay in the shadow, I don't want cdpr to be cancelled lmao.
    so, yeah, I'm glad cdpr made their homework, learned from their mistakes and improved witcher series in every possible way to bring us witcher 3. I respect and love them for that.

    The whole thing of not taking into a count some choices/finals of previous games could be a hint on how CDP RED works and may disprove the theory that alla Witcher 3 finals are true at ones, but with some weeks between one another

    • @SADYT-be5qe
      @SADYT-be5qe 2 роки тому

      Honestly, after seeing tht theory and the announcement of a new Witcher game i was thinking tht they (CDP RED) could integrate the various finals and choices in the new hame by making canon this theory (tht all of the three finals are true at once), i mean tht would simply their writing work and would close some unsolved matters (like Weaves, the third Crone)
      But!
      Now i'm starting to doubt abt it, maybe they will choose one final, the one tht suits more the characters 🤔

    if you take in consideration how Radovid acts in the third game, I don't suppose Roche's hypothetical betrayal would be unlikely. as he said: "my true colors are on my skin, that will never change" which could imply that when Radovid started acting awry he would just defect and start over with the Temerian Guerrila. would be great for it to be mentioned in dialogue though since it is not that ridiculous of a concept in my point of view.

    I guess you could summarise Roche's turn towards assassination as 6 months of living what it would be like under Radovid. I'm glad its not canon as helping him with Anais is but for those who chose to help Radovid in TW2 I'm thinking that Radovid's mental instability which is mentioned by Roche in the 3rd game is the kicker.

I never imported any saves but I doubt I would have remembered what I did in a previous game anyway. I only remembered some of the bigger stuff. The only other games I that I have played that import from previous games - Mass Effect and Dragon Age - also have a few instances where they retcon something that you've done (but not as much as in the Witcher series from the looks of it.)

    Roche betraying radovid after joining redania isn't that farfetched. Roche always held his ideals over his duty, I mean he freed you after the whole of temeria set their sights on you when foltest dies. In some of the flavour dialogue with Roche he says himself that he's an idealist, and that the only thing he really cares about, is a true and free temeria.

    PLEASE make a video about the lesser known imported choices. The wiki has such a tiny list of differences that our choices actually make from TW2. I had no idea about the subtle dialogue changes in minor quests. Also things like the mage hiding in the morgue(?) who mentions the slaughter at Loc Muinne must be different depending on your choices.
    It really bothers me that Roche flat out tells Geralt "I don't trust anyone, not even you" despite the fact that you could have sided with him, let him kill henselt, proceed to take the blame for said killing when Radovid asks, form such a strong bond with Roche and yet he still says that line regardless. It's choices like those that make chronological playthroughs so special, but unfortunately I prefer siding with Iorveth nowadays because it seems to flow into the third game much better (Despite always siding with Siegfried in the first game).
