Thematisch richtet sich das Lied gegen Expansionsbestrebungen des Nachbarlandes Frankreich und ruft die Deutschen dazu auf, die Grenze zu sichern. Es entstand als Reaktion auf die Aggression der französischen Regierung unter Adolphe Thiers im Jahr 1840, der den Rhein als Frankreichs Ostgrenze gefordert hatte.
1. Es braust ein Ruf wie Donnerhall,
Wie Schwertgeklirr und Wogenprall:
Zum Rhein, zum Rhein, zum deutschen Rhein,
Wer will des Stromes Hüter sein?

2. Durch hunderttausend zuckt es schnell,
Und aller Augen blitzen hell;

3. Er blickt hinauf in Himmels Au'n,

There's just something in the German's spirit that loves marches, military songs, and a sense of unity and pride. As long as we respect everone else, there's nothing wrong with that. Lang Lebe Deutschland, mein echt liebe!

I have loved this song since I was a little kid, because it is a tune on an old music box that my grampa brought over back in the 1890s,, way before any nazu association. It is just a wonderful German march. Too bad that the monster also loved it, but I still love this marching song.

Schneckenburger was 21 when he wrote the lyrics. It was in 1840, when the then French prime minister Thieri all of the sudden started talking about Rhein as about the French border, although both banks of the river were settled predominantly by German people. The current famous melody was composed by Karl Wilhelm in 1854. It's difficult to listen to the song without prejudice today, especially if you are e.g. a Czech. Anyway, I'd also say it's a very strong, patriotic and positive work of art.

Oh shut up, do you really expect Mexico to agree to build a wall? You'd have to invade them to make them pay for it, which would get America kicked out of NATO, and put into economic decline by sanctions, and maybe even start a nuclear war. The american economy can also not pay for this wall, and it'll send the US into an economic crisis. Even if the wall IS built, the mexicans can just, you know, use a ladder, and if you want to say, oh, we'll put a garrison across the wall, that'll tank the american economy even more, and ultimately be useless.

der Rest ist nur etwas Gesäusel das ich nicht verstehe.
@Ottl30001 nein, aber das Lied bezieht sich ja auf die Pflicht jedes deutschen den Rhein als deutschen Fluss zu erhalten und diese Pflicht bestand halt auch 1940 als es um das Schicksal dieses Flusses ging.

I was born and grew up in Schleswig, which was long time a danish domain, so I know what you are talking about. I wasn`t talking about the eastern part cause this song is about the "Wacht am Rhein", which is about the conscious about the Rhine, not about the Rhine as a boarder river, it is about the Rhine as a german river. And about french agression against the south german states over centurys. Remember this song was written in the 19th century, long before germany was united.

Indeat "Die Wacht am Rhein" refers not to the 70/71 war, but in the historical context and the conflicts between france and germany which results in the mentioned war.
