Or use drywall primer sealer
I'm a finisher for my personal house I took all purpose wet it down like paint rolled it on with a roller and pulled it tight with with my knife I did that 2.sanded it.. smooth as glass...
Doing it your way and Pauls!
What primer did you use after the skim coat?
Just use soft mud for the skim coat im a finisher and painter so i know both very well and soft mud on a skim coat doesn’t flash through primer and if it does the touch up is minimum
That makes perfect sense.
Thanks Paul -- I've learned a lot from your vids (and put that knowledge to use successfully on my own drywall projects).
That’s awesome Jay!👏🏻 I really appreciate your feedback and support man.😎 -Paul
Paul is simply the best.
I learned to use "dirty water" from cleaning drywall tools, mixers, etc and using a roller to roll the dirty water on the drywall paper. It turns out pretty smooth. My basement looks like glass. 🇺🇸🤘☺️
We don't texture walls in my area, but what a lot of pros know is that it would be just adding an unnecessary cost to most jobs by skim coating new board. What you are talking about is changing an industry standard. If I were to do it, my jobs would cost more for no real reason. If it's flat and flashing through the paint, the problem is the paint.
It has been an industry standard for areas with critical lighting… “Joint banding, or photograph-ing, is a condition in which areas of a drywall surface that have been treated with joint compound show through with color and sheen variations after painting. This condition is caused by the differences in surface texture and suction, or porosity, characteristics of the finished joint compound and
drywall face paper
The best technique for minimizing perceived surface defects under critical lighting conditions involves the application of a skim coat of joint compound over the entire surface after conventional finishing of all drywall joints and fasteners. Skim coating will fill imperfections in joint work, smooth the paper texture, and provide a uniform surface for decorating.”

@@PaulPeck Yes, they recommend it for 'critical lighting conditions', they give examples in that article. Like on a wall by a door light where the sun hits the wall at a sharp angle and exaggerates imperfections. Many pros call this a level 5 finish they can use when needed/requested, it's not the industry standard. Adding whole wall skim-coating and sanding generally, is not cost effective or recommended.
Basically a level 5 finish.
Yes paul but we painters now have products that negate the need for skim coating by tapers. Good video though.
Don’t even say . Level 5 spray . That crap is garbage and doesn’t fill holes . Nothing beats the original skim coat
@@gerryhazelton9569 AND compound is cheaper than the new products. Consistency of material is key and skim coating gives the best appearance regardless of paint finish or colour or lighting. Thanks Gerry!
The Chinese drywall expert Guy 😁😁😁😁😁😂😂
That’s why you Gotta make sure to put a nice heavy coat of PVA drywall primer on there before you paint even if your paint has primer mix with it you still have to prime the bare drywall first with PVA primer. That gets rid of the flashing
Great tip sir!
I really appreciate that Pete!💥👊🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend.😎 -Paul
@@PaulPeck no problem! I learn more every time!
Agree
Yea 7000 sq ft.
Just use first coat from USG it has mud in the primer
Or you can primer before you paint to prevent flashing
You'll never see flashing when you use flat paint
True. But, I’m a big fan of using a sheen in bathrooms, simply because of moisture and mold issues that can arise with a flat paint and it’s not as cleanable.👍🏻
Its called a painters level 5
Good video 👍 does the skim coat finish need to be sanded . Or do you put it on just right and just go back and knock down imperfections with the sanding ? I have lots of windows and totally agree on how even with a good primer and paint oftentimes ya can see things . If this makes that not happen it’s worth it imo .
Almost like reason people like plaster no sanding . That’s why I asked if this skim is put on so well as to negate sanding
Or prime the drywall to seal paper and mud
Noted
isn't priming the solution for flashing?
Great content.
I’m looking at starting my own plastering buissness.
Do you have any content on quotes and charging per day or hour.
Keep up the great work.
I am a self employed plasterer. I dont do much drywall because my area is mostly lime plaster finishes for new home construction. I will use a rough estimate formula of square feet of home × 4.2 × price per square foot or on smaller projects i like to bill around $1200 per day.
Don't listen to him
Ya you got to skim coat drywall if it looks like that
No
🙌🏿👀
👍👍👍
Anyone that is involved in construction already knows this. That looks way too thick. Thin the mud, roll it on and cut the time in half.
If you're an actual good finisher , you don't need to skim coat smooth walls. You're basically just admitting you suck at your own job. Flashing is referred to spot priming or touching up drywall and then priming the sanded spot , it'll flash if you don't paint enough or all of the wall to hide the repair or touch-up. Please learn before you misinform people. You only need to skim coat if you are repairing, patching or blending in and on ceilings if you are scraping off popcorn or texture.
It's crazy they make a product called primer. But go ahead a waste all that time skim coating...smh... But yo each their own
That's why you put on 2 Coats of paint oh my God this guy is crazy
Sure…😂
👍👍
