I'm a 65 year old DIY lady! Retirement has allowed me the time to do a bunch of home improvement projects. This is a terrific DIY video. I removed the dreaded popcorn from my walk-in closet. Except for the joints, there is bare drywall. I practiced putting the skim coat on with a trowel, but now that I learned this handy trick, I'll be using your roller technique. It will save so much time. I am grateful. Thank you!!🔧🔨🪚🧰🗜🛠🔩
Thank you! since watching this video series. I've done two whole bedrooms, and skimmed a big hallway and a bigger entrance way, and the home owner was super happy with the results on all jobs .
Looks great, tip from one pro to another since we never stop learning,I use a 18in nap gets the job done twice as fast and holds a lot more so no need go over multiple times like you did here
I have learned a few things on the UA-cam channel, but this one takes the cake. I have never been too good at drywall and mudding but I had to try this method. I am preparing my mom's house to put up for sale and watching the money spending is of high concern. The job entailed the removal of a lot of liquid nail which is what was used to install cork panels on the plaster walls. Using an angle grinder to grind down the liquid nail still had a surface way to rough for painting. Following the instructions in the video, I began to see results almost immediately. I will be doing a very little sanding tomorrow, priming then paint. BOOM.. done. Thanks Paul.
I'm planning on fixing up my grandmother's house for her by myself and with so much work needing to be done I'm glad for totourials like this one to better understand what needs to be done.
I am in the same boat. My grandmother's house needs a ton of work. I often get overwhelmed. I repaired some holes in the wall that stick out pretty bad so I'm hoping that this will help hide them.
Hey Paul, just wanted to let you know how much this and other videos helped me. I joint compounded over dry wall paper glue after many failed attempts at other routes. my family is blown away given I am extremely amateur at DIY home services so just wanted to thank you!
Your other videos proved very helpful! Cutting drywall larger and trimming it smaller while keeping the front paper for the seams is like magic! Made my repairs much easier!
So happy 😊 I found this video. We bought this home and didn't notice to degree of nasty texture then. Now we see we have the worst textured walls throughout our whole home!! I can only afford to do it myself but now I feel I have an answer or an option to start fixing it. I thought we'd have to re-drywall to get rid of it. Thank you.
Thanks for the pro tips. Me, a DIY'R , small scale repairs at our beach vacation rental homes, on joint cracks at ceiling, outside corners, surface damage repairs before repainting walls. Really enjoy watching professional work, and utilizing your tips on a smaller scale than what you do on a daily basis.
Dear Paul, I thought I would try this technique to skim coat one of my Mom's bathroom walls today since she doesn't want the texture that is there. I was expecting to be monkeying with it all afternoon to try and figure it out. I was SHOCKED when I was done with the actual rolling and smoothing in half an hour! It took me longer ti clean up than to actually do the job!! Thanks a bunch👍👍
Just bought a 100-year-old house and I’m considering DIYing some drywall repairs. I am a total beginner with drywall, but your videos make me think I can handle it!
This is an AMAZING video for trades/newbies/DIYers. Never seen a drywaller do the paint roller trick! Thank you! (interior inspecting/foremen experience with DIY hands on experience.)
Hi Paul This video is MOST HELPFUL to get rid of our textured small bathroom! A couple of quick questions please 1) Is a mold-control joint compound recommended for the bathroom? 2) Would it be necessary/useful to joint tape the corners while skimming? Many Thanks Again!
I have a TX 90 that i had rebuilt and i spray then wait 5 min and skim with a razor sharp 10 . Been doin this for 25 yrs and i like your method for small jobs .
Right on man!😎 I’ve sprayed it on with my RTX 1500 and it worked too. But yeah for small jobs it’s just easier to skim it out by hand. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!👍🏻 -Paul
I skim coated by concrete basement walls with joint compound. Two thick coats and a lot of sanding. Cost comparison between skim coating and framing. 10 buckets of joint compound $160. If I framed my 2400 square feet basement; $9000. Painted my ceiling flat black. Cost $200. Savings over framing $6000. I have access to all my plumbing and electrical.
Thank You!!! Before watching this video - I failed miserably! Mud everywhere - uneven application After watching this video - almost perfection! There should be a word for the feeling of skim coating and it's all even! The technique in this video work!!! **I wonder if this would work for the sides of cabinets. Not the face but the side that is next to the wall to smooth out the wood grain.
That’s awesome man!👍🏻 I really appreciate the feedback!🔥 Does the side of the cabinet have a clear finish on it? Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Oh yeah it was been doing this since I first stated painting 35 years ago this is an old old way of skim coating he shouldn’t call it his way like he invented it But I’m sure he’d be the first to admit that seems like a nice guy
Great job.. only thing i might recommend is use a tripod.. almost got a little dizzy watching this . .... but great job with describing as you went along...

@@danielschroer7766 chill out brother I am not a contractor or do not do it for a career. Every single house I have remodeled and flipped I have done this and it has never been an issue with a potential buyer.
I really enjoyed your series of videos for beginners. I am not sure if there is a video of yours that shows how to skim coat a wall that was repaired poorly and not sanded correctly, if at all. If you already have a video that addresses these issues, would please would you pass along the link, thank you. Rick
I wish I found your videos 6 months ago. I recently bought a home and all the walls have a hideous paint job. Way to much orange peel. I am using the term orange peel because I've sanded and painted cars. My answer to the walls was to sand the latex paint, prime and repaint the walls. So I bought one of those long sanders designed for drywall with a 9" sanding disc to start sanding the walls smooth. I just started sanding one wall and had to move to 80 grit to try and smooth the paint. It looks like I'm getting close to the drywall paper. What is your advise on what to do with latex painted walls with a nasty orange peel finish? Do you have any videos with sanding techniques? Thank you!

Great Videos. Super helpful. Question: we have a drywall crack across 2 rooms in our house. The ceiling has a knocked down texture. We tried to patch it tape and joint compound and then tried to match the knocked down texture, but it didnt go well. The ceiling appears not level and the patch does not match. -Should we cut the gyp out and try to level it and rematch the adjacent surface? -Or rip out the tape? -Or completely skim coat the entire ceiling and make it smooth? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Lico, hmmm... that’s a tough one since I can’t see the repair. Maybe try and remove tape, retape and retexture. But skim coating and adding all new texture will be the best looking solution at this point. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!👍🏻 -Paul
I'm no pro but I'm an investor in Texas so I'm familiar with drywall cracks. What you're describing sounds like it's probably a foundation issue, so the housing material is being warped. That's exactly what I'm used to. What I'll do (if fixing the foundation isn't critical) is cut a clean rectangle around the Crack, being sure to go about two inches past the Crack. Then I'll place a small piece of 4x1 inside the hole I made, spanning the Crack. If it's a large Crack, I'll put one every two feet. If that's hard to imagine, then think of the 4x1s as rungs on a ladder. Except you'll have the widest side facing you. I then secure the 4x1 pieces I added to the existing drywall using drywall screws. Now I have a wide platform to attach new drywall to. I'll cut my new drywall patch roughly to size, place that into the cutout I made, and then secure THAT to the "ladder" of 4x1s using drywall screws. If the fit is tight, I don't use tape. But if I'm using a scrap or for some reason I have gaps I can stick two quarters between, I'll caulk it and rub it smooth with a damp finger. And if for some reason I have a larger gap, then I'll use tape. I really try to avoid taping over a patch because it's nearly impossible to hide the "hump." Most people will either never notice or not care, but I do... Once I've dealt with the gap issue, I mud over the surface, extending out about 5-24" from the edge of the hole I cut, depending on the method of patch. Patch with or without caulk usually only needs 5-7 inches at MOST, usually less if you're re texturing. A patch with tape will need 18-24 inches from every edge to blend. Assess the lighting in the room to determine how much blend you need. If the Crack is on a vertical wall, floor lamps and single ceiling lights will make it shadow. But recessed led ceiling lights may cast enough light that it's invisible. A ceiling patch is the hardest to hide, and I find that almost every time I use tape, it's visible.
Hey 🖐 Paul! We can always count on you for great helpful tips, but I could *never* skim coat a ceiling for 2 very good reasons...😄 Im afraid of any kind of Heights. ...and 2nd, The awkard position would make me very Dizzy! 😄...there's possibly a 3rd reason..being that all the paint would end up on my head and none on the ceiling!😫 So, i would call the pros for this one, but Tfs! Paul, I was so glad to discover this video because I just started to work on my neighbors' living room walls and noticed that the first layer of drywall paper on one wall tarted to lift where there was a joint seam. I will remove as much of the first layer as possible and then use the Gardz product by Zinsser before skim coating.
You mention using a 3/4" lambskin roller cover. Three questions: 1) Some others who use this method suggest using a 1 1/2" roller. Would anything between 3/4" to 1 1/2" be acceptable or is 3/4" the best way to go? 2) I'm not seeing "lambskin "roller covers offered. I assume lambswool would be just as acceptable?. 3) Do you recommend any specific brands to go with for the roller? Thanks for the informative videos and your feedback.
I've had a problem with a couple skim jobs I've done where I get lines in my mud while skimming. It's not lines from putting too much pressure on one side of the knife it's like a line where it completely pulls the compound off the wall in random spots but in a line.
Nice you dont have a ceiling so the follow through is so much easier lol . I have to do this wall from hell the textering looks like waves really ruff . Going to have to knock down all the high spots first then go from there. Did one condo like this already took multiple coats 😭
Hey Paul! Your videos helped me skim coat my damaged walls and they now look beautiful….however, we got mud on the popcorn ceiling and now have bright white spots on the ceiling. Anyway to clean that up? We tried a wet cloth/paper towel before it dried but its still noticeable. The skimmed walls look amazing tho! Thank you!
Where is part 2 of this? This is a great video, We are doing and accent wall and have the scrubbable kid proof paint on knock down finish. We hate it. I’m assuming I need to sand it first for mud to adhere?
Dude! I’m a 100% beginning and just redoing my small kitchen and hallway. Never did drywall before. So far after the first coat it’s working great! I don’t have patience so waiting for another coat is going to be tough! Does it have to be perfect if a buddy is doing a knock down texture on it? Thanks for making this vid!
Absolutely. Just make sure to scrape off any loose paint etc. You also might want to look into an adhesive-type paint that allows for the compound to stick on the wall easier to prevent cracks in the future.
hey is there any particular prepwork required for skimming a painted wall? should the existing paint be scuffed/sanded for proper adhesion, or is it ok to skim compound right over existing paint
I appreciate you showing these tips but might I suggest a tripod for your camera, hard to see the wall not to mention I'm getting seasick bobbing up and down like that. Keep up the very lnformative videos. Thanks!
Is there any reason why I can't use this same joint compound for my plaster walls? I know it's for drywall, but I'm not replacing wall... just filling in the textured areas.
Nice video, Why dont you try +3 light weight that's all I use when roller coating/skimming and a synthetic roller sleeve 3/4 -1 inch just holds more mud. Sometimes I will put some dish soap in the mud helps keep the bubbles down especially if I am going over duro bond ..keep posting love this stuff
Right on TainT!👍🏻 I appreciate you sharing your experiences using different products and techniques.😎 I need to try the +3 for sure. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend! -Paul
Great video thank you. I just bought a house and every single wall needs it. My question is do you need to prep the walls from previous paint etc... before applying the compound. Thank you. Pascal
Hi Pascal, If it’s just painted drywall, you can skim coat right over it with the all purpose joint compound without any prep. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul
Hi Brooke, I usually just take switch and outlet covers off. Then cover the actual switch and outlet with tape to keep the joint compound out. Here’s a video that shows how I handle the corners when skim coating walls: ua-cam.com/video/jeGWbgAUvCM/v-deo.html I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
DIYer here! About to start skim coating over textured walls to get smooth walls in my house. Did you sand at any point in this process? Also, if doing the ceiling can you use the same joint compound that is being used on the walls? When the skim coating is complete, do you have a recommended primer to apply before painting? Thanks!
Good for beginners, to keep it even. What ever you do roller or knife you are working the mud.Do you pull side to side for 2nd coat? Slung mud and painted 30 yr,my shoulder is shot. Keep it tight fellas.
Great videos. I have a question. My walls have a orange peel texture and looks like they never been painted. Can I skim coat like you showed or should i wet it and scrap it off to bare drywall? Really dont like the orange peel at all. Thanks
You made it look so easy. I, on the other hand, looked like I was on a episode of renovation realities. Hopefully this next coat will be the last one. Problems I had were the knap on the roller flattened out over time. Also, when "smoothing" it out with the 12" knife sometimes I would do fine not leaving streaks, other times I'd get streaks on both sides. I think I read somewhere in the comments you are only supposed to be knocking down the high spots. Does that mean I don't have to go over the entire wall with the knife? Thanks for the help!
Ok, who did the down-vote .... Booooooo! I bought a house built in 1935 last year and the walls show all that age. I did not know how I was going to tackle them until I came across your videos. Thank you for sharing and I expect I will be a master skimmer by the time I am done. Paul, what would you suggest I do for fine cracks? Should they all be taped? For a house as old as it is, I was pleasantly surprised that cracking is at a minimum throughout.
I've seen this a few times before in Asian countries, first time seeing It done across the pond though. Different kind of skimming, great trick for DIY though I suppose
Good video! Good technique, it'll save time. My question is: if you have a wall, previously painted with interior flat paint, should I sand it lightly prior to the skim coating for a better adherence? Thanks!
If I need to skim coat the ceiling and walls to get rid of orange peel texture... which do you recommend I start with first? Ceiling? And do I use the same technique?

Would anything between 3/4" to 1 1/2" be acceptable or is 3/4" the best way to go? 2) I'm not seeing "lambskin "roller covers offered. I assume lambswool would be just as acceptable?. 3) Do you recommend any specific brands to go with for the roller? Thanks for the informative videos and your feedback.
This is satisfying.
Awesome Martha! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!😎 -Paul
What an easy to follow Tutorial, Awesome Job! Thanks for Sharing !
Cool! Wearing brand new Adidas while mudding!! Gotta try that!
Can I do this over painted walls?
Yes.👍🏻
This is perfect 👍👍👍👍👍 good job 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Can you do the paint roller trick on skimming a smooth ceiling with flaws?
Hello. Do you have to sand the walls after skim coating????
looking forward to part II for beginners....I am definitely that!....lol
are we still up for part 2?
This is really cool, I’m starting to learn construction this year as a freshman and this seemed cool even though I’m not sure if I’ll learn it
I've had a problem with a couple skim jobs I've done where I get lines in my mud while skimming.
Great video this was very helpful when I was redoing my house.
Do you sand the wall before you apply the compound?
Hi, can I apply skim coat to a wall with an old paint on it?
Absolutely. Just make sure to scrape off any loose paint etc. You also might want to look into an adhesive-type paint that allows for the compound to stick on the wall easier to prevent cracks in the future.
Damian Masztalerz alright, thanks
Bravo, I’ll be doing this. Can you die the plaster (not sure what it’s called) to save time on the painting too?
Can you put on the description down the different materials you used. Thanks!
Very informative!! Thank you from Texas!!
Right on Jennifer!💥 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Hi Paul, question: would you be able to this same technique for a knock down ceiling?
I'm so happy I found your video! You do s great job explaining.
Hi there Ashleigh! Yes, but it’s a little more difficult working overhead.👍🏻 I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
hey is there any particular prepwork required for skimming a painted wall? should the existing paint be scuffed/sanded for proper adhesion, or is it ok to skim compound right over existing paint
I wish I looked this up before trying to skim coat my small bathroom a couple months ago.
Now you know. Thank you for watching and commenting my friend!👍🏻😎
Perfect timing paul. Tomorrow i skim coat two bathrooms to cover a badly done attempt at skip troweling by a former homeowner. Thanks!
That’s great cruisin thru!👍🏻 Let me know how it goes and if you run into any questions along the way. Happy skim coating! Take care, -Paul
Hiii very nice i wish u will get 1M in 1 month
It helps us beginners if you put a glob of mixed compound on your trowel and show how it holds when you have the trowel sideways, thanx.
I cant believe i became good at skimcoating in just a week
Nice video, Why dont you try +3 light weight that's all I use when roller coating/skimming and a synthetic roller sleeve 3/4 -1 inch just holds more mud. Sometimes I will put some dish soap in the mud helps keep the bubbles down especially if I am going over duro bond ..keep posting love this stuff
Yes it does makes the mud pull tight and smooth less bubbles after mixing
Right on TainT!👍🏻 I appreciate you sharing your experiences using different products and techniques.😎 I need to try the +3 for sure. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend! -Paul
I'll be honest. I live in an apartment, but you make this so interesting Paul I have to watch!
Hi Andrew, That’s awesome man!🙏 Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Take care, -Paul
-Paul
Nice intro beautiful paint
What do I do with outlets, switches, etc... and none of the demo walls have ceilings, how do I get right to the edge when there’s a ceiling?
Hi Brooke, I usually just take switch and outlet covers off. Then cover the actual switch and outlet with tape to keep the joint compound out. Here’s a video that shows how I handle the corners when skim coating walls: ua-cam.com/video/jeGWbgAUvCM/v-deo.html I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Haha
DIYer here! About to start skim coating over textured walls to get smooth walls in my house. Did you sand at any point in this process? Also, if doing the ceiling can you use the same joint compound that is being used on the walls? When the skim coating is complete, do you have a recommended primer to apply before painting?
Thanks!
I need this. Thank you so much. Took paper off and it caused so much damage that I have to skim the walls. :(
Good for beginners, to keep it even.
Thanks
You can skim coat right over that orange peel texture.👍🏻
would you recommend doing this over retro wood paneling?
You made it look so easy. I, on the other hand, looked like I was on a episode of renovation realities. Hopefully this next coat will be the last one. Problems I had were the knap on the roller flattened out over time. Also, when "smoothing" it out with the 12" knife sometimes I would do fine not leaving streaks, other times I'd get streaks on both sides. I think I read somewhere in the comments you are only supposed to be knocking down the high spots. Does that mean I don't have to go over the entire wall with the knife? Thanks for the help!
Next time use a Magic Trowel
Nice work very clever
Ok, who did the down-vote .... Booooooo!
I bought a house built in 1935 last year and the walls show all that age. I did not know how I was going to tackle them until I came across your videos. Thank you for sharing and I expect I will be a master skimmer by the time I am done.
Paul, what would you suggest I do for fine cracks? Should they all be taped? For a house as old as it is, I was pleasantly surprised that cracking is at a minimum throughout.
jaymanwitt
Tape your cracks, they'll never come back.
wow man this was so helpful thank you
Awesome video! I learned a lot! Does the drywall compound wash out of the roller? If so, is it worth the trouble?
I've seen this a few times before in Asian countries, first time seeing It done across the pond though. Different kind of skimming, great trick for DIY though I suppose
Good video! Good technique, it'll save time. My question is: if you have a wall, previously painted with interior flat paint, should I sand it lightly prior to the skim coating for a better adherence? Thanks!
No need. Just skim coat right over it!👍 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul
Do you have a video showing how to skim coat to match existing lath and plaster walls?
I'm assuming this applies to plaster walls as well? If so I'm golden👍
Yes!👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎-Paul
If I need to skim coat the ceiling and walls to get rid of orange peel texture... which do you recommend I start with first? Ceiling? And do I use the same technique?
Ashley Bristol do the ceiling first. You can do the walls first but it’s annoying when material gets on your finished walls.
Wonderful job
