In this video, I talked about my LIVE GUITAR EFFECT SETUP using my iPad Air 2 with iRig Blueboard, and using Bias Amp and Bias FX apps by Positive Grid on my iPad.
I explained how I assembled them together, my thoughts about the setup, and some sample sound in different situations: clean, overdrive, distortion, lead, both live and in recording.

“I am not a professional.” *Proceeds to melt faces off*
Thank you Luis for the kind comment! Cheers :)
The most cool thing was when he talked about his music and then proceed to appear doubled with a weird super snob guitar playing some SymphonyX kind of shit xD Like WHO THE FUCK IS THIS GUY? xD
Yeah no shit, right?
Then shows his thousands of dollar rig
yeah that was a gut busting solo.
“I’m not a pro musician...” and then He blew me away !!! Fuck he plays like a monster .....
Thank you Dany :)
Very tidy indeed!
Made the move 2 years ago and it changed my life. Waited a year then sold almost all of my older things…. I walk into set up, rehearsals, and shows with 1 backpack and an orange 35RT. Oh, I did eventually spring for the Behringer FCB1010 because I just naturally like the feel of a stomp box. Whole rig = $350 (already had the amp) and honestly sounded better than anything I’ve ever spent hrs dialing in.
Dude you're an AWESOME player. Thank you for this.
Hi Mike, thank you so much for the kind comment, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Great information. Great simple rig. Amazing playing. And your video editing is amazing. I love the B-roll that you include. Thank you for playing into a mix. So many of these videos just have somebody shredding, but hearing in a mix is really what matters.
Thank you so much for the kind comment! :)
Great video dude, did the leap with a bass rig, everything fits in my backpack :D
Awesome playing and sound, needed a video like this to explain to people how good going digital is...
Hi Nikola thank you for the kind comment. I also sort of do the same thing with my bass rig, not on iPad yet, but on my computer for recording. Once again thank you :)
Great video Gary. Informative, clear and enthusiastic. Excellent playing too
Your playing is very good! Great video man!
The distorted lead tone is great!
Really enjoyed this video and your presentation.
Great sound! I’m about to take the leap
Thank you for the comment Josh, hopefully the iPad rig will work out well for you! :)
Thank you SO much for posting this video! I'm getting back into guitar but have no space for equipment and really don't need all the big stuff anyway. Also really enjoyed how you explained your journey and coming to grips with utilizing different tools to do the same thing.
really innovative Gary - thanks this is exactly what I was looking for.
Great to hear Nate, thank you for the kind comment :)
Great video, Gary W. Very informative and I enjoyed your playing! Some nice chord voicings in your tunes too!
Gary thank you for a simple yet powerful demo of the app. But above all your musicality is superior.
Hi Bhanu, thank you very much for the kind comment, very appreciated :)
So glad I found this video. Buying equipment to make my phone compatible to my guitar. Super excited now.
Hi Caleb, so glad the video could help you. Enjoy the tone hunting :)
You are an amazing and soulful player!!!!
Hi Clark thank you so much for the kind comment, means a lot to me :)
Great video mate
Looks amazing man, i’ll try this out.
Thanks for the comment. Let me know if you have questions about the iPad rig :)
I agree, bias sounds amazing and is easy to navigate, and I like that there’s a community of people who upload their custom pedal board sounds, so if you’re looking to cover a song and need to sound like a certain artist you can easily find it, and it’s easy to practice with at home if you can be using an amp because it’s too loud! I’m gonna invest in an iPad so I’m not using my phone during gigs and probably use bias for awhile
cool! thx! great, clear video! great playing too!
This is my first visit to your channel and I subscribed. Great job!
Good video. You're right about the amp snobs. They're everywhere in metal!
Thank you for the comment. Yes, people are focusing way too much on choosing the gear, but sometimes with just a simple setup we can achieve so much with more than good enough tone. Cheers :)
I enjoyed your video, nice job. Thanks
Hi Ed, thank you for the kind comment :)
I love it, will switch soon! God bless brod, shout out from LA!
Thank you so much for the kind comment. God bless you too brother, warmest wishes from Yogyakarta :)
Thanks man, excellent video, cool vibes !
Thank you for the kind comment Thierry, glad you enjoyed the video :)
An excellent information video, and great playing - thanks!
Hi Brendan, thank you so much for the kind comment. Cheers :)
You play amazing, man! Thank you for the video!
Thank you for the kind words, glad I could help!😊
Terima kasih tipsnya. Great vids! Should try it ofc.
Sama2 kak semoga membantu!
Thanks for this great video!
You told me all I want to know!
Greetings from Germany 🤘
You are very welcome, thank you for the kind comment :)
Impressive! I thought I was going in the wrong path ha thank you so much for this!
So glad that I stumbled upon this video! You have answered so many questions I had about a rig like this ... I love not having to sacrifice the sound and sonic quality in my rig but mostly I love the versatility and the compact nature a rig like this has ... not to mention my bank account thanx you lol ... Thank you for this video and you’re a great player too ... I’m subscribed now for sure!
Hi Robert, thank you for the kind comment, glad that my video could help :) Be sure to check out the assembly video that I just posted a few weeks ago on my channel if you need some guide on how to set the whole iPad rig together. Once again thank you :)
Keren bro Gary, kebetulan pengen yg simple setupnya
Cool video! Thanks for putting this together
You're very welcome!
sounds amazing
Thank you for the kind comment!
Good man !!! Great guitar player
Thank you Bob for the kind comment :)
I like this idea im going to used it. Thanks God bless
Same thoughts as expressed in the earlier comment - just a warm breeze watching your video!
Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Great idea building the rig for it all! At the end of the day, most people attending a show are just regular Joes looking for a good time and don't care what gear is used. Most don't have a clue what the brands even are. If it sounds good who cares what the musician uses? I don't. Use whatever you enjoy and have fun. Great video!
Hi Patrick, thank you for the kind comment! I agree, in the end it doesn't matter, whatever works best for our needs as long as it's reliable and produces great sound. Cheers :)
Cool. I'm sold
Hi Enrique, thank you for your comment :)
nice video bro. thanks!!!
Hi Yasin, thank you for the kind comment! :)
Tastefully played brother 👍🏻
Thank you Jay for the kind comment :)
I am an old school retired-weekend guitarist and interesting to see how the technology impact to the guitar sound. Yours seems my perfect entrance into millennial's ground. Subscribed.
HI Fadlil, thank you for the comment and the sub! I definitely think that this solution of using iPad and software simulation is definitely going to be the future. I've been using this setup for 2 years without any problem now, and I am looking forward to keep using this setup for as long as I can. Cheers!
Great video
I've been thinking of buying an iPad for a while. You have convinced me. Subscribed 😃
Thank you Durham for the comment! Enjoy your new iPad guitar rig :)
Thank you for clear review
Hi Alican, you are very welcome, thank you for the comment too :)
Soon as you started playing I liked.
Thank you Luke for the kind comment :)
Awesome video Gary! And sick guitar work! I shifted over to modeling as well some years ago - funny how that prized analog gear is now collecting dust. I agree with all those points and would add it's great for
- having a consistent studio-quality mix locked down with your band
-being ready to record with no hassle
-not being annoying to your neighbors (it's amazing how much more I've gravitated towards guitar when I can get a really intense tone while bothering no one!!!)
Hello All in Music. Thank you so much for the kind comment! I agree with all you said, now I also use my analog gear less and less. Thanks for adding some benefit points that I missed out as well. Cheers mate :)

Nice playing 🎶👍
Thank you for the comment Judy :)
Thank you so much for the information. This is EXACTLY what I needed to know. Especially down to playing praise and worship in a church band! Thank you so much. I feel the same way with a traditionalist mentality however, the versatility that an IOS affords is AMAZING! Our smartphones do more than the computers that launched the first moon landing!
Hi Stan, thank you so much for your kind comment, I'm very glad that my video is useful for you :) Yes I agree, now that we have small computers that can fit inside our pocket and be ultra portable with this much power, sometimes it's really great to be able to stop for a moment and appreciate how comfortable we all are living in this day and age where I can put a working guitar rig inside my entertainment tablet. Cheers :)
Yes, I like these type of setups but the looks you get when you pull out one on a jam feels weird lol. I guess the only thing one can do in such a case is convince them with your playing and have the courage to break boundaries, then more will follow.
I use an midi controller, with an old Alesis I/O Dock. I have as many patches as needed. I don’t use Bluetooth, although I have a BT switcher, for my spark amp. I like the iPad setup, more than the spark amp. After a while, everything sounds the same through the Spark amp. It’s a nice unit but not much in the way of tone shaping. I have used the iPad rig, since, it was available on iPad and it still delivers, to this day. I have upgraded , the iPad since but I am still very happy with this quick rig.
I really can’t say anything negative about it.
Thanks Gary
You are very welcome :)
Awesome video I have been really thinking about going this route, just subscribed! Thanks
Thank you Jeepjones :) I'm glad that this video could help you. Let me know if you have questions with the iPad rig :)

By the way ,that’s a very creative setup. I’ve been using iOS iPad rigs for few years now. I use a Alesis iO Dock ll. It’s floor friendly.

Looking forward for videos of Patch making tutorials on Bias FX
hehe you sound amazing crazy guitar playing!! respect
Thank you for the kind comment :)
I've been re-exploring Bias Amp 2/Bias FX on a 7 year old iPad 2 with an old Apogee Jam interface I had. I've always played with modeling from the original Pod to NI Guitar Rig, Amplitube, Revalver, etc. A long time ago I bought Jamup Pro, then Agile Ampkit+, Then Bias Amp and finally Bias FX. I upgraded them all with all the expansions except the bass stuff. Then I got three real amps. A Peavey Valveking II Tube amp, an AMT Stonehead SH-50-4, and a Mahaffay HiLo Watt Plexi. All of them were the head units. I also bought a Marshall 2/12 vertical slant cab and a slew of pedals. RC Boost, Fulltone OCD, AMT Reverberry, AMT Japanese Girl Wah, MXR 10 band EQ, Electro Harmonix Mistress chorus and flanger, Electro Harmonix dual delay, Minifooger bucket brigade delay, bought a couple extra preamps too from AMT. AMT SS-20, AMT Legend Series D2. The hardware sounds amazing. The Stonehead amp and SS-20, and D2 preamps are great sounding. The boutique Mahaffay Plexi is like a hot rodded Marshall Plexi. All great. Then one day I decided to check out Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX again on that old iPad 2. With some careful tweaking of settings and FX, I can easily rival the sounds I get out of the real hardware. Honestly - the feel and dynamics playing the Bias Amp models is no different than my real tube amps/preamps. I also get better sound out of plugging into my H&K 360 watt PA than the Marshall cab.
One thing for sure - having great sound and very dynamic reactive equipment, just makes playing easier and way more inspiring. Whether you go to real gear or software, you will be more creative and enjoy practicing more. I get more versatility out of the iPad 2 rig with a few selected Fender, Mesa Boogie (Mark IIc is my favorite), Marshall, Deisel, Laney, Peavey amps and a wide variety of FX than I can get out of the real hardware and doing A/B comparisons I can't really pick one over the other. Both methods sound and feel great playing. I think building a dedicated floor rig using an iPad is a smart idea.Great video!
Hi Previous User Name, thank you for your comment! Wow, really great to hear about your physical amp and pedal collection, and how you are also exploring tone possibilities in the digital world. The Mark IIc in the Bias Amp/FX is just killer sounding overall, good to hear that you like it too! Cheers :)
Thanks Gary! This was a very fun video to watch. I just purchased Bias FX2 and like what I hear so far. I also recently discovered the sonic power of impulse responses, which Bias FX2 allows you to import. The IRs are the biggest improvement I've heard in all my modelling gear. Things finally sound real!
Hi David, thank you for the kind comment. I am also intrigued with the IR import ability on Bias FX, I think that will allow further customization to create a more realistic tone. Best wishes :)
Bro, God bless you and thanks for sharing your knowledge. Your tones are killer! I just downloaded and purchased the BIAS FX and I’m going to use almost the same gadgets than you. For now I’ll be using an iPhone and I hope can buy the blueboard and an iRig2 next month
You are very welcome, I am glad that my video can help you, and thank you for the kind comment! Enjoy the iPhone Bias rig! Best wishes :)
awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
I’ve been using Bias2 for quite a while. I just picked up a new audio interface and midi pedal. I can control a software looper and bias from one pedal. It’s pretty cool.
Bias FX 2 is really cool! I am still using it, and I'm now currently experimenting with custom IR to enhance the tone.
Brother you are very humble
Though you are a very fine guitarist.
This is the best bais explanation I have seen over the net best It answers all the question about the bias fx and it's usability.
Just yesterday I ordered an audio interface
My real concern was latency .
I was thinking to go the traditional way like buying tube amp and pedals .
And settled on bias fx to give it a try because
An audio interface came within the price of one flashback 2 delay pedal
Baizil Isaac, thank you so much for the kind comment! Good to hear that you tried this rig! Best wishes :)
Would love to try out your patches from the tonecloud. Great video
Dope!
Thank you for the comment :)
It is very good solution man. Please, make a video talking regarding Bias FX 2. Take care.
Hi Andre thank you for the comment. I am currently experimenting with it, stay tuned for a video about it.
This is what I've been discovering myself. I haven't played live with my band with my iPhone setup (Bias Amp + Bias FX) but this video inspired me to do so soon. FYI, the Celestion Speaker Pack Upgrades in Bias Amp are so worth the purchase.
Hi Marlon, thank you for the comment :) Good to know about the Celestion Speaker Pack in the new Bias Amp upgrade, I will check them out, thank you :)
Hi Marlon, I tried the older (analog 3.5mm plug into headphone jack) IRig interface but lots of noise/hiss.. wondering if the Digital version Irig2 HD eliminates the noise ...also, do you need to buy each app for each platform iphone/ipad/computer or can you share all purchases with each (not pay 2x)?
@@carpediem4413 Hi, I don't know why you're getting noise issues. The iRig HD 2 is so much better though. And no, you only need to buy bias once for iphone/ipad but it's a separate purchase for computer.
Thanks Gary, your absolutely right! Guitar snobbery is the problem. I cannot believe how good the sound is from my I-pad (similar to your setup). It’s absolutely the future. I have a whole room of equipment from years of playing guitar and drums and recording. Now I do everything through my I-pad, using a Midi keyboard, guitar interface, midi drum module etc. Garage Band in itself would of cost thousands years ago for what’s built into it. When you factor in that most people have an Android or Apple phone/tablet already, then the cost is minimal compared to buying any musical equipment. Plus, when you finish the gig you can check your email and go online with your tablet 😂😁
Hi gariG2, thank you so much for your comment and your insight about our digital gear for making/playing music. I agree that nowadays most people already have the tool that we need to create and play music with such good quality. Once again thank you, and happy playing :)
Is an audio option interface required? Or will that only help with more crisp sounds?
@@CalebWrightfunkofilming Hi Caleb so sorry for the late reply. You do need an audio interface to connect the guitar to the iPad and to output the sound into a speaker/mixer/etc. Getting a better interface will help to get a cleaner and louder input from your guitar. Hope this helps :)
Pinoy kicks ass! As for me personally, I never use digital modeling amps on stage (and I have tried many times mind you) only because I can never really get that feel and immediacy that only a good tube amp can deliver, and I never use analog tube amps in the studio (again I've tried) only because it is so difficult to isolate, mic, and dial in a real speaker cab. But I will totally agree about the convenience, man lugging around my heavy af Fender '65 Black Face twin reverb combo amp and 15lb. Pedal board to gigs is a real pain in the ass!
Woooooww. Excellent video man. I am completely sold. Looking forward to how you set it up with speakers/amp?? I’m still confused on how it all connects
Hello Omar, I assume you already watched the setup tutorial video. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other question. Cheers :)

Hi Ricardo, glad to know the iPad rig works well :)
Do you plug you rig directly in the PA?
Mathias Pontes Bussinger yeah It works great 👍

lol please pardon my javanese 😅
u have to add the costs of the bias fx and bias amp which are for the ideal version the elite version are about 150 usd each. but besides that I like it so much u did a great job and it sounds amazing
You’re very modest. That’s som impressive guitar playing! Great video.
Hi Brett thank you for the kind comment, I am very glad that you enjoyed the video :)
oooh I like that very much man... when I hear you that you're playing in your church.. that's a good idea
Thanks for the information about bias fx, I use this but not use midi comander or bluetoth pedal board, i use android mobile phone to change preset or amp ( use apk touchosc )
Positive Grid products sound beautifully
realistic ! It’s roughly the equivalent of the Hotone Ampero which also diserves to be known. But I tried the iRig Blueboard to switch my Bias Fx presets and I can tell the Blueboard is NOT fast enough to switch presets in live conditions, it would be ok to use it on your desk or for changing pages.. but thats’ all.
Hey Paul, I did use the Blueboard and Bias FX for live conditions, and yes there are delays when changing patches. But I am now experimenting with individual effects control inside a single patch using Blueboard instead of changing the whole patches, and it's better in terms of response time and latency. Hope this helps :)
try the app Prime by loop community, youll love it!
mas nya bahasa Inggris nya bagus :)

Siappp kak, terima kasih, semoga berhasil kak :)
Muy bueno el vídeo

If you’re daring use the IAA function and use Roxin or MIDI Guitar 2 for strings or Hammond B3 sounds. Roxin is by Yonac & MIDI Guitar 2 is by Jam Origin. No midi cables & is polyphonic.
Hi Michael, good to know, full MIDI guitar could be something that is useful for some specific musical applications.
Correction,Roxsyn .
The upgrade to Bias Amp 2 is worth it if you get the celestion ir’s. They increase the realism 100%.
Hi Aaron, thanks for the info, I haven't dig in deep into the cabs IR yet, but I will definitely check it out on my Bias Amp 2. Thanks :)
Trying to learn how expensive it can get to get Bias amp or Bias amp 2 (is it a new different product or just an upgrade)? and also, how about FX? Can you just buy once or do you have to buy each effect? what about new releases? Thanks for any help you can give
@@carpediem4413 you get 2 or 3 pedals free in bias FX and 2 free amps in bias amp , if you wanna access the other ones you can buy those or you can rent them
I have a 2014 iPod Touch running the Bias FX app. That’s it. I’m surprised how good it sounds through a sound system.
Hi /-\lien 8string, our phone/tablet is now good enough for making/playing music with good quality sound. Thanks for the comment :)

Thank youuu otniel
I suggest focusrite itrack instead of irig duo. Very cool
Thank you for the suggestion, looks interesting!
I didn't really like the tones you got, but I never really liked bias fx as a whole. Perfectly usable for live gigs, but I feel like that would fall flat on a professional recording.
This would be soooooo cool if you could use any PC AU plugin, stuff like the neural dsp or mercuriall amp sims. The format factory is pretty much perfect already, and the iPad has more than enough power to run such plugins, as they already run in fairly low powered laptops, it's literally just a compatibility issue. With this little tweak I feel like entire bands could tour with just one or two iPads and get exactly their album tones, 0 compromises.
I gotta agree with you on the conclusion, this _is_ the future. It might not be the present for high end professional usage, but in a few years oh boy oh boy.
Yes, my main application for using Bias FX on the iPad is just for playing live. I agree there are better amp sims and FX solution out there, particularly in VST format. Hopefully in the coming years we'll see more development in software based guitar tone solution. Cheers :)
@@Gary_W In MAX 10 years real gear will join vinyl records in museum. I remember having an argument with a local photographer about 20 years ago: He was adamant that digital cameras will never surpass film.....
I also have Bias and it's just crazy how good it works on iPad. Sound interface is Riff.
Awesome tones man, are the sounds you used in this video available on the tonecloud?
Thank you for the comment, DEA. I haven't uploaded the patches to the Tonecloud yet, but I will in the near future :)
love this video, very insightful. just a quick question, what if the software crash in the middle of the show, what would be your backup?
Thank you for the comment! I never thought about bringing a backup before, it's been through many shows with no problem so far, but I tend to keep very little thing inside my iPad anyway so hopefully less chance of things going wrong. I will probably assemble a very small pedalboard in the future as a backup.
