It was a great team. Still baffles me how they lost the opening match 1-4. There was so much talent on that team. And who knows what they could have done had they made it past this one. Which absolutely could have happened.

Never thought this would be the last time I would watch an international tournament football match as a football fan. No, I did not die, but my country had.
How so? Argentina were current champions, we had Diego and a great team spirit. I guess our best game was in that SF. As a kid, I remember it was hard though to watch a whole game, we'd rather go out and play ourselves. Not a joy to the eye 😂
Just to let you know. I was in Italy for 3 weeks supporting Yugoslavia with bunch of my friends. Since we cross the border we share with Italy wee were surprised how much of the support and sympathy we received from Italian people. One thing they all were united at was the hatred they had against Maradona. In Firence that day was super hot day. Like plus 40, not easy to play. We were about 10.000 fans from Yugoslavia and Argentina had about 4.000 fans. The rest were mostly Italian people and they were as one cheering for Yugoslavia. I want to thank them this way. From our first game in Milan against Germany all Milan's fans were with us. In Verona against Spain same story, we felt like at home. Thanks neighbors.

The referee helped Argentina by cancelling it a goal : he prefered leading Argentina to penalties instead of making available the goal so he could help Argentina during the penalties and asked Maradona and Troglio fail their own after fixing that 3 yugoslavians will fail their owns, so he managed to hide the fact that he helped Argentina .You are a genious 🤓

Yugoslavia played with 10 players for 90 minutes and they were still the better team. The referre unjustly helped Argentina not to loose in the regulation time, so the fix was on to help Argentina to play in the final.
fix how? if they could have won, they WOULD have won, they had their chances. You can see in the first play a CLEAR penalty to Caniggia that the referee did not call. If anything it was fix for Yugoslavia. And the guy was RIGHTFULLY sent off, it would have been an Scandal if the ref hadn't shown ihn the red. And to top it all, he invalidaded a goal for "handball" for argentina in extra time, which wasn't handball. Any team that played against Argentina in 1990 world cup, didn't deserved to lose the match,be it Russia in group, Brazil in Prequarter finals, Yoguslavia in quarter finals, Italy in semi finals. The Argentine played the whole tournament in a very dour and boring style, they committed lot of fouls on the opposition players, infact few of them were lucky not to be shown Red Card! In a nutshell,a very clumsy bunch of players, totally in contrast to team of 1986!

@@caliboy09 yes, they did! a dirty play, but that is nothing compared to the corruption of the high commands of the FIFA that were clearely (and later confessedly) trying to kick off Argentina and Maradona from this world cup. Everybody speaks about the tranquilizers but no one mention this kind of things that are worse. Brazil with a much better team, with maradona in one foot, and with referee´s BIG help couldn´t even equalize the game. Argentinian players and staff with time confessed they all knew that they were targeted for elimination, so they had to use any method to survive. One can argue if that is right or wrong, but never fall to the victimization of the brazilians whose FIFA president swore never to let argentina equalize brazil in number of wc trophies.

@@jptributer I am a huge admirer of that team. As I said their toughness, resilience and mental strength was incredible and that’s what got them to the Final. In terms of quality, sorry but they were a poor side and had been in decline since 86. Maradona was a shadow of the player he had been in Mexico. They’d won 5 games out of 26 going into the tournament (including a 7 game run when they couldn’t score)… then scored 5 goals in 7 games in the World Cup. They scraped through the group, had unbelievable luck against Brazil, needed penalties to get past 10 man Yugoslavia. On the other side Maradona was (by far) the most fouled player in the tournament, Caniggia was practically snapped in half by Cameroon, their goalkeeper Pumpido broke his leg in the second game, Italy’s goal in the semi final was offside and, as you say, a terrible penalty decision cost them the final. So they certainly had a lot of bad luck too. But they weren’t a great team.
@lordsummerisle3139 I hear all your points, but at the end if they were poor or great it's subjective. Did you see maradona's ankle throughout that WC? To me it's greatness that he could still lead them to the final. Against Italy they play their best game, worthy of a WC champions, yes they were intermittent throughout the tournament, but it's understandable given the context, injuries, suspensions, bilardo's tactics. They played the final with only half the 1st team and some even played injured, like ruggeri who only play the first half and he was huge for the team. Desotto played his only game in the final. Look at France the last WC, they were dominated by England, Morocco and Argentina and still they almost won it. Playing pretty is not the only way to play, to many, playing with courage and never giving up it's greater than playing pretty. So agree to disagree. They could have and should have won that WC if it wasn't for FIFA/Referee. That shows to me how great they were even if they didn't play pretty. It's like calling Simeone's atletico not great when they won the league against barca and real and reached CL final just because you don't like how they play.

@@caliboy09 yes, they did! a dirty play, but that is nothing compared to the corruption of the high commands of the FIFA that were clearely (and later confessedly) trying to kick off Argentina and Maradona from this world cup. Everybody speaks about the tranquilizers but no one mention this kind of things that are worse. Brazil with a much better team, with maradona in one foot, and with referee´s BIG help couldn´t even equalize the game. Argentinian players and staff with time confessed they all knew that they were targeted for elimination, so they had to use any method to survive. One can argue if that is right or wrong, but never fall to the victimization of the brazilians whose FIFA president swore never to let argentina equalize brazil in number of wc trophies.

@@jptributer I am a huge admirer of that team. As I said their toughness, resilience and mental strength was incredible and that’s what got them to the Final.
In terms of quality, sorry but they were a poor side and had been in decline since 86. Maradona was a shadow of the player he had been in Mexico. They’d won 5 games out of 26 going into the tournament (including a 7 game run when they couldn’t score)… then scored 5 goals in 7 games in the World Cup. They scraped through the group, had unbelievable luck against Brazil, needed penalties to get past 10 man Yugoslavia.
On the other side Maradona was (by far) the most fouled player in the tournament, Caniggia was practically snapped in half by Cameroon, their goalkeeper Pumpido broke his leg in the second game, Italy’s goal in the semi final was offside and, as you say, a terrible penalty decision cost them the final. So they certainly had a lot of bad luck too.
But they weren’t a great team.
@lordsummerisle3139 I hear all your points, but at the end if they were poor or great it's subjective. Did you see maradona's ankle throughout that WC? To me it's greatness that he could still lead them to the final. Against Italy they play their best game, worthy of a WC champions, yes they were intermittent throughout the tournament, but it's understandable given the context, injuries, suspensions, bilardo's tactics. They played the final with only half the 1st team and some even played injured, like ruggeri who only play the first half and he was huge for the team. Desotto played his only game in the final. Look at France the last WC, they were dominated by England, Morocco and Argentina and still they almost won it. Playing pretty is not the only way to play, to many, playing with courage and never giving up it's greater than playing pretty. So agree to disagree. They could have and should have won that WC if it wasn't for FIFA/Referee. That shows to me how great they were even if they didn't play pretty. It's like calling Simeone's atletico not great when they won the league against barca and real and reached CL final just because you don't like how they play.
