@@chubbrock659 usually more pressure over time will fix that issue. We have or “had” the same issue with Kokanee here @ Green Peter. It’s why the lake has a generous 21 Kokanee limit. With the little perch i just remove the head, guts and scales. Dredge them in flour and seasoning and then pan fry them. Pick the meat off the bone.
Many times in years past. Growing up in Tum Tum on Lake Spokane Perch was the first fish I ever caught. I went from Perch to Bass, and as an adult I discovered Salmon and Steelhead. Now, in my upper 50s, I've gone back to Perch. For more than the taste. I've been up twice in two consecutive weekends on Curlew for the Perch because of your UA-cam videos. For no flasher or camera, I have done pretty good. Thanks for your entertaining and educational videos. P.S. I've also learned from your Kokanee and Walleye content as well..
I ice fished for Perch a few decades back in Potholes Reservoir just off of what they call Medicare beach. As I recall we just used worm on a jig and caught 2 large stringers full. Had to drag them off the ice, too heavy to carry. But the perch disappeared not long after that. I think too many walleyes eating them up and an 18 inch minimum on keeping walleye. That has changed now to 12 inches and I believe the perch are on the rebound. I used to see huge buckets full of perch being taken on Soda Lake (just below Potholes). They dried up there too, probably for same reason as Potholes. Nice to see they are in abundance in Curlew now. I fished there once years ago and trout was King at that time, some nice big ones. I agree we need more spiny rays (especially Perch and Crappie) in this state. WDF&W need to get their act together and not concentrate so much on trout. People love to catch tasty perch and they will spend a lot of money to do so which really benefits the locals in towns such as Republic.
Hey well there’s a recognizable Curlew name. Engstrom! Went to school with your kids. Happy to see my hometown fishery getting some love. Hoping to find time myself to come up while the ice is still good.
I fished Fish Lake by Leavenworth . It was a year when ice came somewhat later on Banks so to scratch ice fishing itch I went there...cought my limit. Used perch eye and home made jig . it was fun and only 2h drive from were I live...
I went ice fishing for the first time since I was kid last year. Found the deepest part of the lake and was using spikes on a Swedish pimple. I caught the biggest yellow perch of my life. A few of them. I think I’m going tomorrow and I can’t wait!
Wife and I were at Curlew this summer. Caught a few perch, little guys, casting off the bank at Black's resort. Tried for Kokes and no luck. Did get some nice trout, but the smaller ones had cocepods. Beautiful place though and Republic is a quaint little town. As always thanks for the video.
Man I need to get up there!! I haven't fished Curlew since the early 90s. Gotta get me some of those farsighted fish! Seeing how often they completely miss, that's nuts!
Thanks for the video! I’m planning to be there in 2 weeks. Hoping the ice is still good. I appreciate telling us in your videos what works what to use and how to. Thanks again!!
not much of an ice fisherman myself, but seeing healthy populations of such good sized perch has me thinking about a family trip to curlew with the boat or kayaks later this year. They are a great tasty protein source when they can be caught in the sizes and numbers to make the effort worthwhile. Appreciate the good tips on how and where to target them for this lake. Totally agree that I would love to see wdfw diversify its efforts into supporting more than just stocked rainbows in every lake; I like catching trout as much as the next guy, but having a variety of healthy fisheries to choose from during multiple seasons of the year and managing the lakes for multiple species in ways that promote healthy fisheries is a much better goal than just trying to fit as many rainbows as possible into the available water.
I am hopeful that perch emphasis takes off. For one they taste better than stocker trout. They can live and breed in a wide variety of water including lakes that trout would die off. Angry little fish that are easy for kids to catch but still fun for adults. Can be fished easily from shore without any special gear.
Hello Tyler. Fun video to watch. Are the perch as active - catchable in the summer? Do you know what time of the year they hit the spawning beds there? Thanks!!!
Perch are definitely prolific breeders. Not uncommon to get a 5 gallon bucket of them out of Oregon’s central coast lakes around Florence. The size isn’t there because of the over population but they’re fun to catch. I always loved their orange fins and stripes.
I agree with you I live in Republic and when I catch a bucket full I think that I am helping the fishery by taking as many as we can so the fish do not stunt for lack of food or overpopulation. But when I get home I know that I am in for a project filleting them (earbuds in music on beer in hand). I power through and have become pretty good at getting the most out of them with no waste. I have even fried the eggs and talked my family into that is the best part I guess that we as Americans we are not as hungry as most other countries?. They are good but not my favorite more of a Walleye guy. P.S. I always think about what I read in a Patrick Mcmanus book that when you are Perch fishing the fish seem to reproduce in the bucket on the way home
We fish Curlew late spring each year for Kokanee. We have to wade through 3-5 trout for each Koke. We also have started fishing for perch which is a blast and great on the table. If the WDFW does go away from trout and make an emphasis on managing the fishery for perch, what do you think that will do to or for the Kokanee?
They started cutting back on Kokanee in that lake a few years ago. They planted 0 this past year. Don't ask me why. This agency has its head so far up its ass I can't discern why they do what they do.
Perch and rainbow pattern cranks around weed bed edges; my favorite perch pattern baits are the super shad rap, the 6” grandma and the Bucher shallow raider. The Savage gear thru-line trout for the tops of weed beds. Have a spinnerbait ready for shoreline wood and DO NOT forget the leader and hook removal tools.
The edges will already have rotten ice. The ice takes a long time to melt but it's been crazy warm this week so if it were me out there I'd feel much better after a couple nights in the mid 20's to firm things back up again. Be safe out there.
Have you ever been ice fishing for Yellow Perch?
yes but they dont grow very big on our lakes so it's not really worth the effort. most perch in utah are between 6-8" max. bite sized!

great lakes and smaller lakes in that region.

You were right out in front of my house. By the way, the boat launch here is FREE. I realize that is of no consequence for ice fishing.

We need you on the WDFW board! You are so smart and understand the economics of everything.

Yellow perch, so many days catching perch as a youngster, days fishing Lake Champlain, 😢Pontusic Lake and now in the Great Northwest. So much fun.

Ice didn't look great today. Sherman pass was 38° when I went over at 10am.
Sucks that Tiffany’s is no longer open during the winter for cabin stays. Looking forward on going this winter and no limits on fish lake 👍🏾
Thank you for the instruction very helpful.

I have only fished Curlew for the Tiger Musky.
Very cool video Tyler
Wish there were better perch fisheries on the west side of the state! Looks like a lot of fun, just so far away!

Anyone notice the tagged fish at 10:40 ?
My parents own and manage Tiffany’s resort and they have open cabins up in the winter time ice fisherman.
Really great under-fished population of perch from John Day to Umatilla on the Columbia River
My kids kove this fishery, nonstop action, i hate cleaning after them 😂😂😂
I agree wyoming does the same thing. Its all about the trout. It gets old.
Hello Tyler.
Fun video to watch. Are the perch as active - catchable in the summer? Do you know what time of the year they hit the spawning beds there? Thanks!!!
Yes they typically spawn March-May here but the bite is excellent from June to August.

Yes you need harvest and/or predation to keep the fishery productive otherwise they readily stunt.
Can you send me a link on the spring bobbers you use

I am super grateful for electric fillet knives for sure.

How’s the ice closer to home?
Not great. Mid-40's and raining all day today. Same forecast tomorrow.
@@spiltmilt thank you for the update. I was going to head over Thursday to do some ice fishing in your area but I’ll have to hold off
As a kid I would fillet a perch and use the meat. Killer bait
Are there certain species you will bleed out or gut at the lake vs just taking them home whole? Why not bleed out the perch?
Salmonids and bigger walleye need bled. Perch not so much
Any recommendations for Tiger Muskie?
Seen many. Never caught one.

Looks like rain in the forecast rest of this week. How long do you think the ice will hold up given there's roughly 6" now?
I think it will hold. Next week looks like it will firm it back up.

Fresh reports from today were 7.5-8" solid. It will hold.
Where can I download this game 😂
Can you show filet procedure
Will put one together soon.
from mid west. I always called them mini walley. To me taste like them. Mmmm fish fry
They are sister taxa so that makes sense. I agree they virtually indistinguishable in taste
